Quasi-two-dimensional strong liquid-like dynamics of surface atoms in metallic glasses

The fast dynamic properties of the surface of metallic glasses(MGs) play a critical role in determining their potential applications. However, due to the significant difference in thermal history between atomic simulation models and laboratory-made samples, the atomic-scale behaviors of the fast surface dynamics of MGs in experiments remain uncertain. Herein, we prepared model MG films with notable variations in thermal stability using a recently developed efficient annealing protocol, and investigated their atomic-scale dynamics systematically. We found that the dynamics of surface atoms remain invariant, whereas the difference in dynamical heterogeneity between surface and interior regions increases with the improvement of thermal stability. This can be associated with the more pronounced correlation between atomic activation energy spectra and depth from the surface in samples with higher thermal stability. In addition, dynamic anisotropy appears for surface atoms, and their transverse dynamics are faster than normal components, which can also be interpreted by activation energy spectra. Our results reveal the presence of strong liquid-like atomic dynamics confined to the surface of laboratory-made MGs, illuminating the underlying mechanisms for surface engineering design, such as cold joining by ultrasonic vibrations and superlattice growth.

Effects of physical crust on soil detachment by overland flow in the Loess Plateau region of China

Physical soil crust(PSC),a key component of surface soil structure,exists extensively in loess areas.PSC is considered to have a significant effect on soil detachment processes.However,the long-term effects and the corresponding mechanisms of PSC on soil detachment by overland flow are still not well understood,especially in natural environments.To investigate temporal variation in soil erosion resistance and the underlying factors during PSC formation,an 8×8-m soil plot was exposed to natural conditions in the Loess Plateau over a 524-day period spanning two rainy seasons and a winter between them.A flume test was conducted to determine soil detachment capacity(Dc)under six designed flow shear stress levels(5.66-22.11 Pa)using crusted(SC)and non-crusted(NSC)soil samples at different PSC development stages.Subsequently,two soil erosion resistance parameters,rill erodibility(K_(r))and critical shear stress(τ_(c)),were calculated.Over time,in the SC and NSC treatments,K_(r)decreased from 0.516 to 0.120 s m^(-1)and 0.521 to 0.223 s m^(-1),respectively,whileτ_(c)increased from 0.49 to 4.42 Pa and 0.26-2.46 Pa,respectively.Variation in soil erosion resistance was rapid in the first one to two months,and then slowed down,with slight fluctuations afterwards.In the SC treatment,K_(r)was 42%lower andτ_(c)was 67%greater than those in the NSC treatment.Soil properties changed greatly for both treatments.SCT increased from 0 to 7.09 mm in the SC treatment.Coh increased from 2.91 to 9.04 kPa and 3.01-4.78 kPa in SC and NSC treatments,respectively.Both soil erosion resistance parameters could be well predicted by SCT and Coh in the SC treatment(R^(2)≥0.82),while their best predictor was Coh in the NSC treatment(R^(2)≥0.90).The results demonstrate that PSC formation enhances soil erosion resistance in the soil detachment process in the loess region under natural conditions.Our study revealed the important role and complexity of PSC in the process of soil erosion,and provided theoretical and data support for accurate understandi

The roles of macrophage migration inhibitory factor in retinal diseases

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF),a multifunctional cytokine,is secreted by various cells and participates in inflammatory reactions,including innate and adaptive immunity.There are some evidences that MIF is involved in many vitreoretinal diseases.For example,MIF can exacerbate many types of uveitis;measurements of MIF levels can be used to monitor the effectiveness of uveitis treatment.MIF also alleviates trauma-induced and glaucoma-induced optic nerve damage.Furthermore,MIF is critical for retinal/choroidal neovascularization,especially complex neovascularization.MIF exacerbates retinal degeneration;thus,anti-MIF therapy may help to mitigate retinal degeneration.MIF protects uveal melanoma from attacks by natural killer cells.The mechanism underlying the effects of MIF in these diseases has been demonstrated:it binds to cluster of differentiation 74,inhibits the c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathway,and triggers mitogen-activated protein kinases,extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2,and the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/Akt pathway.MIF also upregulates Toll-like receptor 4 and activates the nuclear factor kappa-B signaling pathway.This review focuses on the structure and function of MIF and its receptors,including the effects of MIF on uveal inflammation,retinal degeneration,optic neuropathy,retinal/choroidal neovascularization,and uveal melanoma.

The cubic stiffness force model(CSFM)and Bouc-Wen model(BWM)are introduced and compared innovatively.The unknown coefficients of the nonlinear models are identified by the genetic algorithm combined with experiments.By fitting the identified nonlinear coefficients under different excitation amplitudes,the nonlinear vibration responses of the system are predicted.The results show that the accuracy of the BWM is higher than that of the CSFM,especially in the non-resonant region.However,the optimization time of the BWM is longer than that of the CSFM.

Online preparation of high-quality BN coatings with atomic diffusion based on carbon-free water-soluble precursor

Efficient and environmentally friendly production of high-quality continuous fiber coatings using current preparation methods is highly challenging due to issues such as scale and batch processing restrictions,low deposition rate,high energy consumption,and utilization of multiple environmentally hazardous steps.To address these challenges,we propose a stable and efficient wet chemical deposition coating method for high-throughput online continuous preparation of boron nitride(BN)coatings on ceramic fibers under an ambient environment.Our process involves surface modification,in-situ wet chemical deposition,and heat treatment,and all seamlessly connecting with the ceramic fiber preparation process through continuous stretching.Hydrophilic groups were introduced via surface modification enhancing wettability of the fiber surface with impregnating solution.An in-situ reaction and atom migration improve uniformity and binding of the coating.As a result,outstanding impregnation and adhesion properties are achieved.A comprehensive analysis to evaluate the impact of the BN coatings was conducted,which demonstrates that the BN-coated fibers exhibit a remarkable 36%increase in tensile strength,a 133%increase in fracture toughness,and enhanced temperature resistance of up to 1600℃.It provides a secure and efficient platform for cost-effective production of functional and high-quality coatings through targeted surface modification and rapid stretching impregnation.

Preparation of lactic acid bacteria compound starter cultures based on pasting properties and its improvement of glutinous rice flour and dough

The effects of 5 lactic acid bacteria(LAB)fermentation on the pasting properties of glutinous rice flour were compared,and suitable fermentation strains were selected based on the changes of viscosity,setback value,and breakdown value to prepare LAB compound starter cultures.The results revealed that Latilactobacillus sakei HSD004 and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus HSD005 had apparent advantages in increasing the viscosity and reducing the setback and breakdown values of glutinous rice flour.In particular,the compound starter created using the two abovementioned LAB in the ratio of 3:1 had better performance than that using a single LAB in improving the pasting properties and increasing the water and oil absorption capacity of glutinous rice flour.Moreover,the gelatinization enthalpy of the fermented samples increased significantly.For frozen glutinous rice dough stored for 28 days,the viscoelasticity of frozen dough prepared by compound starter was better than that of control dough,and the freezable water content was lower than that of control dough.These results indicate that compound LAB fermentation is a promising technology in the glutinous rice-based food processing industry,which has significance for its application.

Introduction:A retrospective study based on sentinel surveillance was conducted in 10 provinciallevel administrative divisions(PLADs)in China to enhance the understanding of the epidemiological characteristics of human parainfluenza viruses(HPIVs).Methods:From January 2019 to June 2023,respiratory specimens were collected from individuals with acute respiratory infections(ARIs)and screened for four HPIVs serotypes and other common respiratory viruses using multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR).This study analyzed the association of HPIVs infections with seasonal patterns,geographical distribution,demographic profiles,clinical features,and co-infection status.Results:During the study period,a total of 12,866 ARIs were included.The overall detection rate of HPIVs was 6.15%,varying from 5.04%in 2022 to 9.70%in 2020.The median age of HPIVs-infected patients was 3 years.HPIV2 was more prevalent among individuals aged 5–17 years(42.57%),while HPIV4 was more common in those over 65 years(12.24%).HPIV3(54.16%)and HPIV1(27.18%)were the predominant serotypes,and their prevalence exhibited significant seasonal fluctuations postcoronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.The peak of HPIV3 shifted three months later in 2020 compared to 2019 and returned to a summer peak thereafter.Two peaks of HPIV1 were observed in 2021 following the peak of HPIV3.Additionally,coinfections were frequent in HPIVs cases(overall rate:22.12%),with human rhinovirus being the most common co-infecting virus.Conclusions:The prevalence of HPIVs in China was predominantly due to HPIV3 and HPIV1,and their seasonal patterns were altered by pandemic restrictions.Hence,continuous surveillance of HPIVs is essential.

Rapid health estimation of in-service battery packs based on limited labels and domain adaptation

For large-scale in-service electric vehicles(EVs)that undergo potential maintenance,second-hand transactions,and retirement,it is crucial to rapidly evaluate the health status of their battery packs.However,existing methods often rely on lengthy battery charging/discharging data or extensive training samples,which hinders their implementation in practical scenarios.To address this issue,a rapid health estimation method based on short-time charging data and limited labels for in-service battery packs is proposed in this paper.First,a digital twin of battery pack is established to emulate its dynamic behavior across various aging levels and inconsistency degrees.Then,increment capacity sequences(△Q)within a short voltage span are extracted from charging process to indicate battery health.Furthermore,data-driven models based on deep convolutional neural network(DCNN)are constructed to estimate battery state of health(SOH),where the synthetic data is employed to pre-train the models,and transfer learning strategies by using fine-tuning and domain adaptation are utilized to enhance the model adaptability.Finally,field data of 10 EVs exhibiting different SOHs are used to verify the proposed methods.By using the△Q with 100 m V voltage change,the SOH of battery packs can be accurately estimated with an error around 3.2%.

Multi-scale persistent spatiotemporal transformer for long-term urban traffic flow prediction

Long-term urban traffic flow prediction is an important task in the field of intelligent transportation,as it can help optimize traffic management and improve travel efficiency.To improve prediction accuracy,a crucial issue is how to model spatiotemporal dependency in urban traffic data.In recent years,many studies have adopted spatiotemporal neural networks to extract key information from traffic data.However,most models ignore the semantic spatial similarity between long-distance areas when mining spatial dependency.They also ignore the impact of predicted time steps on the next unpredicted time step for making long-term predictions.Moreover,these models lack a comprehensive data embedding process to represent complex spatiotemporal dependency.This paper proposes a multi-scale persistent spatiotemporal transformer(MSPSTT)model to perform accurate long-term traffic flow prediction in cities.MSPSTT adopts an encoder-decoder structure and incorporates temporal,periodic,and spatial features to fully embed urban traffic data to address these issues.The model consists of a spatiotemporal encoder and a spatiotemporal decoder,which rely on temporal,geospatial,and semantic space multi-head attention modules to dynamically extract temporal,geospatial,and semantic characteristics.The spatiotemporal decoder combines the context information provided by the encoder,integrates the predicted time step information,and is iteratively updated to learn the correlation between different time steps in the broader time range to improve the model’s accuracy for long-term prediction.Experiments on four public transportation datasets demonstrate that MSPSTT outperforms the existing models by up to 9.5%on three common metrics.

Spent graphite regeneration:Exploring diverse repairing manners with impurities-catalyzing effect towards high performance and low energy consumption

Spent battery recycling has received considerable attention because of its economic and environmental potential.A large amount of retired graphite has been produced as the main electrode material,accompanied by a detailed exploration of the repair mechanism.However,they still suffer from unclear repair mechanisms and physicochemical evolution.In this study,spent graphite was repaired employing three methodologies:pickling-sintering,pyrogenic-recovery,and high-temperature sintering.Owing to the catalytic effect of the metal-based impurities and temperature control,the as-obtained samples displayed an ordered transformation,including the interlayer distance,crystalline degree,and grain size.As anodes of lithium ions batteries,the capacity of repaired samples reached up to 310 mA h g^(-1)above after 300loops at 1.0 C,similar to that of commercial graphite.Meanwhile,benefitting from the effective assembly of carbon atoms in internal structure of graphite at>1400℃,their initial coulombic efficiency were>87%.Even at 2.0 C,the capacity of samples remained approximately 244 mA h g^(-1)after 500 cycles.Detailed electrochemical and kinetic analyses revealed that a low temperature enhanced the isotropy,thereby enhancing the rate properties.Further,economic and environmental analyses revealed that the revenue obtained through suitable pyrogenic-recovering manners was approximately the largest value(5500$t^(-1)).Thus,this study is expected to clarify the in-depth effect of different repair methods on the traits of graphite,while offering all-round evaluations of repaired graphite.
