Do non-target species visit feeders and water troughs targeting small game?A study from farmland Spain using camera-trapping

Provision of food and water is a widespread tool implemented around the world for the benefit of game and other wildlife,but factors affecting the use of food and water by non-target species are poorly *** evaluated visits to feeders and water troughs by non-game species using camera-traps in two separate areas of *** and water troughs were either“protected”(when surrounded by more than 50%of shrubs/forest)or“open”(in the opposite case).A total of 18948 photos from 5344 camera-trapping days depicted animals,and 75 species were *** and water troughs were visited by target species(partridges and lagomorphs,55.3%of visits)and non-target species(44.7%of visits).Among the latter,corvids were themost common(46.1%of visits),followed by rodents(26.8%),other birds(23.6%,mainly passerines),columbids(1.9%),and other species at minor *** highest proportion of visiting days to feeders and water troughs was from corvids(0.173)followed by otherbirds(0.109)and rodents(0.083);the lowest proportion was recorded for columbids(0.016).Use intensity and visit frequency of water troughs tripled that recorded in feeders,and visits to open feeders/troughs were approximately twice those to protected *** summary:feeders and water troughs targeting small game species are also used regularly by non-target ones;they should be set close to cover to optimize their use by non-target species that are not competitors of target species(though corvids may visit them);water availability should be prioritized where drought periods are expected.

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility(GB1F)was established to make biodiversity data freely and openly available via the *** date more than 100 million biodiversity records are downloadable from *** is the result of GBIF's initial 5-year(pilot)phase moreover a new portal with new functionalities will be launched in early *** records currently available are made up of～2/3 specimen-based data and 1/3 being observational data. GBIF members and data users come from both developed as well as developing countries. To better mobilize and utilize biodiversity data GBIF identified capacity building as a key component of its work programme A variety of approaches have been used: from training activities around the world in 3 languages (English, French and Spanish) on technologies that allow data providers to put databases on line, to geo-referencing, how to deal with sensitive data and data modelling that fosters new and innovative uses of biodiversity data for decision-making. In addition, a successful mentoring programme, where more advanced nodes provide training and transfer of technologies and know how to those nodes in need he it in the developed or the developing world. We have also created a new capacity enhancement programme which focusses in both instutional and human capacity building in developing countries. Sharing of results and lessons learned of tile above-mentioned and other activities and plans for the future will be discussed.

Non-redundant Contribution of the Plastidial FAD8 ω-3 Desatumse to Glycerolipid Unsatumtion at Different Temperatures in Arabidopsis

Plastidial ω-3 desaturase FAD7 is a major contributor to trienoic fatty acid biosynthesis in the leaves of Arabidopsis plants. However, the precise contribution of the other plastidial ω-3 desaturase, FAD8, is poorly understood. Fatty acid and lipid analysis of several ω-3 desaturase mutants, including two insertion lines of AtFAD7 and AtFAD8, showed that FAD8 partially compensated the disruption of the AtFAD7 gene at 22℃, indicating that FAD8 was active at this growth temperature, contrasting to previous observations that circumscribed the FAD8 activity at low temperatures. Our data revealed that FAD8 had a higher selectivity for 18：2 acyl-lipid substrates and a higher preference for lipids other than galactolipids, particularly phosphatidylglycerol, at any of the temperatures studied. Differences in the mechanism controlling AtFAD7 and AtFAD8 gene expression at different temperatures were also detected. Confocal microscopy and biochemical analysis of FAD8-YFP over-expressing lines confirmed the chloroplast envelope localization of FAD8. Co-localization experiments suggested that FAD8 and FAD7 might be located in close vicinity in the envelope membrane. FAD8-YFP over-expressing lines showed a specific increase in 18：3 fatty acids at 22℃. Together, these results indicate that the function of both plastidial ω-3 desaturases is coordinated in a non-redundant manner.

Joint Bidding under Capacity Constraints

In this paper we analyze the anticompetitive effects of concentration of ownership in auction markets. We compare two different auction formats with uniform price. In the first, the price equals the highest accepted bid, whereas in the second the price equals the lowest rejected bid. For the former, and for a two-unit, two-plants, two-firms model, we find an equilibrium where all plants (all firms) bid according to a common bidding function. The concentration of the ownership has the same effect on the bidding behavior as eliminating one plant. However, the expected price is lower than the one expected in such three independent plant scenario. More surprisingly (and special to this 2 × 2 × 2 case), the equilibrium is efficient. In the latter, alternative auction format, firms bids asymmetrically for its two plants. Hence, the equilibrium is inefficient. Also, with this format, we show that the market price may be arbitrarily large. Thus, and contrary to some plausible expectation base in received auction theory, a (sealed-bid) auction format in which the price for a bidder is unrelated to his bid becomes less efficient than one in which the price may coincide with that bidder’s bid, when one admits that several bidders may coordinate (through ownership) their bids. The results add to a literature that favors more winner’s-bid pricing rules.

Properties of the Estimators for the Effective Bandwidth in a Generalized Markov Fluid Model

The Generalized Markov Fluid Model (GMFM), introduced in [1], is assumed for modeling sources in the network because it is versatile to describe the traffic fluctuations. In order to estimate resources allocations or in other words the channel occupation of each source, the concept of effective bandwidth proposed by Kelly [2] is used. In this paper, we present a formula for calculating the effective bandwidth, developed for the Generalized Markovian Flow model, which is of particular interest because it allows expressing said magnitude depending on the parameters of the model. We present unbiased estimators for these parameters that can be obtained from real data. The convergence and the consistency of the estimation are studied, and confidence bands are found. Illustrative calculation and performance of the proposed estimators were tested with simulated data and ideal results were obtained.

Assigning causality in drug-induced liver injury is challenging particularly when more than one drug could be responsible. We report a woman on long-term therapy with raloxifen who developed acute cholestasis shortly after starting fenofibrate. The picture evolved into chronic cholestasis. We hypothesized that an interaction at the metabolic level could have triggered the presentation of hepatotoxicity after a very short time of exposure to fenofibrate in this patient. The findings of an overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor in the liver biopsy suggest that angiogenesis might play a role in the persistance of toxic cholestasis.

The use of steel-making slag as catalysts for microwave-assisted dry reforming of CH4 was studied. Two carbon materials (an activated carbon and a metallurgical coke), mixtures of the carbon materials and Fe-rich slag, and mixtures of the carbon materials and Ni/Al2O3 were tested as catalysts. The mixtures of slag with carbons gave rise to higher and steadier conversions than those achieved over the carbon materials alone. In addition, the use of the metallurgical coke mixed with metal-rich catalysts gave rise to remarkable results. Thus, no CH4 and CO2 conversions were achieved when coke was used alone, whereas high conversions were obtained when it was mixed with the metal-rich catalysts.
