Croplands are decreasing due to the expansion of urban areas into rural communities and to some extent due to sand accumulations. Increases in population numbers, new development, in addition to the accumulation of sand and soil salinity are the major driving force leading to abandonment and shrinking of cropland. The aim of this study was to investigate and assess to what extent agricultural lands are affected by urban development in the Al Hassa oasis, Eastern region in Saudi Arabia by employing Landsat time series data of years 1988, 2000 and 2017 as the main source of information. A set of ground truth, control points (GCPs) was also used besides population census data. Unsupervised classifications approach, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and change detection methods were used here. Urban area during 2000-2017 exhibits much higher increase compared to 1988-2000, while the arable lands declined to −3.4% in 1988-2000 and increased to 22% during 2000-2017. The data analysis results provided new accurate numerical information supported by a graphical representation in regard to the decrease and increase in urban and agricultural lands. Therefore the findings of this study should be considered by decision maker for improving and development the agriculture activities in rural and urban communities.

Aim: To investigate depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia levels among Sudanese citizens after a year has passed since the start of Armed Forces conflict in Sudan. Methods: An online survey was distributed. It is composed of five parts, covering the following areas: 1) sociodemographic data;2) depression assessment;3) generalized anxiety disorder assessment;4) post-traumatic stress disorder assessment;and 5) insomnia assessment. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27 was used for data analysis;frequency and percentage were used to describe the qualitative variables. Spearman’s correlation analysis and Chi-square test were used for correlation and association analysis;a P-value equal to or less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study included 283 participants, primarily female (76.0%), with a mean age of 35.26 ± 6.96 years. The majority of participants were married (50.5%) and had a university level of education (50.2%). At the start of the war, 70.3% of participants were inside the war zones, and at the time of data collection, 73.5% were outside Sudan. The length of stay in the war zone ranged from 1 to 300 days, with a mean of 48.59 ± 70.284 days. Additionally, 63.3% of participants stated that they did not receive any form of mental health intervention, and the remaining did not provide an answer. There was a high prevalence of moderate-severe depression (50.5%), moderate anxiety (35.3%), PTSD (56.5%), and sub-threshold insomnia (53.4%) among the participants. Correlation analyses revealed associations between demographic factors such as sex, age, marital status, and education and mental health issues. Notably, female participants showed a higher prevalence of PTSD (53.0%) compared to male participants (67.6%). Conclusions: There is a substantial impact of war-related trauma on mental health, revealing a high prevalence of moderate-severe depression, moderate anxiety, PTSD, and sub-threshold insomnia among the particip

The complex beads of carboxymethyl cellulose（CMC） and chitosan（CHI） that are fabricated by interfacial complexation have a core-shell structure composed of a thin skin layer and a 3D entangled internal structure,which endows the beads with adsorption possibilities toward anionic and cationic molecules via electrostatic ***,the loading and releasing behavior of such a system is essential and fundamental for their application yet has not been studied *** this work,the influences of beads physical state,adsorbent dosage,agitation speed,solution pH and temperature on the loading behavior were *** CMC@CHI beads demonstrated different loading efficiency to three typical dyes of methylene blue（MB）,acid blue-113（AB）,and methyl orange（MO） with different charge *** adsorption rate followed an order of MB>AB>MO,giving 97.4%,73.3% and 20.2%,*** releasing of three dyes from CMC@CHI beads also exhibited different rates,and MB release was found to be prolonged compared to AB and *** loading mechanism of dyes was further investigated via X-ray photoelectron *** CMC@CHI beads may have possible applications in mixed dye removal as well as encapsulating systems of drugs or sensitive chemicals with different charges.

Background: Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) SARS-CoV-2 assay remains the common test used to detect the coronavirus infection worldwide. Complete blood count (CBC) is a rapid and cost-effective test compared to RT-PCR, thus, it would be worthy to find a hematological indicator for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Objectives: This study aims to assess the efficacy of CBC indices as an initial diagnostic test for coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection, which might be helpful during the outbreak of the disease. Materials and Methods: A retrospective, hospital based and case control study was carried out at Gezira isolation center for COVID-19, Gezira State, Sudan in the period from January to May 2021. A total of 178 COVID-19 patients with positive RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 assay result and another 178 volunteers of apparently healthy people were included in this study. CBC as well as D-dimer and C-reactive protein (CRP) were recorded from patient’s file and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) were calculated. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20. Results: Neutrophil percentage, total white blood cells (TWBCs) and platelet (PLT) were higher in the COVID-19 patients compared to their control, whereas, lymphocyte and monocyte showed lower percentages among the COVID-19 patients. Although the differences that observed in the means of PLT, neutrophils and monocytes between the case and control group were significant, all these mean values of both groups were lying within the normal range. On the other hand, there was a highly significant elevation in NLR and PLR and quite good increasing in LMR level among COVID-19 patients compared to their control. The results of receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that the area under the curve of NLR, PLR and LMR were 0.948 (P. value = 0.00, 95% CI: 0.925 - 0.972), 0.925 (P. value = 0.00

Objective: To explore the potential of essential oil, as therapeutic molecule source, from olibanum of Boswellia papyrifera(Burseraceae), leafy stems of Cymbopogon schoenanthus(Poaceae) and Croton zambesicus(Euphorbiaceae) and rhizome of Cyperus rotundus(Cyperaceae) found in Sudan. Respective essential oil was evaluated for antiproliferative, antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Methods: Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and then analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry(GCMS). Anti-proliferative activity was determined against human cell lines(MCF7 and MDAMB231, HT29 and HCT116) by the thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide(MTT) procedure. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by diphenyl 2 pycril hydrazil(DPPH) assay. Antibacterial activity was determined against two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria by microdilution method. Results: The essential oil from olibanum of Boswellia papyriferacontained mainly alcohol and ester derivatives(46.82%) while monoterpenes(69.84%) dominated in Corton zambesicus oil. Sesquiterpenes were the most highly represented classes of terpene derivatives in Cyperus schoenanthus(71.59%) and Cyperus rotundus(44.26%). Oil of Cymbopogon schoenanthus revealed the best anti-proliferative activity against HCT116 cell line with IC50 value at(19.1 ± 2.0) μg/m L. Oil of Croton zambesicus showed the best antioxidant activity [EC50(4.20 ± 0.19) mg/m L]. All oils showed good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) value ranged from 16 to 250 μg/m L. Conclusions: The results suggest that the essential oils of these plants could be used as a source of natural anti-proliferative, antioxidant and antibacterial agents.

Objective:To determine and compare anti-schistosoma IgC,interleukin-10(IL-10) and interferon-γ(IFN-γ)levels in the serum of patients and endemic controls and to investigate the epidemiological situation of Al-Hebaika village in the northern part of Gezira Agricultural Irrigation Scheme in ***:During 2005 survey,serum were collected from 118 *** eight were parasitological positive(patients),and 50 were negative(endemic controls).Indirect ELISA was used to measure and compare the levels of immunoglobulin C(IgC) against Schistsoma mansoni(***) soluble worm antigen(SWA) in the patients and endemic control groups from the village and compared with 20 healthy non endemic *** ELJSA was also used to measure and compare IL-10 and IFN-γin the serum of the selected ***:The overall prevalence of *** was 20.0%and 0.9%in the first and the second surveys respectively,while the intensity of infection was the same in the two surveys 1.38[geometric mean egg count(GMFC)].The overall prevalence of *** infection was 68.5% and 15.4%,while the intensity of infection was 2.75(GMEC) and 1.70(GMEC) in the two surveys *** reactivity against SWA showed no significant difference between Schistosoma positive patients and endemic ***,there were high significant differences between each of these two groups and the non endemic control group(P= 0,000).Schistosoma patients and exposed controls had significantly higher IL-10 concentration compared with non endemic *** endemic controls showed significantly higher IFN-γconcentration than patients(P = 0.000).Also there was very significant difference between IFN-γlevels of each of patients endemic controls and that of the non endemic controls(P = 0.003).Conclusions:The study concluded that IFN-γhas a role in the natural resistant to schistosoma mansoni infection. Petermann Glacier is a marine-terminating outlet glacier that had a 70 km-long floating ice tongue prior to a～270 km2calving event that was observed from satellite sensors in August 2010,shortening the ice tongue by～27 ***,in July 2012,another 10 km was lost through *** order to understand these events in perspective,here the authors perform a long-term data analysis of Petermann Glacier calving-front variability and ice velocity for each year in the 1990s–2000s,supplemented by available observations from the previous three *** major(on the order of 100 km2)calving events are identified,with～153 km2calved from1959 to 1961,～168 km2in 1991,～71 km2in 2001,～270 km2in 2010,and～130 km2in 2012—as well as～31km2calved in *** increased frequency of major calving events in recent years has left the front terminus position retreated nearly 25 km beyond the range of observed in previous *** contrast,stable ice-dynamics are suggested from ice-velocity measurements made each year between 1993–2012,which are on average1063 m yr–1,with limited interannual variability and no significant trend;moreover,there is no apparent relationship between ice-velocity variability and calving *** degree to which the massive calving events in 2010and 2012 represent natural episodic variability or a response to atmospheric and/or oceanic changes remains speculative;however,melt-induced weakening of the floating ice tongue in recent years is strongly suggested.
