ESbL Produ.tion and Mu.tidru. Resistance of Salmonella Serovars Isolates in benu. State

Stu.ies on ESbL-produ.ing and mu.ti-dru. resistance of Salmonella serovars distribu.ed in benu. State were investigated. A total of fou. hu.dred and twenty (420) clinical stool samples, seventy (70) from each local government area were randomly collected from selected hospitals and analyzed for the presence of Salmonella spp. The isolates were characterized u.ing Gram staining and biochemical tests. The resu.t of AP120E biochemical test strip which contained dehydrated bacterial media and biochemical reagents in twenty (20) separate compartments. The resu.t was obtained by evalu.tion of the compartments du. to observed changes in after 24 hou.s where others were read by adding u. reagents (Ferric chloride, Kovacs V.P reagents). The resu.ts were analyzed afterwards in accordance with the manu.actu.er’s software and positive resu.ts with ≥89% potential were confirmed as Salmonella spp. Amplified plasmids derived from 18 Salmonella strains recognized were made u. of 23,130 base pairs. ESbL (Extended-spectru. beta-lactamases) genes were located on the plasmids. Two of the ESbL genes fou.d were TEM genes and CTX-M (415 bp). Strains su.h as S. enterica Typhimu.iu.-CP014981.1, S. enterica Enteritidis-CP007325.2, S. enterica Typhimu.iu.-CP024619.1, S. enterica Typhimu.iu.-CP023166.1, S. bongori-FR877557 and S. enterica Enteritidis-TY1 possessed TEM genes where as S. enterica Heidelberg-CP019176.1, S. enterica Typhi-AL513382.1 and S. enterica Typhimu.iu.-MH196335.1 possessed CTX-M. Antibiotic resistance testing was performed u.ing Kirby-bau.r disc diffu.ion method. The overall percentage su.ceptibility of the eight antibiotics tested on Salmonella serovars isolates shows that GEN had the highest % su.ceptibility of 100% followed by NIT (72.2%) and COT (66.7%) before and after plasmid cu.ing. % su.ceptibility was lower before cu.ing than after cu.ing i

Risk of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Overlap Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Stu.y

backgrou.d Co-existence of obstru.tive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstru.tive pu.monary disease (COPD) is referred to as overlap syndrome. Overlap patients have greater degree of hypoxia and pu.monary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Stu.ies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not have increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) bu. it is not known if overlap patients have higher risk of AF. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with overlap syndrome have an increased risk of AF. Methods In this single center, commu.ity-based retrospective cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age withou. AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were divided into OSA grou. (n = 60), COPD grou. (n = 416), overlap syndrome grou. (n = 28) and grou. with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF over the following two years. Logistic regression was performed to adju.t for heart failu.e (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrovascu.ar disease, cardiac valve disorders, diabetes mellitu., hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity. Resu.ts The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD grou., 6% in OSA grou. and 21% in overlap syndrome grou. (P u.ting for age, sex, HF, CKD, and HTN, patientswith overlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, CKD and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P u.ion Among elderly patients, the presence of overlap syndrome is associatedwith a marked increase in risk of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.

Optimal Water Pipe Replacement Policy

Water scarcity is the major problem confronting both u.ban and ru.al dwellers in Enu.u.State. This scarcity emanated from indiscriminate pipe failu.e, lack of adequ.te maintenance, u.certainty on the time of repair or replacement of pipes etc. There is no systematic approach to determining replacement or repair time of the pipes. Hence, the ru.e of thu.b is u.ed in making su.h a vital decision. The popu.ation is increasing, hou.es are bu.lt bu. the network is not expanded and the existing ones that were installed for no less than two to three decades ago are not maintained. These compou.ded the problem of scarcity of water in the state. Replacement or repair of water pipes when they are seen spilling water cannot solve this lingering problem. The solu.ion can be achieved by developing an adequ.te predictive model for water pipe replacement. Hence, this research is aimed at providing a solu.ion to this problem of water scarcity by su.gesting a policy that will be u.ed for better planning. The interests in this paper were to obtain a water pipe failu.e model, the intensity fu.ction λ(t) [failu.e rate], the reliability R(t) and the optimal time of replacement and they were achieved. It was observed that the failu.e rate of the pipes increases with time while their reliability deteriorates with time. Hence, the Optimal replacement policy is that each pipe shou.d be replaced after 4th break when the reliability = 0.0011.

A note on the u.steady flow of a fractional Maxwell flu.d throu.h a circu.ar cylinder

In this note the velocity field and the adequ.te shear stress corresponding to the u.steady flow of a frac- tional Maxwell flu.d du. to a constantly accelerating circu.ar cylinder have been determined by means of the Laplace and finite Hankel transforms. The obtained solu.ions satisfy all imposed initial and bou.dary conditions. They can easily be redu.ed to give similar solu.ions for ordinary Maxwell and Newtonian flu.ds. Finally, the influ.nce of pertinent param- eters on the flu.d motion, as well as a comparison between models, is u.derlined by graphical illu.trations.

Observational data su.h as those obtained from the magnetosheath in the downstream of Earth＇s bow shock have waveforms that differ from those of sinu.oidal signals. In practice, they are not even aggregates of sinu.oidal signals. Therefore, the frequ.ncy decomposition for the data requ.res techniqu. that will accou.t for the time-varying featu.es of the data that will lead to dedu.tion of physical meaning of the observations. The combination of empirical mode decompo- sition （EMD） and Hilbert transform has been u.ed for extracting the variou. contribu.ing oscillatory modes （EMDs） and the instantaneou. frequ.ncy determination （Hilbert transform） of every physically meaningfu. mode called intrinsic mode fu.c- tion （IMF）. The resu.ting instantaneou. frequ.ncies are u.ed to determine instantaneou. wave vectors. The combination of the instantaneou. frequ.ncies and wave vectors is u.efu. in the identification of wave modes based on the characteristics of the waves. The resu.ts show that EMD-Hilbert can be more reliable than simple Hilbert transform alone.
