Xanthan sulfuric acid is an efficient solid acid catalyst for the preparation of 2-aryl benzimidazoles in excellent yields. This method is applicable for the reaction of benzo[c][ 1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,5-diamine with aldehydes by sim- ple physical grinding at room temperature. The salient features of the present methodology is cheaper process, easy synthesis of stable catalyst and the catalyst can be easily recycled without significant loss of activity.

To assess the phytochemical properties of Chromoleana odorata in the control of blackflies to help check the problem of environmental pollution from the use of chemical insecticides. Methods Dried pulverized leaves of Chromolaena odorata （100 g） were soaked in distilled water for 24 hours and the extract was filtered, marc pressed and evaporated over water bath. Stock solution of the dried mass （1 g） was concentrated by dissolving in 100 mL of water. Serial dilutions （100 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL, 1 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL, 0.01 mg/L, and 0.001 mg/mL） of both the extract and Chlopyrifos （organo phosphorus） were prepared and toxicity was tested on the larvae of Simulium species. Results The chemical compound recorded 100% larval mortality at all concentrations while the plant extract recorded 100% larval mortality in three （100, 10, and 1 mg/mL） of its diluent concentration. The percentage of larval mortality by chemical compound and plant extract was statistically insignificant （t = 0.2456, P〉0.05）, but the mortality rate was significant within 30 rain interval of exposure time （t= 3.756, P〈0.05）. The LCs0 of the plant extract was determined at about 0.001 mg/mL concentration. This showed that the plant extract had an appreciable larvicidal property close to that of the chemical compound. Conclusion This result indicates the usefulness of plant materials in the control of obnoxious insect vectors of mn. It also opens additional approach to the management of environment from toxic chemicals that are non-biodegradable and cause environmental imbalance in the ecosystem.

An exhaustive structural analysis was carried out on three Indian coals （ranging from sub-bituminous to high volatile bituminous coal） using a range of advanced characterization tools. Detailed investigations were carded out using UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The X-ray and Raman peaks were deconvoluted and analyzed in details. Coal crystallites possess turbostratic structure, whose crystallite diameter and height increase with rank. The tJdC ratio plotted against aromaticity exhibited a decreasing trend, confirming the graphitization of coal upon leaching. It is also found that, with the increase of coal rank, the dependency of I20/I26 on La is saturated, due to the increase in average size of sp2 nanoclusters. In Raman spectra, the observed G peak （1585 cm^-1） and the D2 band arises from graphitic lattices. In IR spectrum, two distinct peaks at 2850 and 2920 cm i are attributed to the symmetric and asymmetric -CH2 stretching vibrations. The intense peak at - 1620 cm^-1, is either attributed to the aromatic ring stretching of C=C nucleus.

Dislocation engineering concept has been successfully employed to tackle the strength-ductility trade-off in steels, resulting in the development of high-strength high-ductility deformed and partitioned(D&P)steel. The present perspective proposes to employ such dislocation engineering concept to develop strong and ductile magnesium(Mg) alloys. High density of dislocations could be generated at appropriate temperature and retained in the Mg alloy after quenching to room temperature. Those dislocations inherited from the warm deformation could provide dislocation sources when the Mg alloy is deformed at room temperature, resulting in good ductility. The high dislocation density generated at warm deformation provides dislocation forest hardening, leading to improved yield strength of Mg alloy.

The treatment of isolated segmental, sectoral and right hepatic bile duct injuries is controversial. Nineteen patients were treated over a 26-year period. Group one was comprised of 4 patients in whom the injury was primarily repaired during the original surgery; 3 over a T-tube, 1 with a Roux-en-Y. These patients had an uneventful recovery. The second group consisted of 5 patients in whom the duct was ligated; 4 developed infection, 3 of which required drainage and biliary repair. Two patients had good long-term outcomes; the third developed a late anastomotic stricture requiring further surgery. The fourth patient developed a small bile leak and pain which resolved spontaneously. The fifth patient developed complications from which he died. The third group was comprised of 4 patients referred with biliary peritonitis; all underwent drainage and lavage, and developed biliary fistulae, 3 of which resolved spontaneously, 1 required Roux-en-γ repair, with favorable outcomes. The fourth group consisted of 6 patients with biliary fistulae. Two patients, both with an 8-wk history of a fistula, underwent Roux-en-γ repair. Two others also underwent a Roux-en-γ repair, as their fistulae showed no signs of closure. The remaining 2 patients had spontaneous closure of their biliary fistulae. A primary repair is a reasonable alternative to ligature of injured duct. Patients with ligated ducts may develop complications. Infected ducts require further surgery. Patients with biliary peritonitis must be treated with drainage and lavage. There is a 50% chance that a biliary fistula will close spontaneously. In cases where the biliary fistula does not close within 6 to 8 wk, a Roux-en-γ anastomosis should be considered.

An analysis of the breakup of the 31 Ne weakly-bound neutron-halo system on a lead target is presented,considering the 2p_(3/2) and 1f_(7/2) ground-state *** is shown that a high centrifugal barrier almost wipes out the breakup channel,thus assimilating the breakup of a weakly-bound system to that of a tightly-bound system,and also reduces the range of the monopole nuclear ***,a high centrifugal barrier prevents the suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference(CNI) peak by weakening couplings to the breakup channel and reducing the range of the monopole nuclear potential,two main factors that would otherwise suppress such a *** present study also identifies couplings to the breakup channel and a long-ranged monopole nuclear potential as the main factors that lead to the suppression of the CNI peak.A low centrifugal barrier together with a Coulomb barrier would also effectively prevent the suppression of the CNI peak in proton-halos as reported in the case of the 8b proton-halo.

Erythropoietin (Epo) is the regulator of red blood cell formation. Its receptor (EpoR) is now found in many cells and tissues of the body. EpoR is also shown to occur in tumor cells and Epo enhances the proliferation of these cells through cell signaling. EpoR antagonist can reduce the growth of the tumor in vivo. In view of our current knowledge of Epo, its recombinant forms and receptor, use of Epo in cancer patients to enhance the recovery of hematocrit after chemotherapy treatment has to be carefully evaluated.
