Geomechanical effects of CO_2 storage in depleted gas reservoirs in the Netherlands:Inferences from feasibility studies and comparison with aquifer storage

In this paper,the geomechanical impact of large-scale carbon dioxide(CO) storage in depleted Dutch gas fields is compared with the impact of COstorage in saline *** geomechanical behaviour of four potential COstorage sites is examined using flow and geomechanical *** gas reservoirs in the Netherlands are found in fault blocks,one to a few kilometres wide,laterally bounded by sealing *** depletion or re-pressurization in the lateral direction is seldom an issue because of a lack of active *** pressure changes are therefore limited to a gas-bearing fault block,while the induced stress changes affect the gas reservoir and extend 1-3 km away into the surrounding *** in favour of COstorage in depleted gas fields are:proven seal quality,availability of field data,no record of seal integrity failure by fault reactivation from the seismically active producing Dutch gas fields,and the potential benefits of restoring the virgin formation pressure and stress state to geomechanical *** the other hand,COinjection in saline aquifers causes pressure build-up that exceeds the virgin hydrostatic *** perturbations resulting from pressure build-up affect large areas,extending tens of kilometres away from the injection *** stresses in top seals ***,small and do not exceed a few tenths of megapascal for a pressure build-up of a few megapascals in the storage *** effects on top seals are weak,but could be enhanced close to the injection zone by the thermal effects of *** related to characterisation of large areas affected by pressure build-up are significant,and seal quality and continuity are more difficult to be demonstrated for aquifers than for depleted gas reservoirs that have held hydrocarbons for millions of years.

Nanocrystals of single-phase samarium monoaluminate (SmAlO3) were synthesized and studied for the first time. Malic acid was employed as a new complexing agent in the sol-gel process. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), specific surface area and density. Bingham Flows in Periodic Domains of Infinite Length

The Bingham fluid model has been successfully used in modeling a large class of non-Newtonian fluids. In this paper, the authors extend to the case of Bingham fluids the results previously obtained by Chipot and Mardare, who studied the asymptotics of the Stokes flow in a cylindrical domain that becomes unbounded in one direction, and prove the convergence of the solution to the Bingham problem in a finite periodic domain, to the solution of the Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain, as the length of the finite domain goes to infinity. As a consequence of this convergence, the existence of a solution to a Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain is obtained, and the uniqueness of the velocity field for this problem is also shown. Finally, they show that the error in approximating the velocity field in the infinite domain with the velocity in a periodic domain of length 2l has a polynomial decay in , unlike in the Stokes case （see [Chipot, M. and Mardare, S., Asymptotic behaviour of the Stokes problem in cylinders becoming unbounded in one direction, Journal de Mathgmatiques Pures et Appliqudes, 90（2）, 2008, 133-159]） where it has an exponential decay. This is in itself an important result for the numerical simulations of non-Newtonian flows in long tubes.

Energy balance model to assess the resistance of ballistic protection materials

NATO standards"AEP-2920 Procedures for the Evaluation and Classification of Personal Armor"and NIJ Standard-0101.06,indicate the method to statistically assess the resistance of personal ballistic protection *** be validated and accepted through these procedures,a personal ballistic protection material should withstand an impact of a specific projectile with a probability of a partial penetration confidence level higher than 90%.The present study introduces an energy equilibrium method to assess the confidence level for the probability of partial penetration of ductile and brittle *** experiments performed in the Ballistics laboratory of the Royal Military Academy in Belgium,use a modified pendulum method that allowed the quantification of the energy balance before and after the ballistic *** results were then compared with the ones obtained using the method specified by the NATO standard and NIJ 0101.06,mentioned *** outcome of this comparison shows the tendency of the values obtained by the pendulum method to faithfully follow the values obtained according to NATO and NIJ *** presented method is not based on statistical estimations,but instead,an exact method,of computing the energy absorbed by the tested *** is an advantage for the cases when the material to be evaluated is expensive or it is in the development phase and mass production is not possible.

The concept of‘cirrhosis’is evolving and it is now clear that compensated and decompensated cirrhosis are completely different in terms of ***,the term‘advanced chronic liver disease(ACLD)’better reflects the continuum of histological changes occurring in the liver,which continue to progress even after cirrhosis has developed,and might regress after removing the etiological factor causing the liver *** compensated ACLD,portal hypertension marks the progression to a stage with higher risk of clinical complication and requires an appropriate evaluation and *** tests to diagnose cirrhosis(liver biopsy)and portal hypertension(hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement and endoscopy)remain of crucial importance in several difficult clinical scenarios,but their need can be reduced by using different non-invasive tests in standard *** non-invasive tests,the accepted use,major limitations and major benefits of serum markers of fibrosis,elastography and imaging methods are summarized in the present review.

Forward Scattering Series and Pade Approximants for Acoustic Wavefield Propagation in a Vertically Varying Medium

We present the application of the theory of Pade approximants to extending the perturbative solutions of acoustic wave equation for a three dimensional vertically varying medium with one *** type of solutions have limited convergence properties depending on either the degree of contrast between the actual and the reference medium or the angle of incidence of a plane wave *** show that the sequence of Pade approximants to the partial sums in the forward scattering series for the 3D wave equation is convergent for any contrast and any incidence *** allows the construction of any reflected waves including phase-shifted post-critical plane waves and,for a point-source problem,refracted events or headwaves,and it also provides interesting interpretations of these solutions in the scattering theory formalism.

Improvement of PCR reaction conditions for site-directed mutagenesis of big plasmids

QuickChange mutagenesis is the method of choice for site-directed mutagenesis （SDM） of target sequences in a plasmid. It can be applied successfully to small plasmids （up to 10 kb）. However, this method cannot efficiently mutate bigger plasmids. Using KOD Hot Start polymerase in combination with high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） purified primers, we were able to achieve SDM in big plasmids （up to 16 kb） involving not only a single base change but also multiple base changes. Moreover, only six polymerase chain reaction （PCR） cycles and 0.5μI of polymerase （instead of 18 PCR cycles and 1.0 μI of enzyme in the standard protocol） were sufficient for the reaction.

Geographic information system (GIS) application for windthrow mapping and management in Iezer Mountains, Southern Carpathians

Windthrow problem is a difficult task for the forest managers in the Romanian Carpathians and especially in Iezer Mountains. The last windthrow, in July 2005, affected about 370 ha within the study area and left unprotected large slopes with important declivities （20-30°）. In our study, we try to propose a tool for forest management, in order to control and minimize the negative effect of wind upon the mountain forest ecosystem. The digital data input derived from forestry data （forest stand typology, age, canopy coverage index, forest productivity class） and from the forest biotope features （soil and topography parameters）. The main goal was to find a more objective way for digital layer reclassification in order to obtain the windthrow areas susceptibility map for the Iezer Mountains. Each digital layer has its own weight within the analysis and one of them was difficult to be modeled （the wind features）. A statistical approach was developed on the basis of local phenomena and the wind- throw features in the Romanian Carpathians. This allowed us to obtain the reclassification conditions for each digital layer. Forest canopy typology and soil features （mainly its volume） were considered as the key factors for the windthrow occurrence analysis. The final windthrow susceptibility map was validated with the help of the statistic occurrence of windthrow areas within each susceptibility class and after a field check of the sites. The result was encouraging, because 92.5% of the windthrow areas fall into the highest windthrow susceptibility class.

Worldwide stroke is increasing in parallel with modernization,changes in lifestyle,and the growing elderly *** review is focused on the link between diet,as part of‘modern lifestyle’,and health in the context of genetic predisposition of individuals to‘unhealthy’metabolic pathway *** is concluded that lifestyle including high sugar diets,alcohol and tobacco addiction or high fat diets as well as ageing,brain injury,oxidative stress and neuroinflammation,negatively influence the onset,severity and duration of neurodegenerative ***,there are several healthy dietary components such as polyunsaturated fatty acids and the anti-oxidants curcumin,resveratrol,blueberry polyphenols,sulphoraphane,salvionic acid as well as caloric restriction and physical activity,which may counteract ageing and associated neurodegenerative diseases via increased autophagy or increased neurogenesis in the adult brain.
