First Detection of Human Polyomaviruses in HIV Patients with Suspected Neurological Disease in Montería, Colombia

Objective: The objective is to establish the presence of JC and/or BK polyomavirus in HIV patients with symptoms of encephalitis and/or meningitis. Methodology: From September 2009 to December 2011, a prospective study was conducted. 34 HIV patients with symptoms consistent with encephalitis and/or meningitis were included. The work was conducted in 3 hospitals in the city of Monteria. Viral DNA extraction was performed on samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using a commercial kit (Quiagen, USA). The detection of BKV and JCV was performed by multiplex real-time PCR (LightMix?, Roche Diagnostics, Germany) with primers specific for the short t antigen gene fragment, labeled probes and one internal control. Results: In 9 (26%) of 34 patients included in the study, JCV virus was detected;only 1 (3%) patient had coinfection with JCV/BKV. The mortality rate was 3%. The cytochemical examination of CSF in positive patients presented average values: 40.7 mg/dL glucose, 171.66 mg/dL protein, 19.8 mm3 leukocytes, and 109.8 mm3 erythrocytes. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that JCV and BKV have a significant occurrence in HIV patients with CSF infections in Monteria.

Photon nanosieves,as amplitude-type metasurfaces,have been demonstrated usually in a transmission mode for optical super-focusing,display,and holography,but the sieves with subwavelength size constrain optical transmission,thus leading to low ***,we report reflective photon nanosieves that consist of metallic meta-mirrors sitting on a trans-parent quartz *** illumination,these meta-mirrors offer the reflectance of〜50%,which is higher than the transmission of visible light through diameter-identical *** from this configuration,a meta-mirror-based reflective hologram has been demonstrated with good consistence between theoretical and experimental results over the broadband spectrum from 500 nm to 650 nm,meanwhile exhibiting total efficiency of〜7%.Additionally,if an additional high-reflectance layer is employed below these meta-mirrors,the efficiency can be enhanced further for optical anti-counterfeiting.

The aging of bitumen has a significant impact on the mechanical behavior of asphalt. This aging is carried out at the mixing operation with the aggregates generally at 163°C in the case of pure mixtures or at temperatures higher than in the case of the modification by polymers or industrial waste. This paper presents experimental results of a study of the rheological behavior of a class of bitumen 40/50 to the artificial aging. Three aging temperatures were selected: 163°C, 173°C and 183°C. From obtained results, a study of the risk of deformation of asphalt is performed, based on the results of correlation between the behavior of the coated and his binder deducted SHRP specifications and technical advice French. These results show that the stiffness of the aged binders increases with aging temperature. Moreover, there is no risk of rutting and fatigue cracking for thermal coated projected.

The aim of this work was to compare the use of local intrauterine moist heat infusion to intrauterine antibiotics infusion, for treatment of subclinical endometritis which affects reproduction and milk production. 42 repeat breeder cows were divided into 4 groups, group 1 was the untreated control (=10 cows). Group 2 (=10 cows) was treated by 50 ml of Oxytetracycline 5% intrauterine for three successive weeks. Group 3 (=10 cows) intrauterine infusion with 30 ml saline adding to them 10 ml Gentamycin 10% and 10 ml penicillin and streptomycin for three successive weeks. Group 4 (=12 cows) intrauterine infusion with 50 ml sterile boiling water (≈100°C) was applied directly to the uterus for only one time. Leukogram was done before and after treatment, it showed leukocytosis and neutrophilia in all the study groups. After treatment for 36 hours and one week, there were no significant changes in the leukogram results of groups 1, 2 and 3. While in Group 4 showed decreasing in numbers of leukocytes (11.92 ± 0.75) and neutrophils (0.87 ± 0.16) to its normal limits after 36 hours and one-week post-treatment. Our new method gave the highest cumulative pregnancy rate 83.3% while other groups using antibiotics or antibiotics with saline gave lower pregnancy rate 40% and 50% respectively (P > 0.001). We named this new treatment method “samia-treat;SAT”. SAT is a whole new and effective treatment for cases of repeat breeder which are caused by SCE in dairy cows;it caused increase in reproductive performance and cumulative pregnancy rate without over use of antibiotics.

Detailed characterization of fabric reinforcements is necessary to ensure the quality of manufactured composite parts, and subsequently to prevent structural failure during service. A lack of consensus and standardization exists in selecting test methods for the mechanical characterization of fabrics. Moreover, in reality, during any experimentation there are sources of uncertainties which may result in inconsistencies in the interpretation of data and the comparison of different testing methods. The aim of this article is to show how simple statistical data analysis methods may be used to enhance the characterization of composite fabrics under individual and combined loading modes while accounting for inherent material/test uncertainties. Results using a typical glass non-crimp fabric (NCF) show that, statistically, there are significant differences between the warp and weft direction responses of a presumably balanced NCF under all deformation modes, with weft yarns being generally stiffer. Moreover, the statistical significance of warp-weft couplings under both simultaneous and sequential biaxial-shear loading modes became statistically evident, when compared to a pure biaxial deformation.

Florid Autonomic Features Associated with Medullary Lacunar Stroke

Introduction: Autonomic nuclei affection results in variations in hemodynamics, temperature, sweating and ECG. Medullary strokes are challenging in their presentation, bizarre clinical signs, work and neurological outcome. The commonest cause is infarction of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). Anatomical areas affected include the inferior cerebellar peduncle, dorsolateral medulla, nuclei of the Trigeminal, vestibular nuclei, Ninth and Vagus nerves. The descending sympathetic tracts and spin thalamic tracts. Serious cardiopulmonary events can complicate 11% of cases. Case Presentation: A middle-aged female developed sub-acute dizziness associated with vomiting and right head pains. She was unable to walk but remained cognitively clear. Her gastrointestinal symptoms were disabling and this was the main factor for presenting to the emergency room. The risk factors included hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Imaging studies were essential for posterior circulation stroke diagnosis and follow-up. She manifested remarkable autonomic features regarding the skin and hemodynamics. Nevertheless, the hospital course was controllable. Discussion: This case report was consistent with relevant literature in the contra lateral vaso motor changes and drop in body temperature during the acute phase. Moreover, our patient developed clinical and radiological extension through double antiplatelets. Superiority of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in this patient enabled better diagnostic accuracy in a brainstem stroke. Conclusion: The autonomic features, in this case, represent major symptomatology and clinical signs. The variation in the hemodynamics and persistence of symptoms is thought provoking. This increases the awareness of emergency doctors for acute stroke presenting with autonomic features will enable early detection and helps outcome.
