Nature-based coastal protection is increasingly recognised as a potentially sustainable and cost-effective solution to reduce coastal flood *** uses coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests to create resilient designs for coastal flood ***,to use mangroves effectively as a nature-based measure for flood risk reduction,we must understand the biophysical processes that govern risk reduction capacity through mangrove ecosystem size and *** this perspective,we evaluate the current state of knowledge on local physical drivers and ecological processes that determine mangrove functioning as part of a nature-based flood *** show that the forest properties that comprise coastal flood protection are well-known,but models cannot yet pinpoint how spatial heterogeneity of the forest structure affects the capacity for wave or surge ***,there is relatively good understanding of the ecological processes that drive forest structure and size,but there is a lack of knowledge on how daily bed-level dynamics link to long-term biogeomorphic forest dynamics,and on the role of combined stressors influencing forest *** simulation models of forest structure under changing physical(*** to sea-level change)and ecological drivers with hydrodynamic attenuation models will allow for better projections of long-term natural coastal protection.

Protective Effects of Lycopene on Furan-treated Diabetic and Non-diabetic Rat Lung

We assessed the effects of furan and lycopene on the histopathological and biochemical changes on lungs, body and lung weights, and food consumption of rats. Furan and diabetes caused histopathological changes, increment in malondialdehyde levels, and decrease in antioxidant enzyme activities. Lycopene showed a protective effect against these damages, except for glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase activities. Consequently, furan and diabetes resulted in lung toxicity. Our findings demonstrate that furan treatment resulted in more alterations in histology and biochemical parameters in diabetic rats and lycopene showed protective effects against these alterations.

Community batteries(CBs)are emerging to support and even enable energy communities and generally help consumers,especially space-constrained ones,to access potential techno-economic benefits from storage and support local grid ***,the economic viability of CB projects is often *** this regard,typical feasibility studies assess CB value for behind-the-meter(BTM)operation or whole-sale market participation,i.e.,front-of-meter(FOM).This work proposes a novel techno-economic operational framework that allows systematic assessment of the different options and introduces a two-meter architecture that co-optimizes both BTM and FOM benefits.A real CB project application in Australia is used to demonstrate the significant two-meter co-optimization opportunities that could enhance the business case of CB and energy communities by multi-service provision and value stacking.

Fully invertible hyperbolic neural networks for segmenting large-scale surface and sub-surface data

The large spatial/temporal/frequency scale of geoscience and remote-sensing datasets causes memory issues when using convolutional neural networks for(sub-)surface data *** developed fully reversible or fully invertible networks can mostly avoid memory limitations by recomputing the states during the backward pass through the *** results in a low and fixed memory requirement for storing network states,as opposed to the typical linear memory growth with network *** work focuses on a fully invertible network based on the telegraph *** reversibility saves the major amount of memory used in deep networks by the data,the convolutional kernels can take up most memory if fully invertible networks contain multiple invertible pooling/coarsening *** address the explosion of the number of convolutional kernels by combining fully invertible networks with layers that contain the convolutional kernels in a compressed form directly.A second challenge is that invertible networks output a tensor the same size as its *** property prevents the straightforward application of invertible networks to applications that map between different input-output dimensions,need to map to outputs with more channels than present in the input data,or desire outputs that decrease/increase the resolution compared to the input ***,we show that by employing invertible networks in a non-standard fashion,we can still use them for these *** in hyperspectral land-use classification,airborne geophysical surveying,and seismic imaging illustrate that we can input large data volumes in one chunk and do not need to work on small patches,use dimensionality reduction,or employ methods that classify a patch to a single central pixel.

Crohn's disease, fatigue, and infiiximab: Is there a role for cytokines in the pathogenesis of fatigue?

AIM: To study the effect of infliximab on fatigue in relation to cytokine levels in Crohn's disease (CD) patients. METHODS: Fourteen CD patients were blinded for treatment and received placebo at baseline, and infliximab 2 wk later, with a follow-up of 4 wk. Blood samples were drawn on a regular basis, and questionnaires on fatigue, depression, quality of life, and clinical disease activity were completed at regular intervals. RESULTS: After placebo infusion, fatigue scores decreased within 3 d (3.5 points±1.1, P≤0.01), but returned to baseline values 14 d after this infusion. The drop of fatigue scores following infliximab infusion sustained until the end of the study (3.8 points±1.4, P≤0.05). Quality of life was increased at the end of the study compared to baseline values (138.6±9.4 vs 179.4±6.7; P≤0.005), whereas depression scores were decreased (20.4±9.4 vs 11.3±2.2; P≤0.01). No correlation between the severity of fatigue and the level of cytokines was observed. CONCLUSION: The reduction of fatigue after infliximab infusion is subjective to a placebo effect. The effect of infliximab on fatigue, however, persists while the placebo effect disappears after a short period of time. A clear role of cytokines could not be substantiated.

目的:吸力式基础具有投资费用低、施工时间短、无噪音和可重复使用等优点,因此被广泛应用在海洋工程领域。本文针对吸力式基础设计中的关键问题,主要综述现有设计理论,指出理论缺陷,并给出设计建议。创新点:综述砂土、粘土和成层土中吸力式基础的安装、回收、基础承载力、基础沉降和服役性能中的关键科学问题和现有设计理论。方法:1.基于文献报道的现场试验和模型试验,针对吸力式基础安装过程中的沉贯阻力、临界吸力和土塞效应,评估现有设计理论的准确性;2.分析粘土和砂土中吸力式基础的完全排水、完全不排水和部分排水条件下静力和循环承载力计算理论;3.针对吸力式基础的长期服役性能,分析荷载引起的基础变形、固结沉降、循环再固结沉降和极端荷载下的"棘轮效应"。结论:1.现有的吸力式基础安装中沉贯阻力计算理论没有普适性;对于临界吸力的计算,由于没有考虑"土拱效应",理论计算值均低估了安装吸力。2.对于粘土中吸力式基础承载力的计算需要考虑循环作用下土体的强度弱化和基础-土间空隙引起的承载力降低,而砂土中基础承载力计算需要考虑排水条件的影响。3.对于吸力式基础的长期服役性能,特别是基础变形的计算,目前还缺少成熟的计算理论。
