Vector surveillance is very key in solving mosquito-borne health problems in *** this end,the composition and distribution of mosquito vectors in a peri-urban community surrounding an institution of learning in Lafia metropolis,Nasarawa State,Central Nigeria was carried out between December 2016 and June *** Prokopack Aspirator was used to collect indoor resting mosquitoes between 6:00 *** 9:00 *** 30 randomly selected *** collected were knocked down and transferred into a well labelled petri-dish and taken to the laboratory for processing.A total of 664 mosquitoes were collected which spread across Culex quinquefasciatus 572(86.14%),Anopheles gambiae 88(13.25%)and Aedes aegypti 4(0.60%).The abundance of mosquitoes in relation to seasons,species,sex,abdominal conditions as well as transmission indices across seasons significantly varied(Pribution of mosquito in relation to house types showed no significant difference(P>0.05).The inhabitants of the area should ensure that all drainages flow through so as to reduce mosquito breeding ***,members of the community should always protect themselves by sleeping under insecticide treated bed nets.

Exposure to dietary mercury alters cognition and behavior of zebra finches

Environmental stressors can negatively affect avian cognitive abilities, potentially reducing fitness, for example by altering response to predators, display to mates, or memory of locations of food. We expand on current knowledge by investigating the effects of dietary mercury, a ubiquitous en- vironmental pollutant and known neurotoxin, on avian cognition. Zebra finches Taeniopygia gut- tata were dosed for their entire lives with sub-lethal levels of mercury, at the environmentally rele- vant dose of 1.2 parts per million. In our.f.rst study, we compared the dosed birds with controls of the same age using tests of three cognitive abilities： spatial memory, inhibitory control, and color association. In the spatial memory assay, birds were tested on their ability to learn and remember the location of hidden food in their cage. The inhibitory control assay measured their ability to ig- nore visible but inaccessible food in favor of a learned behavior that provided the same reward. finally, the color association task tested each bird＇s ability to associate a specific color with the presence of hidden food. Dietary mercury negatively affected spatial memory ability but not inhibi- tory control or color association. Our second study focused on three behavioral assays not tied to a specific skill or problem-solving： activity level, neophobia, and social dominance. Zebra finches exposed to dietary mercury throughout their lives were subordinate to, and more active than, con- trol birds. We found no evidence that mercury exposure influenced our metric of neophobia. Together, these results suggest that sub-lethal exposure to environmental mercury selectively harms neurological pathways that control different cognitive abilities, with complex effects on be- havior and fitness.

Probiotic metabolites from Bacillus coagulans GanedenBC30^(TM) support maturation of antigen-presenting cells in vitro

AIM:To study the effects of probiotic metabolites on maturation stage of antigen-presenting immune ***:Ganeden Bacillus coagulans 30(GBC30) bacterial cultures in log phase were used to isolate the secreted metabolite(MET) fraction.A second fraction was made to generate a crude cell-wall-enriched fraction,by centr.f.gation and lysis,followed by washing.A preparation of MET was subjected to size exclusion centr.f.gation,generating three fractions:re tested in comparison to crude MET and cell wall in primary cultures of human peripheral blood mononuclear cell(PBMC) as a source of antigen-presenting mononuclear *** maturation status of mononuclear phagocytes was evaluated by staining with monoclonal antibodies towards CD14,CD16,CD80 and CD86 and analyzed by flow ***:Treatment of PBMC with MET supported maturation of mononuclear phagocytes toward both macrophage and dendritic cell *** biological activity unique to the metabolites included a reduction of CD14+ CD16+ pro-inflammatory cells,and this property was associated with the high molecular weight metabolite *** were also seen for the dendritic cell maturation markers CD80 and *** CD14dim cells,an increase in both CD80 and CD86 expression was seen,in contrast to a selective increase in CD86 expression on CD14bright *** co-expression of CD80 and CD86 indicates effective antigen presentation to T cells and support of T helper cell *** selective expression of CD86 in the absence of CD80 points to a role in generating T regulatory ***:The data show that a primary mechanism of action of GBC30 metabolites involves support of more mature phenotypes of antigen-presenting cells,important for immunological decision-making.

Surgical management of facial dog bite trauma:A contemporary perspective and review

Objective:To perform a review evaluating management of and complications stemming from dog bite trauma sustained to the head and neck over the past *** Sources:PubMed and Cochrane ***:The authors searched the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases for relevant published literature.A total of 12 peer-reviewed canine-exclusive series inclusive of 1384 patient cases describing facial dog bite trauma met inclusion *** including fractures,lacerations,contusions,and other soft-tissue injuries were *** related to clinical course and management,operating room requirements,and antibiotic usage were compiled and *** trauma and surgical management complications were also ***:75.5%of patients sustaining dog bites required surgical *** these patients,7.8%suffered from postsurgical complications,including hypertrophic scarring(4.3%),postoperative infection(0.8%),or nerve deficits and persistent paresthesias(0.8%).Prophylactic antibiotics were administered to 44.3%of patients treated for.f.cial dog bites and the overall infection rate was 5.6%.Concomitant fracture was present in 1.0%of ***:Primary closure,often in the Or may be necessary,with few cases requiring gr.f.s or *** should be aware that the most common complication is hypertrophic *** research is needed to elucidate the role of prophylactic antibiotics.

Incidence and Etiology of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection among Admitted Patients at Kabale regional r.f.rral Hospital, South Western Uganda

Introduction: Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection is the most common hospital acquired infection worldwide. Urinary Tract Infections among catheterised patients are on rise regardless of antibiotic use and this is due to erratic use of antibiotics, treatment failure, antimicrobial resistance and emergency of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase producing bacteria leading to patient distress, increased healthcare costs, long hospital stay and poor patient response to antibiotics. In Uganda, no previous studies have sought to study the burden of CAUTI among catheterized patients, the bacterial pathogens involved and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns yet there is upsurge in antimicrobial resistance of uropathogens. The effective management of patients suffering from Catheter Associated Urinary Tract infection (CAUTI) relays on the identification of uropathogens that cause CAUTI and the selection of an effective antibiotic agent to the uropathen in question. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine incidence, etiology and antibiotic susceptibility pattern among the uropathogens causing Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections among patients with indwelling catheters at Kabale regional r.f.rral Hospital. Methods: Using a descriptive prospective observational hospital-based study, the study was conducted on 150 catheterized patients recruited from Emergency, Obstetrics and gynecology, Medical, Maternity and Surgical wards at Kabale regional r.f.rral Hospital between April and May 2019. The urine samples from study participants were processed in Kabale rrH microbiology laboratory as per standard operating procedures. After isolation and identification, all the isolates were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing for commonly used antibiotics. results: following the urine culture from 150 catheterized patients, urine from 23 (15.3%) patients showed significant growth. Objectives: Cardiovascular malformations (CVMs) are reported to be common (～ 75% ) in patients with deletion 22q11.2 (del22q11) syndrome. To better underst and why deletions go unrecognized, we characterized the phenotype in deleted ind ividuals in two large kindreds with particular emphasis on the presence or absen ce of CVM. Study design: After the diagnosis of del22q11 in two unrelated proban ds with CVM, we sequentially evaluated family members with clinical evaluation a nd cytogenetic analysis. results: Del22q11 was identified in 13 individuals; all exhibited characteristic dysmorphic facial features, but a CVM was present in o nly 6 of 13 (46% ) individuals. Conclusions: We speculate that in the absence o f CVM, diagnosis of del22q11 is hampered by a failure to recognize extracardiac features of the del22q11 syndrome spectrum. The data highlight the need for prim ary care physicians and specialists to familiarize themselves with the extracard iac stigmata of del22q11 to ensure timely diagnosis in all family members.

Photodynamics and quantum efficiency of germanium vacancy color centers in diamond

Color centers in diamond—especially group Ⅳ defects—have been advanced as a viable solidstate platform for quantum photonics and information technologies. We investigate the photodynamics and characteristics of germanium-vacancy(GeV) centers hosted in high-pressure high-temperature diamond nanocrystals. Through back-focal plane imaging, we analyze the far.f.eld radiation pattern of the investigated emitters and derive a crossed-dipole emission, which is strongly aligned along one axis. We use this information in combination with lifetime measurements to extract the decay rate statistics of the GeV emitters and determine their quantum efficiency, which we estimated to be ～(22 ± 2)%. Our results offer.f.rther insight into the photodynamic properties of the GeV center in nanodiamonds and confirm its suitability as a desirable system for quantum technologies.
