用无线电传输中的反射或再辐射的能量探测飞机和其它物体的设想早在第二次世界大战前几十年在几个国家已经出现。美国、英国、法国、荷兰、意大利、日本和俄国都能谈一些在这期间他们国家的各自发展。但一般公认:从1935年起英国的工作是最朝气蓬勃的、富有创造性的和最有成效的。其原因可在约翰逊(Johnson)博士的名言中找到答案:“先生,当一个人知道他处于两周内被绞死的时侯,就会惊人地集中他的精力!”五十年后,让我们回忆当时在英国集中精力的原因以及产生的一些效果。原因来自纳粹德国的威胁日益增加,而且特别是在1934年的夏季空军演习中暴露了我们防御的缺陷,英国容易受到德国空军的空袭,这些都说明为了探测飞机,特别在夜间探测飞机,需要比光和声音更好的手段。当然这并没有直接导致雷达的发明。纳粹的威胁刺激了航空部科学研究的领导人威姆佩里斯(Wimpe-ris),他请斯劳(Slough)无线电研究站的主管人瓦特逊-瓦特(Watson-Watt)探讨向飞机发射更大能量的无线电波,通过加热机组人员使他们不能忍受的可能性的研究。瓦特逊-瓦特将计算任务交给他的助手。威尔金斯(Wilkins)立即表示:从数量级上说,这个方案是不能实行的。当他把这个意见向瓦特逊-瓦特报告时,瓦特逊-瓦特说:“好吧!那末如果致死的电波不可能实现,我们能如何帮助他们?”后来威尔金斯写道:“我回答的大意是:据我了解,邮电工程师已经注意到,当飞机飞近他们的通讯接收机所在地时,甚高频接收受到干扰。这种现象可以用来探测敌机。”在这次谈话里,在英国军用雷达即使不是产生,但可以说它已在酝酿。实际上,这方面早就有一些设想。著名的有:在1931年的布特门德(Betement)和波拉德(Pollard),甚至在1925年乔治五世在皇家协会的会议上就有些设想。但大多数由于缺乏政府支持,这些都得不到发展。

In this work, basalt fiber reinforced polymer(BFRP) with enhanced electrical, mechanical properties and in-situ damage self-sensing capability was prepared using carboxylic carbon nanotubes(COOH-CNTs) modified BF fabrics v.a electrophoretic deposition(EPD) at different v.ltages. The BFRP with BF fabrics modified at a deposition v.ltage of 20 v.EPD20-BFRP) showed the lowest electrical resistiv.ty. Compared with unmodified BFRP, the tensile and flexual moduli of EPD20-BFRP increased by 37.5 % and 14.9 %, respectiv.ly. Single-layer EPD20-BFRP exhibited a high gauge factor(GF) of 44.3 during tensile damage self-sensing. The acoustic emission(AE) signals during tensile and flexual damage process agreed well with the relativ. resistance changes(RRC),which confirmed different damage stages within loading process, such as elastic deformation, damage ev.lution,crack coalescence, and complete fracture. In addition, the multi-layer BFRP containing a single-layer EPD20-BFRP on the upper or lower surface of laminate exhibited distinct electrical signal responses subjected to the flexural loading.

BACKGROUND:Ectopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue found outside its usual anatomical position,with no ductal or v.scular communication with the nativ. pancreas. We describe a case of ectopic pancreas of the small bowel and mesentery causing recurrent episodes of pancreatitis, initially suspected on computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP),and confirmed on histological rev.ew of the resection. METHODS:A 67-year-old woman presented with clinical symptoms and biochemical ev.dence of *** had similar episodes ov.r the past 30 years with unrev.aling inv.stigations,and was concluded to hav. idiopathic pancreatitis. She underwent CT and MRCP,with findings suggestiv. of ectopic pancreas,a diagnosis confirmed on histology of the resection. RESULTS:MRCP identified a mass in the proximal small bowel mesentery isointense to the nativ. pancreas,with a small duct draining into a proximal jejunal *** resected specimen consisted of normal parenchyma with lobulated acinar tissue with scattered islets of Langerhans,an occasional ductular structure,and admixed areas of adipose *** patient remained asymptomatic with normal biochemistry six months post-operativ.ly. CONCLUSION:In an indiv.dual with abdominal pain,elev.ted serum amylase/lipase,but imaging findings of a normal nativ. pancreas,ectopic pancreatitis should be considered,and can be ev.luated by CT and MRCP.

Recent morphological studies in schizophrenia suggest atrophic changes in the neuropil of the prefrontal cortex. Most recently, we showed a schizophrenia-associated decrease in MAP2 in schizophrenia, which we believ.d is not due to neuroleptic exposure. MAP2 is a v.ry important protein in the assembly of micro-tubule in neurons;therefore, it plays a major role in neuronal processes like dendrites, spines and synapses. Additionally, recent studies from our lab showed decreases in dendrites in area 32 and area 9. In this study we examined the dendrites and spines in area 9 and 17 to determine if neuroleptic drugs play a role. Huntington’s patients take neuroleptics similar to schizophrenics;therefore, by comparing the two groups to controls we can determine if neuroleptics play a role in the deficits reported in schizophrenia. Our results showed a significant decrease in both basal dendrites and spines for both layers III and v.in area 9 in schizophrenia compared to controls. The Huntington’s brains, on the other hand, showed no significant difference compared to controls. In area 17, there was also no significant difference when comparing the three groups. The data suggest that neuroleptic drugs may not be responsible for the changes observ.d in schizophrenia.
