This paper presents a statement of the works performed in L.E.M.T.A by the members of the thermal and mechanical heterogeneous media research group during the last six years concerning the solving of coupled conductive and radiative heat transfers within a multilayer and semi-transparent“wall”.Out of the authors,this paper allows to take inspiration from the works of ***,*** and ***[19,20,21].The aim of these works is to represent in a macroscopic way,with the minimum number of thermophysical parameters,the heat transfers in a plane system composed of semi-transparent *** approach we propose is semi-analytic(Kernel substitution technique,Laplace transformation)and allow to obtain in the Laplace domain an analytical solution that can be easily *** method can be applied in two main scopes of applications:the estimation of thermophysical properties(phononic conductivity,optical thickness,Planck number for instance)of semi-transparent materials(glasses,crystals,glass wool,semi-conductors,synthetic diamonds,vitroceramics and so on)and the modelling of processes with semitransparent walls(for instance bottles forming,flat glass production,drying of paper).The method will be first presented and validated and two examples of applications will be then *** method can be applied to semitransparent walls that emit,absorb and scatter the radiant energy(participating medium).It appears from the principle of a Kernel substitution technique applied to the radiative flux expression and initially introduced by Lick[1]that allows to change the character of the governing heat equation from the integro-differential form to a purely differential *** the case of limiting cases of purely scattering and purely absorbing media,the solution of the radiative transfer equation is *** the general case,we make a two-flux *** all cases,we assume a linear transfer and use the Laplace *** method can be applied to grey or grey by bands

Challenges in enriching milk fat with polyunsaturated fatty acids

Milk fatty acid composition is determined by several factors including diet. The milk fatty acid profile of dairy cows is low in polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially those of the n-3 series. Efforts to change and influence fatty acid profile with longer chain polyunsaturated fatty acids have proven challenging. Several barriers prevent easy transfer of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids to milk fat including rumen biohydrogenation and fatty acid esterification. The potential for cellular uptake and differences in fatty acid incorporation into milk fat might also have an effect, though this has received less research effort. Given physiological impediments to enriching milk fat with polyunsaturated fatty acids, manipulating the genome of the cow might provide a greater increase than diet alone, but this too may be challenged by the physiology of the cow.

Implementation of Interrogation Systems for Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

The development of two simple methods for wavelength-optical intensity modulation techniques for fiber Bragg grating （FBG） sensors is presented. The performance is evaluated by measuring the strain and temperature. The first method consists of a narrow band source, an optical circulator, an FBG; and a power meter. The source and Bragg reflected signal from the FBG need to be matched to get linear results with good power levels. The source spectral power levels are very critical in this study. The power reflected from a matched reference FBG is fed into the measuring FBG in the second method. Since the FBGs are matched, the entire power is reflected back initially. During the measurement, the change in the measurand causes the reflected power from the sensing FBG to vary. A costly high resolution spectrum analyzer is required only during the characterization of the FBG and source. The performances of two interrogators are compared by measuring the strain and temperature. In the second method, the strain measurements can be made insensitive to the temperature variation by selecting a source with a flat spectrum at the measurement range. Highlights of these methods are the portability, cost effectiveness and better resolution.

The role of nuclear receptors in regulation of Th 17/Treg biology and its implications for diseases

Nuclear receptors in the cell play essential roles in environmental sensing, differentiation, development, homeostasis, and metabolism and are thus highly conserved across multiple species. The anti-inflammatory role of nuclear receptors in immune cells has recently gained recognition. Nuclear receptors play critical roles in both myeloid and lymphoid cells, particularly in helper CD4＋ T-cell type 17 （Th17） and regulatory T cells （Treg）. Th17 and Treg are closely related cell fates that are determined by orchestrated cytokine signaling. recent studies have emphasized the interactions between nuclear receptors and the known cytokine signals and how such interaction affects Th 17/Treg development and function. This review will focus on the most recent discoveries concerning the roles of nuclear receptors in the context of therapeutic applications in autoimmune diseases.

This paper deals with representations of groups by "affine" automorphisms of compact, convex spaces, with special focus on "irreducible" representations: equivalently"minimal" actions. When the group in question is P SL(2, r), the authors exhibit a oneone correspondence between bounded harmonic functions on the upper half-plane and a certain class of irreducible representations. This analysis shows that, surprisingly, all these representations are equivalent. In fact, it is found that all irreducible affine representations of this group are equivalent. The key to this is a property called "linear Stone-Weierstrass"for group actions on compact spaces. If it holds for the "universal strongly proximal space"of the group(to be defined), then the induced action on the space of probability measures on this space is the unique irreducible affine representation of the group.

Asynchronous consensus for optimal power flow control in smart grid with zero power mismatch

The heterogeneous nature of smart grid components and the desire for smart grids to be scalable,stable and respect customer privacy have led to the need for more distributed control paradigms. In this paper we provide a distributed optimal power flow solution for a smart distribution network with separable global costs, separable non-convex constraints, and inseparable linear constraints,while considering important aspects of network operation such as distributed generation and load mismatch, and nodal voltage constraints. An asynchronous averaging consensus protocol is developed to estimate the values of inseparable global information. The consensus protocol is then combined with a fully distributed primal dual optimization utilizing an augmented Lagrange function to ensure convergence to a feasible solution with respect to power flow and power mismatch constraints. The presented algorithm uses only local and neighbourhood communication to simultaneously find the mismatch between power generation, line loss and loads, to calculate nodal voltages,and to minimize distributed costs, leading to a completely distributed solution of the global problem. An IEEE test feeder system with a reasonable number of nodes is used to illustrate the proposed method and efficiency.

Structural characterization of carboxyl cellulose nanofibers extracted from underutilized sources

Two different chemical methods, TEMPO-oxidation and nitro-oxidation, were used to extract carboxyl cellulose nanofibers(CNFs) from non-wood biomass sources(i.e., jute, soft and hard spinifex grasses). The combined TEMPO-oxidation and homogenization approach was very efficient to produce CNFs from the cellulose component of biomass;however, the nitrooxidation method was also found to be effective to extract CNFs directly from raw biomass even without mechanical *** effect of these two methods on the resulting cross-section dimensions of CNFs was investigated by solution small-angle Xray scattering(SAXS), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The UV-Vis spectroscopic data from 0.1 wt% TEMPO-oxidized nanofiber(TOCNF) and nitro-oxidized nanofiber(NOCNF) suspensions showed that TOCNF had the highest transparency(> 95%) because of better dispersion, resulted from the highest carboxylate content(1.2 mmol/g). The consistent scattering and microscopic results indicated that TOCNFs from jute and spinifex grasses possessed rectangular cross-sections, while NOCNFs exhibited near square cross-sections. This study revealed that different oxidation methods can result in different degrees of biomass exfoliation and different CNF morphology.

Sedimentation acceleration of remanent iron oxide by magnetic flocculation

Sedimentation based processes are widely used in industry to separate particles from a liquid phase. Since the advent of the ＂Nanoworld＂ the demand for effective separation technologies has rapidly risen, calling for the development of new separation concepts, one of which lies in hybrid separation using the superposition of a magnetic field for magnetic particles. Possible product portfolio of such separation consists of pigment production, nanomagnetics production for electronics and bio separation, A promising step in that direction is magnetic field enhanced cake filtration, which has by now progressed from batch to continuous ooeration. In sedimentation processes in a mass force field the settling behaviour of particles strongly depends on physico-chemical properties, concentration and size distribution of the particles. By adjusting the pH, the interparticle forces, in particular the electrostatic repulsion, can be manipulated. For remanent magnetic particles such as magnetite, pre-treatment in a magnetic field could lead to a change of interparticle interactions. By magnetizing the particles apart from van der Waals attraction and electrostatic repulsion, an additional potential is induced, the magnetic attraction, which could easily dominate the other potentials and result in agglomeration in the primary minimum. By sedimentation analysis, a wide spectrum of parameters like pH, magnetic field strength and concentration have been investigated. The results show a strong increase of sedimentation velocity by magnetic flocculation of the raw suspension. This leads to a rise in throughput due to the acceleration of sedimentation kinetics by imparting a non-chemical interaction to the physico-chemical properties in the feed stream of the separation apparatus.

The East London glaucoma prediction score: web-based validation of glaucoma risk screening tool

AIM:It is difficult for Optometrists and General Practitioners to know which patients are at risk. The East London glaucoma prediction score (ELGPS) is a web based risk calculator that has been developed to determine Glaucoma risk at the time of screening. Multiple risk factors that are available in a low tech environment are assessed to provide a risk assessment. This is extremely useful in settings where access to specialist care is difficult. Use of the calculator is educational. It is a free web based service. Data capture is user specific. METHODS:The scoring system is a web based questionnaire that captures and subsequently calculates the relative risk for the presence of Glaucoma at the time of screening. Three categories of patient are described:Unlikely to have Glaucoma; Glaucoma Suspect and Glaucoma. A case review methodology of patients with known diagnosis is employed to validate the calculator risk assessment. rESULTS:Data from the patient records of 400 patients with an established diagnosis has been captured and used to validate the screening tool. The website reports that the calculated diagnosis correlates with the actual diagnosis 82% of the time. Biostatistics analysis showed:Sensitivity = 88% ; Positive predictive value = 97%; Specificity = 75%. CONCLUSION:Analysis of the first 400 patients validates the web based screening tool as being a good method of screening for the at risk population. The validation is ongoing. The web based format will allow a more widespread recruitment for different geographic, population and personnel variables.
