The growth of Fe nanoclusters oN the Ge（001） surface has been studied using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy （STM） and density functional theory （DFT） calculations. STM results indicate that Fe nucleates on the Ge（001） surface, forming well-ordered nanoclusters of uniform size. Depending on the preparation conditions, two types of nanoclusters were observed having either four or sixteen Fe atoms within a nanocluster. The results were confirmed by DFT calculations. Annealing the nanoclusters at 420 K leads to the formation of nanorow structures, due to cluster mobility at such temperature. The Fe nanoclusters and nanorow structures formed on the Ge（001） surface show a superparamagnetic behaviour as measured by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism.

Background： During nutritional stress, reduced intake may reduce the efficacy of anabolic implants. This study was conducted to evaluate basic cellular responses to a growth promotant implant at two intake levels. Methods： Sixteen crossbred steers （293 ± 19.3 kg） were used to evaluate the impact of anabolic implants in either an adequate or a restricted nutritional state. Steers were trained to individual Calan gates, and then randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Treatments consisted off presence or absence of an anabolic growth implant （Revalor-XS, 200 mg TBA and 40 mg estradiol; IMPLANT or CONTROL） and a moderate energy, pelleted, starting cattle diet fed at either 2.0 × or 1.0 × maintenance energy （NEM） requirements （HIGH or LOW）. Serum （d O, 14, and 28） was used for application to bovine muscle satellite cells. After treatment with the serum （20% of total media） from the trial cattle, the satellite cells were incubated for 72 h. Protein abundance of myosin heavy chain （MHC）, phosphorylated extracellular signal-related kinase （phospho-ERK）, and phosphorylated mammalian target of rapamycin （phospho-mTOR） were analyzed to determine the effects of implant, intake, and their interaction （applied via the serum）. Results： Intake had no effect on MHC （P = 0.85） but IMPLANT increased （P 〈 0.01） MHC abundance vs. CONTROL. Implant status, intake status, and the interaction had no effect on the abundance of phospho-ERK （P〉0.23）. Implanting increased phospho-mTOR （P 〈 0.01） but there was no effect （P 〉 0.51） of intake or intake x implant. Conclusions： The nearly complete lack of interaction between implant and nutritional status indicates that the signaling molecules measured herein respond to implants and nutritional status independently. Furthermore, results suggest that the muscle hypertrophic effects of anabolic implants may not be mediated by circulating IGF-1.

AIM To investigate the hepatic microcirculatory changes due to Haemoxygenase(HO),effect of HO inhibition on remote ischemic preconditioning(RIPC) and modulation of *** Eight groups of animals were studied- Sham,ischemia reperfusion injury(IRI) the animals were subjected to 45 min of hepatic ischemia followed by three hours of reperfusion,RIPC(remote ischemic preconditioning) + IRI group,remote ischemic preconditioning in sham(RIPC + Sham),PDTC + IR(Pyridodithiocarbamate,HO donor),Zn PP + RIPC + IRI(Zinc protoporphyrin prior to preconditioning),IR-24(45 min of ischemia followed by 24 h of reperfusion),RIPC+IR-24(preconditioning prior to. After 3 and 24 h of reperfusion the animals were killed by exsanguination and samples were taken. RESULTS Velocity of flow(160.83 ± 12.24 μm/s),sinusoidal flow(8.42 ± 1.19) and sinusoidal perfusion index(42.12 ± 7.28) in hepatic IR were lower(P < 0.05) in comparison to RIPC and PDTC(HO inducer). RIPC increased velocity of flow(328.04 ± 19.13 μm/s),sinusoidal flow(17.75 ± 2.59) and the sinusoidal perfusion index(67.28 ± 1.82)(P < 0.05). PDTC(HO induction) reproduced the effects of RIPC in hepatic IR. PDTC restored RBC velocity(300.88 ± 22.109 μm/s),sinusoidal flow(17.66 ± 3.71) and sinusoidal perfusion(82.33 ± 3.5) to near sham levels. Zn PP(HO inhibition) reduced velocity of flow of RBC in the RIPC group(170.74 ± 13.43 μm/s and sinusoidal flow in the RIPC group(9.46 ± 1.34). Zn PP in RIPC(60.29 ± 1.82) showed a fall in perfusion only at 180 min of reperfusion. Neutrophil adhesion in IR injury is seen in both postsinusoidal venules(769.05 ± 87.48) and sinusoids(97.4 ± 7.49). Neutrophil adhesion in RIPC + IR injury is reduced in both postsinusoidal venules(219.66 ± 93.79) and sinusoids(25.69 ± 9.08)(P < 0.05). PDTC reduced neutrophil adhesion in both postsinusoidal venules(89.58 ± 58.32) and sinusoids(17.98 ± 11.01)(P < 0.05) reproducing the effects of RIPC. Cachexia affects the majority of patients with advanced cancer. It leads to poor surgical and oncological outcomes, and negatively affects quality of life. It has long been reported that components of the host immune system, including pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1α, IL-6, TNF-α and INF-g, participate in the syndrome of cachexia. Yet therapeutic targeting of these pro-inflammatory factors has not yielded meaningful improvements in cachexia management. More recently, the impact of immune cells in the tumour mass (tumour-associated macrophages) and host circulation (myeloid suppressor cells) has garnered much interest with regards to their role in immune tolerance in cancer. However, their role in the generation of systemic inflammation and cancer cachexia is underexplored and outstanding questions remain. This review summarises the key mediators and targets of immune dysfunction in cancer cachexia. Here we describe the host response including skeletal muscle wasting;highlight the current knowledge gap areas;and report the results of previously trialled immunotherapies. A greater understanding of complex interaction between the tumour, immune system and peripheral tissues in the genesis and maintenance of cancer cachexia is a key step in n identifying future therapeutic targets.

Weight gain occurs in the majority of women following breast cancer treatment. An overview of studies describing weight gain amongst women treated with early to modern chemotherapy regimens is included. Populations at higher risk include women who are younger, closer to ideal body weight and who have been treated with chemotherapy. Weight gain ranges between 1 to 5 kg, and may be associated with change in body composition with gain in fat mass and loss in lean body mass. Women are unlikely to return to pre-diagnosis weight. Possible mechanisms including inactivity and metabolic changes are explored. Potential interventions are reviewed including exercise, dietary changes andpharmacologic agents. Although breast cancer prognosis does not appear to be significantly impacted, weight gain has negative consequences on quality of life and overall health. Future studies should explore change in body composition, metabolism and insulin resistance. Avoiding weight gain in breast cancer survivors following initial diagnosis and treatment should be encouraged.
