A field experiment with cotton was conducted on a well drained, calcareous, clay loamy Typic Xerochreptto investigate the utility of sewage sludge as a partial substitute for fertilizers and the influence of its application on the basic soil properties and heavy metal concentrations. The experimental design was completelyrandomized blocks with five treatments replicated four times each. Sewage sludge came from the treatmentplant of the municipality of Volos, central Greece, with the following characteristics: organic matter content36.6 %, pH (H2O 1:5) 6.89, cacO3 53.4 g kg-1 , total N 26.5 g kg--1, total P 33.5 g kg--1 , and total K 968mg kg--1 soil. Heavy metal concentrations were cd 5.24, Pb 442, Ni 38, cu 224, Zn 1 812, and Mn 260 mgkg--1 dry weight, respectively. The soil was high in potassium (K) and poor in available phosphorus (P). Theresults showed that sewage sludge application increased cotton yield and K and P concentrations in cottonleaves. Soil pH was reduced in the case of higher sewage sludge rate. Electrical conductivity, organic mattercontent, total N, and available P were significantly increased. Total concentrations of Zn, Pb, and cu wereslightly increased. dTPA-extractable Zn, cu and Mn were also significantly increased. Available forms ofall heavy metals, except cd, were significantly correlated with organic matter content in a positive way andnegatively with soil pH.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTc) on soil microorganisms and the availability of pH characterization medium in BIOLOG plates. Application of TTc decreased the color development sharply and resulted in a great biocidal effect on the growth and reproduction of soil microorganisms, indicating that TTc can affect the discrimination on soil microbial community. The microtitration plates with 21 carbon sources and two different pH levels (4.7 and 7.0) were used to determine microbial community structure of eight red soils. The average utilization (average well colour development) of the carbon sources in the plates with different pH levels generally followed the same sigmoidal pattern as that in the traditional BIOLOG plates, but the pH 4.7 plates increased the discrimination of this technique, compared with the pH 7.0 plates. Since most tested soils are acid, it seemed that it’s better to use a suitable pH characterization medium for a specific soil in the sole carbon source test.

We present a novel method for the solution of the diffusion equation on a composite AMR mesh. This approach is suitable for including diffusion based physics modules to hydrocodes that support ALE and AMR capabilities. To illustrate, we proffer our implementations of diffu- sion based radiation transport and heat conduction in a hydrocode called ALE-AMR. Numerical experiments conducted with the diffusion solver and associated physics packages yield 2nd order convergence in the L2 norm.

Granite-hosted,Nb-,Ta-,Sn-,U-,Th-,and Zr(Hf)-bearing mineralization from the Abu Rusheid shear zones occurs about 97 km southwest of the town of Marsa Alam,South Eastern desert,*** SSE-trending brittle-ductile Abu Rusheid shear zones crosscut the peralkalic granitic gneisses and cataclastic to mylonitic rocks(mylonite,protomlyonite,and ultramylonite).The northern shear zone varies in width from 1 to 3 m with a strike length of >500 m,and the southern shear zone is 0.5 to 8 m wide and >1 km *** shear zones locally host less altered lamprophyre and locally sheared granitic aplite-pegmatite *** rare-metal minerals,identified from the peralkalic granitic gneisses and cataclastic to mylonitic rocks are associated with muscovite,chlorite,quartz,fluorite,pyrite,magnetite,and rare biotite that are restricted to the Abu Rusheid shear zones;these are columbite-tantalite and pyrochlore(***) in the northern shear zone and ferrocolumbite in the southern shear *** occurs as inclusions in the columbite-tantalite minerals.U-and Th-minerals(uraninite,thorite,uranothorite,ishikawaite,and cheralite) and Hf-rich zircon ***(?) zircon contains numerous inclusions of rutile,fluorite,U-Th and REE minerals,such as uranothorite,cheralite,monazite,and *** variations in Ta/(Ta+Nb) and Mn/(Mn+Fe) in columbite range from 0.07-0.42 and 0.04-0.33,respectively,and Hf contents in zircon from 1.92-6.46 of the two mineralized shear zones reflect the extreme degree of magmatic *** samples of peralkalic granitic gneisses and cataclastic to mylonitic rocks from the southern shear zone have very low TiO2(0.02 wt%-0.04 wt%),Sr [(15-20)×10-6],and Ba [(47-78)×10-6],with high Fe2O3T(0.94 wt%-1.99 wt%),caO(0.14 wt%-1.16 wt%),alkalis(9.2 wt%-10.1 wt%),Rb [(369-805)×10-6],Zr [(1033-2261)×10-6],Nb [(371-913)×10-6],U [(51-108)×10-6],Th [(36-110)×10-6],Ta [(38-108)×10-6],Pb [(39-364)×10-6],Zn [(21-424)×10-6],Y [(8-304)×10-6],Hf

Synthetic fibers made from nylon or polypropylene have gained application when loose and woven into geo textile form although no information on the matrix’s mechanical performance is obtained so that more understanding of their structural contribution to resist cracking can be determined. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to determine the performance characteristics of concrete reinforced with a polypropylene structural fiber. In this investigation “Fiber mesh” brand of fibers manufactured by SL concrete System, Tennessee, USA and marketed by M/S Millennium Building System, Inc., Ban-galore, India are used. The lengths of the fibers used were 24 mm. Fiber dosages used were 0.9, 1.8, 2.7 kg/m3. A total of three mixtures, one for each fiber dosage were made. A standard slump cone test was conducted on the fresh concrete mix with and without fibers to determine the workability of the mix. The test program included the evaluation of hardened concrete properties such as compressive, split tensile, modulus of rupture and flexural strengths. The increase in compressive strength is about 36.25%, 26.20%, and 23.75% respectively that of plain concrete. This increase in strength was directly proportional to amount of fibers present in the mix. The increase in flexural strength for Mixes I^III is about 21%, 16.6%, and 23% respectively that of plain concrete specimens. An experimental investigation was also made to study the behaviors of reinforced fibers concrete beams (with longitudinal reinforcements) under two-point loading. The deflection and crack patterns were also studied. The improvements in strength and ductility characteristics were discussed.
