Comparison of Cardiorespiratory and Metabolic Responses Between Kettlebell Half Marathon and Treadmill Running at the Same Average Oxygen Consumption: A Case Study

Purposes In kettlebell sport(KS)half marathon,the lift of the kettlebell is required for the highest number of repetitions in 30 *** data are available on cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses during this exercise *** aim of the study was to evaluate cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses to KS half marathon compared to 30 min treadmill running,chosen as a reference paradigm of aerobic exercise,at the same average oxygen consumption(VO_(2)).Methods A male elite KS athlete was enrolled in two trials separated by 7 days of *** the first trial,one-hand long-cycle KS exercise with a 1/3 body weight kettlebell was performed for 30 min(kettlebell half marathon,KT);in the second trial,30 min treadmill running(TR)was performed at the same average VO2 measured in the first trial(speed 9-10 km/h at 1°uphill inclination).Metabolic and cardiopulmonary assessments[respiratory exchange ratio(RER),tidal volume(TV),breathing frequency(f),minute ventilation(VE)],blood lactate(BL)kinetics,heart rate(HR),and blood pressure(BP)were measured in both experimental *** The average VO_(2) was 33.3 mL/min/kg in KT and 30.6 mL/min/kg in *** subject achieved RER_(peak) 1.17,RER_(mean) 0.98,HR_(peak) 172 bpm(94% HR_(max)),HR_(mean) 86% of HR_(max),BP_(peak) 220/100 mmHg in KT,BL_(peak) 7.2 mmol/L(during trial)in KT and RER_(peak) 1.13,RER_(mean) 0.89,HR_(peak) 142 bpm(78%HR_(max)),HR_(mean) 70% of HR_(max),BP_(peak) 160/80 mmHg,BL_(peak) 3.5 mmol/L(4 min after trial)mmol/L in *** Data indicate that a KS half marathon determines much higher cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses to treadmill running performed at similar VO_(2).

The world is experiencing aging of its population. Age-specific incidence rates of cancer are higher and cancer is now recognized as a part of aging. Treating older patients can be challenging. The clinical behavior of some tumors changes with age and the aging process itself brings physiological changes leading to decline in the function of organs. It is essential to identify those patients with longer life expectancy, potentially more likely to benefit from aggressive treatment vs. those that are more vulnerable to adverse outcomes. A primary determination when considering therapy for an older cancer patient is a patient's physiologic, rather than chronologic age. In order to differentiate amongst patients of the same age, it is useful to determine if a patient is fit or frail. Frail older adults have multiple chronic conditions and difficulties maintaining independence. They may be more vulnerable to therapy toxicities, and may not have substantial lasting benefits from therapy. Geriatric assessment(GA) may be used as a tool to determine reversible deficits and devise treatment strategies to mitigate such deficits. GA is also used in treatment decision making by clinicians, helping to risk stratify patients prior to potentially high-risk therapy. An important practical aspect of GA is the feasibility of incorporating it into a busy oncology practice. Key considerations in performing the GA include: available resources, patient population, GA tools to use, and who will be responsible for using the GA results and develop care plans. Challenges in implementing GA in clinical practice will be discussed.

Engineering magnetic nanostructures with inverse hysteresis loops

Top-down lithography techniques allow the fabrication of nanostructured elements with novel spin configurations, which provide a new route to engineer and manipulate the magnetic response of sensors and electronic devices and understand the role of fundamental interactions in materials science. In this study, shallow nanostructure-patterned thin films were designed to present inverse magnetization curves, i.e., an anomalous magnetic mechanism characterized by a negative coercivity and negative remanence. This procedure involved a method for manipulating the spin configuration that yielded a negative coercivity after the patterning of a single material layer. Patterned NiFe thin films with trench depths between 15%-25% of the total film thickness exhibited inverse hysteresis loops for a wide angular range of the applied field and the trench axis. A model based on two exchange-coupled subsystems accounts for the experimental results and thus predicts the conditions for the appearance of this magnetic behavior. The findings of the study not only advance our understanding of patterning effects and confined magnetic systems but also enable the local design and control of the magnetic response of thin materials with potential use in sensor engineering.

Monoclonal Antibody Production and Immunolocalization of a Salinity Stress-Related Protein in Rice (Oryza sativa)

Among various physiological responses to salt stress, the synthesis of a lectin-related protein of 14.5 kDa was observed in rice plants （Oryza sativa L.） under the treatment of 170 mmol/L NaCl. In order to better understand the role of the SALT protein in the physiological processes involving salinity, it was irnmunolocalized in mesophilic cells of leaf sheath and blade of a rice variety IAC-4440 following monoclonal antibodies produced by hybridome culture technique. This variety turned out to be an excellent model for that purpose, since it accumulates SALT protein even in absence of salt treatment and it has been classified as moderately sensitive to salinity and a superior grain producer. This feature was relevant for this work since it allowed the use of plants without the deleterious effects caused by salinity. Immunocytochemistry assays revealed that the SALT protein is located in the stroma of chloroplasts under non-stressing condition. Since the chloroplast is the main target affected by salinity and considering that the SALT protein does not present any apparent signal peptide for organelle localization, its lectin-like activity seems to play an important role in the establishment of stable complexes, either to other proteins or to oligosaccharides that are translocated to the chloroplast.
