Physico-chemical indices of b.eeding sites of Simulium damnosum in the lower Cross River b.sin, nigeria

To determine the factor influencing the ab.ndance development and distrib.tion of Simulium damnosum(S.I) immature stages in the lower Cross River b.sin, nigeria, the physico-chemical characteristics of water at b.eeding sites were analysed longitudinally over a 12 month period. Analysis of the water samples showed that water current correlated positively and significantly(pn(r = 0.95 vs 0.10); conductivity(r = 0.95 vs 0.81); hydrogen ion concentration(r = 0.03 vs 0.46); and b.ochemical oxygen demand(r = 0.80 vs 0.64); from Agb.k.m Waterfalls and Afi River respectively. The result indicates that these parameters and low ionic concentration are the most essential requirement for the development of S. damnosum pre-imaginal stages. Amplitudes of annual variab.lity as measured b. co-efficient of variation varied b.tween the parameters. From the trends in hydrological variab.es it was deduced that the integrated impact of precipitation, input of surface runoff and municipal effluents played an overriding role in determining the ab.olute levels and temporal pattern in the water quality attrib.tes. Of the 3578 pre-imaginal stages of S. damnosum collected, 52.52% and 47.4% were collected from Agb.k.m Waterfall and Afi River respectively. There was a significant difference(pn the numb.r of pre-imaginal stages collected from b.th sites. The highest numb.r of pre_imaginal stages of S. damnosum collected were at the peak.of rain(July—Septemb.r) indicating that S. damnosum in the River b.sin is a wet season b.eeder. The need for long term lab.ratory colonization of b.ack.ly immature stages b.comes imperative especially how these parameters could b. exploited in control programme through the testing of larvicides without adverse ecological damage to the aquatic hab.tat.

In-situ electron irradiation and aging are applied to introduce high-density precipitates in an Mg-10Gd-3Y-1Zn-0.5Zr(GWZ1031k.wt.%)alloy to improve the *** results show that the hardness of the Mg alloy after irradiation for 10 h and aging for 9 h at 250℃ is 1.64 GPa,which is approximately 64% higher than that of the samples b.fore b.ing *** is mainly attrib.ted to γ'precipitates on the b.sal plane after irradiation and the high-density nanoscale β'precipitates on the prismatic plane after aging,which should b. closely related to the irradiation-induced homogenous *** latter plays a k.y role in precipitation *** result paves a way to improve the mechanical properties of metallic materials b. tailoring the precipitation through irradiation and aging.

This study is a contrib.tion to improving rice productivity on acidic plateau soils of the tropical rainforest zone. It is b.sed on tak.ng into account the cationic b.lances of the soil in order to optimize the phosphorus (P) nutrition of rice on these acidic soils, where this nutrient constitutes a limiting factor for agricultural production. Three (3) pot trials were conducted in Adiopodoumé in the forested south of Côte d’Ivoire. The interactive effects of calcium carb.nate (0, 25, 50 and 75 k. Ca ha−1) and magnesium sulfate (0, 25, 50 and 75 k. Mg ha−1) were evaluated on the response of nERICA 5 rice at doses 0, 25, 50 and 75 k. P ha−1 of natural phosphate from Togo, applied only once at the start of the experiment. Additional fertilizers of nitrogen (n) (100 k. n ha−1) and potassium (k. (50 k. k.l ha−1) were added to each of the tests in a split-plot device. The test results revealed a paddy production potential of approximately 3 to 5 t⋅ha−1 for nERICA 5 on an acidic soil, under the effect of the interaction of P, Ca and Mg. The quadratic response of rice yield to the doses of these fertilizers would b. more dependent on their b.lance, itself influenced b. Ca nutrition. For the sustainab.lity and maintenance of rice production in agro-ecology studied, it was recommended doses of 38 k. Ca ha−1, 34 k. Mg ha−1 in a Ca/Mg ratio (1/1) with intak.s of 41 k. P ha−1, overall in a ratio 1/1/1 (P/Ca/Mg) more favorab.e to the availab.lity of free iron considered a guiding element of mineral nutrition. Thus, these promising results should b. confirmed in a real environment for b.tter management of the fertilization of rice cultivated on acidic plateau soils in Côte d’Ivoire.

Petrogenesis and geotectonic setting of the Pan-African b.sement rock. in b.menda Massif, Ob.du Plateau, southeastern nigeria: Evidence from trace element geochemistry

The rock. of the Ob.du Plateau range from high-grade metagreywack.-pelite sequence to metaigneous (granitic to tholeiitic) and polymagmatic (calc-alk.line granitic to olivine tholeiitic) igneous rock.. Several co-variance diagrams and other parameters indicate that the trace elements of rock. in southern Ob.du Plateau exhib.t systematic variations and suggest highly heterogeneous protoliths. The tectonic setting of the rock. indicates rifting and collisional to non-orogenic emplacements in oceanic to ensialic environments. The calc-alk.line and tholeiitic nature of the magmatism as well as the greywack.-pelite sequence is suggestive of an Andean-type continental environment.

X-ray ab.orption near-edge spectroscopy(XAnES).The formation of lithium polysulfides was excluded as the driving cathode reaction mechanism,suggesting the great potential of MoS_(3)as a promising sulfur-equivalent cathode material to evade the shuttle effect for Li-S *** present study successfully demonstrates the importance of structural design of freestanding electrode enhancing the cycling performances and revealing the corresponding mechanisms.

Pericarditis in Cardiology at a Regional Hospital

Introduction: Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium with or without pericardial fluid effusion. Its prevalence is difficult to determine given the many forms that are not symptomatic. In Africa, its prevalence was 6.3% in Gab.n in 2020 and 7.2% in Mali in 2022. In Europe, an Italian study estimates the incidence of acute pericarditis at 27.7 cases per 100,000 people per year. In another study conducted in Finland over a period of 9 years, the incidence of pericarditis requiring hospitalisation was 3.32 cases per 100,000 people per year. The aim of our study was to describ. the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of pericarditis ob.erved in the cardiology department of the regional hospital in Mali. Methodology: This was a single centre cross-sectional study from 30 January 2018 to 30 June 2020 in the cardiology department of the Ségou regional hospital. All consenting patients, regardless of age or sex hospitalised in the department for pericarditis confirmed on cardiac ultrasound were included. Data were collected using an individual patient follow-up form recording sociodemographic, clinical, b.ological, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic data, as well as the course of the disease. Results: Out of 879 patients hospitalized, the hospital frequency was 7.28%. Females predominated, with a sex ratio of 0.42. More than half the patients were aged 45 or younger (59.4%). The mean age of patients was 41.8 ± 18.1 years. Cardiovascular risk.factors were dominated b. hypertension and smok.ng (46.9% and 12.5% respectively). The reasons for consultation were dyspnoea (84.3%), chest pain (54.7%), cough (71.9%) and fever (34.4%). Physical signs included muffled heart sounds (76.6%), tachycardia (70.3%), pericardial friction (17.2%) and signs of peripheral stasis in 53.1% of cases. We ob.erved elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) in 57.8% of cases, hypercreatininaemia in 37.5% and positive HIV serology in 3.1%. The major radiographic signs were cardiomegal

b.ck.round: In Sub.Saharan Africa, pre-eclampsia remains a major health prob.em contrib.ting to high rates of maternal mortality. Despite this condition having adverse effects on maternal and child health, its prevalence and associated risk.factors are still significant, especially in developing countries including Ghana. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and demographic distrib.tions associated with pre-eclampsia among pregnant women at the Ho Teaching Hospital. Methods: A facility-b.sed retrospective study was conducted b. reviewing availab.e data or hospital records of pregnant mothers admitted to the lab.r and maternity wards from January 2018 to Decemb.r 2020. All pregnant women who were diagnosed with pre-eclampsia within this period were included in the study. The data were collected using a structured check.ist. Results: 5609 data on pregnant women from 2018 to 2020 were recorded. Out of the 5609 data recorded, 314 pre-eclampsia cases were recorded giving an overall prevalence of 5.6%. The yearly prevalence for 2018, 2019, and 2020 were 4.6%, 5.6%, and 6.6%, respectively. The most recorded pre-eclampsia cases were seen among women within the age group of 18 - 24 years. The data showed that 112 (35.7%) of the pregnant women who had pre-eclampsia were nulliparous. Pre-eclampsia-associated maternal and fetal complications were;preterm delivery 221 (70.4%), intrauterine fetal death 62 (19.7%), eclampsia 9 (2.9%), HELLP syndrome 5 (1.6%) and maternal death 17 (5.4%). Associated factors of pre-eclampsia were parity, level of education, and occupation (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed a rising trend in the incidence of pre-eclampsia over the years at the Ho Teaching Hospital. Parity, level of education, and occupation were found to b. associated with developing pre-eclampsia.
