3D-printed scaffolds with 2D hetero-nanostructures and immunomodulatory cytokines provide pro-healing microenvironment for enhanced bone regeneration

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is driving forward the progresses of various engineering fields, including tissue engineering. However, the pristine 3D-printed scaffolds usually lack robust functions in stimulating desired activity for varied regeneration applications. In this study, we combined the two-dimensional (2D) hetero-nanostructures and immuno-regulative interleukin-4 (IL-4) cytokines for the functionalization of 3D-printed scaffolds to achieve a pro-healing immuno-microenvironment for optimized bone injury repair. The 2D hetero-nanostructure consists of graphene oxide (GO) layers, for improved cell adhesion, and black phosphorous (BP) nanosheets, for the continuous release of phosphate ions to stimulate cell growth and osteogenesis. In addition, the 2D hetero-nanolayers facilitated the adsorption of large content of immuno-regulative IL-4 cytokines, which modulated the polarization of macrophages into M2 phenotype. After in vivo implantation in rat, the immuno-functioned 3D-scaffolds achieved in vivo osteo-immunomodulation by building a pro-healing immunological microenvironment for better angiogenesis and osteogenesis in the defect area and thus facilitated bone regeneration. These results demonstrated that the immuno-functionalization of 3D-scaffolds with 2D hetero-nanostructures with secondary loading of immuno-regulative cytokines is an encouraging strategy for improving bone regeneration.

Spin Hydrodynamic Power Generation and Its Influence on Magnetohydrodynamic Effects

This paper reports on generation of electric power using Spin Hydrodynamics (SHD) and its impact on magneto hydrodynamics (MHD). The targeted system uses saltwater as conducting fluid in a channel that is equipped with high energy permanent magnets in that the direction of magnetic field is perpendicular to that of the working fluid. By measuring the induced voltage caused by turbulent motion of conducting fluid (with and without magnetic field) the relationship between the SHD and MHD has been investigated. This system has been further simulated and experimentally verified to validate the claims.

Modeling of two-phase particulate flows in a confined jet with a focus on two-way coupling

A computational fluid dynamics model is used for the simulation of laminar flow ofwater-Al2O3 nanofluid in a confined slot impinging jet. The （steady-state and two-dimensional） Eulerian-Lagrangian model is used considering fluid-particle and particle-wall interactions （i.e., two-way coupling）. A collocated grid and the SIMPLE algorithm are used for the coupling of pressure and velocity fields. The deposition model is used to investigate the effect of particle deposition on the impingement surface. Results indicate that the particle trajectory becomes stable farther from the jet with a rising Reynolds number and jet- impingement surface distance ratio. The heat transfer coefficient of the mixture model is higher than that of the Eulerian-Lagrangican model.

Bacteriophages （phages） are viruses that infect bacterial cells and hijack the metabolism of the host cells for replication and amplification of their genetic information. These bacterial viruses are known to be the most numerous life forms on earth. Recent metagenomic analyses have revealed the vast untapped diversity of bacteriophages reinforcing the idea that our current knowledge on the phage world indicates only the tip of the iceberg （Clark, 2012）. The discovery of bacteriophages dramatically expanded the scope of applications of viruses in biotechnology and biomedicine.

An efficient hybrid evolutionary optimization algorithm based on PSO and SA for clustering

The K-means algorithm is one of the most popular techniques in clustering. Nevertheless, the performance of the Kmeans algorithm depends highly on initial cluster centers and converges to local minima. This paper proposes a hybrid evolutionary programming based clustering algorithm, called PSO-SA, by combining particle swarm optimization (PSO) and simulated annealing (SA). The basic idea is to search around the global solution by SA and to increase the information exchange among particles using a mutation operator to escape local optima. Three datasets, Iris, Wisconsin Breast Cancer, and Ripley's Glass, have been considered to show the effectiveness of the proposed clustering algorithm in providing optimal clusters. The simulation results show that the PSO-SA clustering algorithm not only has a better response but also converges more quickly than the K-means, PSO, and SA algorithms.

Numerical analysis of nonlinear dynamic behavior of earth dams

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the dynamic behavior of earth *** numerical investigation employs a fully nonlinear dynamic finite difference analysis incorporating a simple elastic perfectly plastic constitutive model to describe the stress-strain response of the soil and the Rayleigh damping to increase the level of hysteretic *** extended Masing rules are implemented into the constitutive model to explain more accurately the soil response under general cyclic *** soil stiffness and hysteretic damping change with loading *** procedures for calibrating the constructed numerical model with centrifuge test data and also a real case history are *** the latter,the Long Valley(LV)earth dam subjected to the 1980 Mammoth Lake earthquake as a real case-history is analyzed and the obtained numerical results are compared with the real measurements at the site in both the time and frequency *** good agreement is observed between computed and measured *** seems that the Masing rules combined with a simple elasto-plastic model gives reasonable numerical ***,a comprehensive parametric study is carried out to identify the effects of dam height,input motion characteristics,soil behavior,strength of the shell materials and dam reservoir condition on the dynamic response of earth *** real earthquake records with different levels and peak acceleration values(PGAs)are used as input *** results show that the crest acceleration decreases when the dam height increases and no amplification is ***,more inelastic behavior and more earthquake energy absorption are observed in higher dams.

Uncertainty and energy-sector equity returns in Iran:a Bayesian and quasi-Monte Carlo time-varying analysis

This study investigates whether the implied crude oil volatility and the historical OPEC price volatility can impact the return to and volatility of the energy-sector equity indices in *** analysis specifically considers the refining,drilling,and petrochemical equity sectors of the Tehran Stock *** parameter estimation uses the quasi-Monte Carlo and Bayesian optimization methods in the framework of a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model,and a complementary Bayesian network analysis is also *** analysis takes into account geopolitical risk and economic policy uncertainty data as other proxies for *** study also aims to detect different price regimes for each equity index in a novel way using homogeneous/non-homogeneous Markov switching autoregressive *** these methods provide improvements by restricting the analysis to a specific price-regime period,they produce conflicting results,rendering it impossible to draw general conclusions regarding the contagion effect on returns or the volatility transmission between ***,the results indicate that the OPEC(historical)price volatility has a stronger effect on the energy sectors than the implied volatility *** types of oil price shocks are found to have no effect on the drilling sector price pattern,whereas the refining and petrochemical equity sectors do seem to undergo changes in their price patterns nearly concurrently with future demand shocks and oil supply shocks,respectively,gaining dominance in the oil market.

A hybrid Bayesian-network proposition for forecasting the crude oil price

This paper proposes a hybrid Bayesian Network(BN)method for short-term forecasting of crude oil *** method performed is a hybrid,based on both the aspects of classification of influencing factors as well as the regression of the out-ofsample *** the sake of performance comparison,several other hybrid methods have also been devised using the methods of Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC),Random Forest(RF),Support Vector Machine(SVM),neural networks(NNET)and generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity(GARCH).The hybrid methodology is primarily reliant upon constructing the crude oil price forecast from the summation of its Intrinsic Mode Functions(IMF)and its residue,extracted by an Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD)of the original crude price *** Volatility Index(VIX)as well as the Implied Oil Volatility Index(OVX)has been considered among the influencing parameters of the crude price *** final set of influencing parameters were selected as the whole set of significant contributors detected by the methods of Bayesian Network,Quantile Regression with Lasso penalty(QRL),Bayesian Lasso(BLasso)and the Bayesian Ridge Regression(BRR).The performance of the proposed hybrid-BN method is reported for the three crude price benchmarks:West Texas Intermediate,Brent Crude and the OPEC Reference Basket.

Severity and injury characteristics among matched hospitalized motorcycle drivers and their passengers

Purpose: After car accident, motorcycle accident ranks as the second leading cause of traffic fatality in Iran. This study aimed to compare the severity and clinical presentations between drivers and passengers under the same injury circumstance. Methods: This study was conducted in the trauma center of Shiraz, Iran in 2017. Data on demographics, triage level, blood pressure, respiratory rate, Glasgow coma scale (GCS), injured body region, injury severity score (ISS), revised trauma score (RTS), and result of accident were compared between pairs of Keywords: Injuries Motorcycle driver Passenger drivers and passengers. The agreement of any type of injury between drivers and passengers evaluated by Kappa test. Results: This study included 143 matched pairs of drivers and passengers. Most of the pairs (84.5%) did not use helmet and 77.2% of the riders do not have driving license. ISS was significantly higher in drivers than passengers. In the unmatched pairs, drivers and passengers showed no difference in sustaining injuries in the face, head & neck, chest and soft tissue, but drivers were found more likely to suffer from injuries in the abdomen, extremities, pelvis and spine than passengers. Once one part of the matched pair suffered injury in the head & neck, face, chest, abdomen, extremities and soft tissue & skin injury, the probability that the other part had an injury in the same region was 50%, 9%, 13%, 7%, 22% and 34% respectively. Kappa value for these body regions was 0.006, 0.009,-0.006, 0.068, 0.063 and 0.001, respectively, which was significant in abdomen and extremities. Conclusion: Although drivers had higher level of injury severity and some different injury distributions, we recommend equal treatment to drivers and passengers. We also recommend related authorities to develop policies on helmet use, driving license and third-party insurance.
