Comparative studies on fouling of homogeneous anion exchange membranes by different structured organics in electrodialysis

Five negatively charged organic compounds with different structures, sodium methane sulfonate(MS), sodium benzene sulfonate(BS), sodium 6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulfonate(NSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS), were used to examine the fouling of an anion exchange membrane(AEM) in electrodialysis(ED),to explore the effect of molecular characteristics on the fouling behavior on the AEM and changes in the surface and electrochemical properties of the AEM. Results indicated that the fouling degree of the AEM by the different organics followed the order:SDBS > SDS > NSS > BS > MS. SDBS and SDS formed a dense fouling layer on the surface of the AEM, which was the main factor in the much more severe membrane fouling, and completely restricted the transmembrane ion migration. The other three organics caused fouling of the AEM by adsorption on the surface and/or accumulation in the interlayer of the AEM, and exhibited almost no influence on the transmembrane ion migration. It was also concluded that the organics with benzene rings caused more severe fouling of the AEM due to the stronger affinity interaction and steric effect between the organics and the AEM compared with organics with aliphatic chains.

This paper evaluates the adsorption capacity of chemically sugarcane bagasses with sodium hydroxide(SHS),citric acid(CAS),tartaric acid(TAS)and unmodified sugarcane bagasse(SB)for cadmium adsorption in water *** results prove adsorption capacity for Cd(II)increases after chemical modification and the adsorption fits perfectly with the Langmuir *** had the highest maximum adsorption capacity of 45.45 mg/g followed by TAS with 38.46 mg/g and SHS with 29.41 at optimum pH 5.0 and 120 minutes equilibrium time while 1 g SB removed 18.8 mg Cd(II)in the same *** kinetics study of the process followed a pseudo-secondorder rate expression,that indicated a strong interaction between the biosorbents and *** sugarcane bagasse and modified sugarcane bagasse were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)*** chemical modification was confirmed by the presence of carboxyl and esters groups created at 1,738 *** estimation of acid groups in modified materials shows the enhancement of this group after *** the other hand,desorption studies showed the high leaching of cadmium ion from the biosorbent leading to the efficient reutilization of materials.

Discharged hospital wastewater contains various pathogenic microorganisms,antibiotic groups,toxic organic compounds,radioactive elements,and ionic *** contaminants harm the environment and human health causing the spread of ***,effective treatment of hospital wastewater is an urgent task for sustainable ***,with controllable porous and nonporous structures,have been rapidly developed for molecular *** particular,membrane bioreactor(MBR)technology demonstrated high removal efficiency toward organic compounds and low waste sludge *** further enhance the separation efficiency and achieve material recovery from hospital waste streams,novel concepts of MBRs and their applications are rapidly evolved through hybridizing novel membranes(non hydrophilic ultrafiltration/microfiltration)into the MBR units(hybrid MBRs)or the MBR as a pretreatment step and integrating other membrane processes as subsequent secondary purification step(integrated MBR-membrane systems).However,there is a lack of reviews on the latest advancement in MBR technologies for hospital wastewater treatment,and analysis on its major challenges and future *** review started with an overview of main pollutants in common hospital wastewater,followed by an understanding on the key performance indicators/criteria in MBR membranes(i.e.,solute selectivity)and processes(e.g.,fouling).Then,an in-depth analysis was provided into the recent development of hybrid MBR and integrated MBR-membrane system concepts,and applications correlated with wastewater sources,with a particular focus on hospital *** is anticipated that this review will shed light on the knowledge gaps in the field,highlighting the potential contribution of hybrid MBRs and integrated MBRmembrane systems toward global epidemic prevention.

The presence of pesticides in the environment is of great concern due to their persistent nature and chronic adverse effect on human health and the environment. Water bodies are subject to pollution by organochlorine pesticides, especially in developing countries, where water pollution is a key sustainability challenge. Hence, activated carbon is considered a universal adsorbent for the removal of organochlorine pollutants from water. Activated carbon from Acatia etbaica was prepared using traditional kilns with low investment costs. Pesticides such as aldrin, dieldrin and DDT were selected for adsorption because of their common usage in agricultural and malaria control activities and may occur in high concentrations in surface waters that are used as drinking water sources. The effect of the adsorbent dose and initial concentration were investigated. To describe the equilibrium isotherms the experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Freundlich model gave the best correlation with the experimental data. Activated carbon prepared from Acacia etbaica was found to be an effective and low-cost alternative for the removal of organochlorine pesticides from aqueous solutions. The preparation method allows the use of this material by local communities for effective remediation of pollution by pesticides.

This study focuses on determining the toxicological risks of urban waste from the city of Uvira, discharged into Lake Tanganyika, on the surrounding population. Volatile organic compounds were measured in a variety of solid waste matrices, including inorganic micropollutants in wastewater and fish. The concentrations of Hg and Pb in the lake were found to be 1.21 and 1.42 μg/L respectively and between 0.83 to 18.36 μg/L of Hg and 8.25 to 670 μg/L of Pb, at the collector outlet. The presence of trace metallic elements, such as Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sb, Hg and Pb, were detected at high concentrations compared to the WHO standard. An ecotoxicology experiment herein on wastewater samples showed lethal pollutant concentrations of the order of 0.0055 mL/mL which killed at least 50% of fish (LC50), confirming the toxicity of the wastewater. These potentially harmful effluents also contain volatile organic compounds originating in high concentration from the pharmaceutical discharges of the general Uvira hospital, in particular: toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene/p-xylene, o-xylene and chloroform in higher concentrations compared to the norm. Other components such as benzene, bromodichloroethane and 1,1-dichloroethane were found to be present, but at a concentration below 0.05 ppb. A variety of trace organics can be suspected to be present as well.

Percutaneous resection of upper tract urothelial cell carcinoma:When,how,and is it safe?

Introduction:In the management of upper tract urothelial cell carcinoma(UTUC)endoscopic,nephron sparing procedures like ureterorenoscopy(URS)or percutaneous tumour resection(PCTR)still play a very limited *** could lead to possible unnecessary radical nephroureterectomies(RNU),still being the gold standard *** risk of chronic kidney disease(CKD)later in life is *** this study we present the results of 24-year experience with PCTR in a single ***:We identified 44 patients who underwent PCTR between 1992 and *** resection was achieved in 40 patients who were included in this *** and clinical data,including tumour recurrence,progression to RNU,tumour grade and overall survival(OS)were retrospectively *** outcome analysis was ***:Median age at diagnosis was 68 years(range 42-94 years).Low grade tumours were found in 37 patients(92.5%)and high grade tumours in three patients(7.5%).Median followup was 53 months during which 20 patients developed upper tract recurrences(50.0%).The longest time to recurrence was 97 *** follow-up 11 patients(27.5%)underwent an RNU and two patients died from *** could be avoided in 29 patients(72.5%).In this study we found that multifocality is a significant risk factor for recurrence,but not for stage progression to ***:PCTR is a surgically and oncologically safe *** preservation in patients with UTUC who are eligible for percutaneous resection can be achieved in the majority of *** criteria for PCTR should be further refined,leading to a wider application of PCTR in the ***-up needs invasive procedures and should be long term.

To evaluate brain involvement in quiescent Crohn’s disease (CD) patients with fatigue using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).METHODSMultiple MRI techniques were used to assess cerebral changes in 20 quiescent CD patients with fatigue (defined with at least 6 points out of an 11-point numeric rating scale compared with 17 healthy age and gender matched controls without fatigue. Furthermore, mental status was assessed by cognitive functioning, based on the neuropsychological inventory including the different domains global cognitive functioning, memory and executive functioning and in addition mood and quality of life scores. Cognitive functioning and mood status were correlated with MRI findings in the both study *** glutamate + glutamine (Glx = Glu + Gln) concentrations (P = 0.02) and ratios to total creatine (P = 0.02) were found in CD patients compared with controls. Significant increased Cerebral Blood Flow (P = 0.05) was found in CD patients (53.08 ± 6.14 mL/100 g/min) compared with controls (47.60 ± 8.62 mL/100 g/min). CD patients encountered significantly more depressive symptoms (P 1-weighted analysis. In addition, no correlation was found between mental status and MRI *** work shows evidence for perfusion, neurochemical and mental differences in the brain of CD patients with fatigue compared with healthy controls.

Surface-functionalized nitrogen/carbon co-doped polymorphic TiO_(2) phase junction nanoparticles uniformly distributed in porous carbon matrix were synthesized by a simple one-step pyrolysis of titanium based metal-organic framework(MOF),NH_(2)-MIL^(-1)25(Ti) at 700℃ under water vapour *** water vapour during the pyrolysis of NH_(2)-MIL^(-1)25(Ti) not only functionalizes the derived porous carbon matrix with carboxyl groups but also forms additional oxygen-rich N like interstitial/intraband states lying above the valence band of TiO2 along with the self-doped carbo n,which further narrows the energy band gaps of polymorphic TiO2 nanoparticles that enhance photocatalytic charge transfer *** co-catalyst,sample N-C-TiO2/CArW demonstrates H_(2) evolution activity of 426 μmol gcat-1h^(-1),which remarkably outperforms commercial TiO_(2)(P-25) and N-C-TiO_(2)/CAr with a 5-fold and 3-fold H_(2) generation,*** study clearly shows that water vapour atmosphere during the pyrolysis increases the hydrophilicity of the Ti-MOF derived composites by functionalizing porous carbon matrix with carboxylic groups,as well as enhancing the electrical conductivity and charge transfer efficiency due to the formation of additional localized oxygen-rich N like interstitial/intraband *** work also demonstrates that by optimizing the anatase-rutile phase composition of the TiO2 polymorphs,tuning the energy band gaps by N/C co-doping and functionalizing the porous carbon matrix in the N-C-TiO2/C nanocomposites,the photocatalytic H_(2) generation activity can be further enhanced.

Electrochemically-stimulated nanoscale mechanochemical wear of silicon

Mechanochemical reactions at the sliding interface between a single-crystalline silicon(Si)wafer and a silica(SiO2)microsphere were studied in three environmental conditions:humid air,potassium chloride(KCl)solution,and KCl solution with an applied *** to that from humid air,mechanochemical material removal from the silicon surface increased substantially in the KCl-immersed condition,and further increased when electrochemistry was introduced into the tribological *** measuring the load dependence of the material removal rate and analyzing the results using a mechanically assisted Arrhenius-type kinetic model,the activation energy(E_(a))and the mechanical energy(E_(m)),by which this energy is reduced by mechanical activation,were compared qualitatively under different environmental *** the KCl-immersed condition,mechanochemistry may decrease the required effective energy of reactions(E_(eff)=E_(a)−E_(m))and promote material removal mainly through improved catalysis of the mechanochemical reactions facilitated by greater availability of water molecules compared to the humid air ***,the effectiveness of the mechanochemistry is *** the electrochemical condition,electrochemically-accelerated oxidation of the silicon surface was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)*** results strongly suggest that electrochemistry further stimulates mechanochemical reactions primarily by increasing the initial energy state of the surface via the facilitated formation of interfacial bonding bridges,i.e.,a surface oxidation/hydroxylation process.
