The current study aims to do a comparative analysis of the results obtained with two End-Member(EM)grain-size modeling techniques(Analy Size and Bas EMMA) and the Environmental Sensitive Grain-Size(ESGS) modeling for sediment samples collected in the mudbelts of the southern Brazilian shelf. The methods were compared using grain-size data from the south Brazilian shelf, and the results are discussed here. It is the first time that the concept of ESGS, in its present form, is utilized outside China. The results show that despite its relative ease of use, the ESGS is not fully comparable to the EM analyses, and only two grain-size ESGS classes were recognized as analogous to EMs. The comparison of the Analy Size and Bas EMMA procedures also revealed significant differences between the techniques. A comparative analysis between the two EM techniques revealed advantages in the Bas EMMA, especially in the better correlation of the end-members with the original grain size distribution. The analysis of the geographical distribution of the EM abundances allowed point sources of sandy populations to be recognized as well as the contribution of the Rio de la Plata as a source of silty sediments to be inferred.

Development and application of a multi-step porcine in vitro system to evaluate feedstuffs and feed additives for their efficacy in nutrient digestion, digesta characteristics, and intestinal immune responses

In vitro model provides alternatives to the use of live animals in research. In pig nutrition, there has been a tremendous increase in in vivo research over the decades. Proper utilization of in vitro models could provide a screening tool to reduce the needs of in vivo studies, research duration, cost, and the use of animals and feeds. This study aimed to develop a multi-step porcine in vitro system to simulate nutrient digestion and intestinal epithelial immune responses affected by feedstuffs and feed additives. Seven feedstuffs(corn, corn distillers dried grains with solubles [corn DDGS], barley, wheat, soybean meal, soy protein concentrates, and Corynebacterium glutamicum cell mass [CGCM]), feed enzymes(xylanase and phytase), and supplemental amino acids(arginine, methionine, and tryptophan), were used in this in vitro evaluation for their efficacy on digestibility, digesta characteristics, and intestinal health compared with the results from previously published in vivo studies. All in vitro evaluations were triplicated. Data were analyzed using mixed procedure of SAS9.4. Evaluations included(1) nutrient digestibility of feedstuffs,(2) the effects of feed enzymes, xylanase and phytase, on digestibility of feedstuffs and specific substrates, and(3) the effects of amino acids, arginine, tryptophan, and methionine, on anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-heat stress statuses showing their effects(P < 0.05) on the measured items. Differences in dry matter and crude protein digestibility among the feedstuffs as well as effects of xylanase and phytase were detected(P < 0.05), including xylo-oligosaccharide profiles and phosphorus release from phytate. Supplementation of arginine, tryptophan, and methionine modulated(P < 0.05) cellular inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. Silicon(Si)is considered a potential alternative anode for next-generation Li-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and ***,the commercial use of Si anodes is hindered by their large volume expansion(~300%).Numerous efforts have been made to address this *** these efforts,Si-graphite co-utilization has attracted attention as a reasonable alternative for high-energy anodes.A comparative study of representative commercial Si-based materials,such as Si nanoparticles,Si suboxides,and Si−Graphite composites(SiGC),was conducted to characterize their overall performance in high-energy lithium-ion battery(LIB)design by incorporating conventional ***-Si was found to exhibit poor electrochemical performance,with severe volume expansion during *** suboxide provided excellent cycling stability in a full-cell evaluation with stable volume variation after 50 cycles,but had a large irreversible capacity and remarkable volume expansion during the first *** displayed a good initial Coulombic efficiency and the lowest volume change in the first cycle owing to the uniformly distributed nano-Si layer on graphite;however,its long-term cycling stability was relatively *** complement each disadvantage of Si suboxide and SiGC,a new combination of these Si-based anodes was suggested and a reasonable improvement in overall battery performance was successfully achieved.

The CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys(HEAs)with a(face-centered cubic) FCC structure has garnered considerable attention for its exceptional ductility and strain hardening ***,its yield strength is insufficient for structural *** this study,strengthening mechanisms in these HEAs were investigated to gain insight into the mechanical properties according to alloy powder ***,we present a novel approach to achieve both high strength and high ductility through the creation of a bimodal structure consisting of both coarse and fine grains via gas atomization and spark plasma sintering processes.A bimodally structured HEA prepared with a mass ratio of 2:8 between coarse particles(75-106 μm) and fine particles(≤25 μm)yielded optimal results,with a strength of 491.95 MPa and elongation of 19.64%.This strength value represents an~41% increase compared with the sample that displayed a fine single microstructure(347.08 MPa for yield strength).The strength enhancement was attributed to the prevention of plastic deformation initiation from the fine particles during *** innovative approach to the creation of HEAs with bimodal structures shows promise for various applications,such as structural components that require a combination of high strength and high ductility.

Background:We examined the comparative associations between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLD)definitions with risk of developing chronic kidney disease(CKD)and abnormal ***:We conducted a cohort study of 214,145 Korean adults with normal kidney function at baseline who underwent liver *** were further subdivided into no steatotic liver disease(no-SLD),NAFLD-only,MASLD-only,both NAFLD and MASLD,and SLD not categorized as NAFLD or MASLD *** proportional hazards models were used to analyze the risk of incident CKD and ***:Compared with either the no-NAFLD or no-MASLD groups,the NAFLD and MASLD groups were associated with a higher risk of incident CKD(NAFLD:adjusted hazard ratio(HR),1.18[95%CI,1.01-1.38];MASLD:adjusted HR,1.21[95%CI,1.04-1.39]).Among the five subgroups,both NAFLD and MASLD group had the strongest association with risk of incident CKD(adjusted HR,1.21[95%CI,1.04-1.42]).The MASLD-only group had the strongest association with incident abnormal albuminuria,with an adjusted HR comparable to that of the both NAFLD and MASLD group(adjusted HR 1.96[95%CI,1.44-2.67]for the MASLD-only,and adjusted HR 1.98[95%CI,1.58-2.49]for the both NAFLD and MASLD group versus the no-SLD group).The NAFLD-only group was not independently associated with risk of CKD or abnormal ***:These findings suggest that MASLD definition identifies individuals at high risk of developing incident CKD or abnormal albuminuria better than NAFLD definition.

Characteristics of spherical particles on copper powder and changing sizes were studied in a ball mill under various experimental conditions,such as different ball diameters,high rotation speeds,and milling times,using a discrete element method(DEM)*** experiment has investigated the characteristics of spherical particle morphology evolution involved in the mechanical alloying of copper *** morphological evolution of the copper particle was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).A spherical copper particle was shown with a roundness value using imageJ *** DEM was used to simulate the ball motion in a planetary ball mill,and the impact energy and shear energy generated during the collision were analyzed to estimate the contact number between the ball and the ball ***,as the size of the ball decreased,the number of ball-to-ball and ball-to-wall contacts increased accordingly,and the spherical shape of the copper powder changed.
