CFB cyclones at high temperature:Operational results and design assessment

Pressure drop and cut size measurements are reported for a full scale cyclone operating within a 58 MWth CFB-combustor unit at 775 ℃. The paper reviews the vast number of equations to calculate the pressure drop and separation efficiency of cyclones, generally for operation at ambient temperature and at low Cs [〈0.5]. None of the literature correlations predicts the pressure drop with a fair accuracy within the range of experimental operating conditions. The cut size d50 can be estimated using direct empirical methods or using the Stokes number, Stk50. Both methods were used to compare measured and predicted values of d50. With the exception of Muschelknautz and Krambrock, none of the equations made accurate predictions. Finally, an alternative method to determine the friction factor of the pressure drop equation （Euler number, Eu） and of the cut size is proposed. The Eu number is determined from the geometry of common cyclones, and the derived value of Stk50 defines more accurate cut sizes. The remaining discrepancy of less than 5%, when compared with the measured values, is tentatively explained in terms of a reduced cyclone diameter due to the solids layer formed near its wall. Further measurements, mostly using positron emission particle tracking, elucidate the particle motion in the cyclone and both tracking results and the influence of the particle movement on Eu and Stk50 will be discussed in a follow-up paper.

Spinal cord injury has devastating consequences because adult central nervous system （CNS） neurons do not regenerate their axons after injury. Two key reasons for axon regeneration fail- ure are extrinsic inhibitory factors and a low intrinsic capacity for axon regrowth. Research has therefore focused on overcom- ing extrinsic growth inhibition, and enhancing intrinsic regeneration capacity. Both of these issues will need to be addressed to enable optimal repair of the injured sp＋inal cord.

Numerical analysis of hydroabrasion in a hydrocyclone

The velocity profiles and separation efficiency curves of a hydrocyclone were predicted by an Euler-Euler approach using a computational fluid dynamics tool ANSYS-CFX 14.5. The Euler-Euler approach is capable of considering the particle-particle interactions and is appropriate for highly laden liquid-solid mixtures. Pre- dicted results were compared and validated with experi- mental results and showed a considerably good agreement. An increase in the particle cut size with increasing solid concentration of the inlet mixture flow was observed and discussed. In addition to this, the erosion on hydrocyclone walls constructed from stainless steel 410, eroded by sand particles （mainly SiOz）, was predicted with the Euler-La- grange approach. In this approach, the abrasive solid particles were traced in a Lagrangian reference frame as discrete particles. The increases in the input flow velocity, solid concentration, and the particle size have increased the erosion at the upper part of the cylindrical body of the hydrocyclone, where the tangential inlet flow enters the hydrocyclone. The erosion density in the area between the cylindrical to conical body area, in comparison to other parts of the hydrocyclone, also increased considerably. Moreover, it was observed that an increase in the particle shape factor from 0.1 to 1.0 leads to a decrease of almost 70 % in the average erosion density of the hydrocyclone wall surfaces.

Haplotype of prostaglandin synthase 2/cyclooxygenase 2 is involved in the susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease

AIM： Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 （PTGS2 or COX2） is one of the key factors in the cellular response to inflammation. PTGS2 is expressed in the affected intestinal segments of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases （IBD）. In IBD patients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which have been shown to reduce both the production and activity of PTGS2, may activate IBD and aggravate the symptoms. We aimed at examining genetic variants of PTGS2 that may be risk factors for IBD. METHODS： We genotyped 291 individuals diagnosed with IBD and 367 controls from the Dutch population for the five most frequent polymorphisms of the PTG52 gene. Clinical data were collected on all patients. DNA was extracted via normal laboratory methods. Genotyping was carried out using multiplex PCR followed by the Invader Assay and the 5＇ exonuclease assay （TaqMan）. New polymorphism screening was performed by pre-screening with denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography, followed by fluorescent sequencing. RESULTS： Allele 5209G was weakly associated with Crohn＇s disease （odds ratio [OR] 1.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-2.57）, and allele 8473T with ulcerativecolitis （OR 1.50, 95%CI 1.00-2.27）. The haplotype including both alleles showed a strong association with IBD （OR 13.15, 95%CI 3.17-116.15）. This haplotype, while rare （-0.3%） in the general population, is found more frequently in patients （3.5%）. CONCLUSION： Our data suggest that this haplotype of PTGS2 contributes to the susceptibility of IBD.

From Single Droplet to Column design

The technique state to design counter-current extraction columns is based on the performance of pilot plant experiments. The modelling is then either with the equilibrium or dispersion model, whereas in the latter the dispersion coefficient accounts for all hydrodynamic non-idealities. A new approach uses single droplet experiments to obtain the basic laws and functions governing droplet breakage, coalescence, relative velocity, and axial dispersion when using droplet populance balance models （DPBM）. The hydrodynamics simulation results show that the mean Sauter diameter, hold-up, and concentration profiles could be well predicted, which promotes the use of DPBM models for further applications in industrial scale.

Puppyhood is a very active social and vocal period in a harbor seal's life Ph oca vitulina. An important feature of vocalizations is their temporal and rhythmic structure, and understanding vocal timing and rhythms in harbor seals is critical to a cross-species hypothesis in evolutionary neuroscience that links vocal learning, rhythm perception, and synchronization. This study utilized analytical techniques that may best capture rhythmic structure in pup vocalizations with the goal of examining whether (1) harbor seal pups show rhythmic structure in their calls and (2) rhythms evolve over time. Calls of 3 wild-born seal pups were recorded daily over the course of 1-3 weeks;3 temporal features were analyzed using 3 complementary techniques. We identified temporal and rhythmic structure in pup calls across different time windows. The calls of harbor seal pups exhibit some degree of temporal and rhythmic organization, which evolves over puppyhood and resembles that of other species' in teractive comm un icati on. We suggest n ext steps for investigating call structure in harbor seal pups and propose comparative hypotheses to test in other pinniped species.
