What Makes Homeowners Consider Protective Actions to Reduce Disaster Risk?An Application of the Precaution Adoption Process Model and Life Course Theory

We hypothesize that for disaster risk mitigation,many households,despite being aware of their risk and possible mitigation actions,never seriously consider doing anything about *** mitigation-focused decisions,since there is no equivalent to warning messages,the decision process is likely to evolve over an extended *** explore what activates hurricane mitigation protective action decisions through three research questions:(1)to what extent are homeowners unengaged in protective action decision making?(2)What homeowner characteristics are associated with lack of engagement?And(3)to what extent do different life events trigger engagement in the decision-making process?We use the Precaution Adoption Process Model to conceptualize engagement as distinct from decision making;the broader protective action decision-making literature to explore drivers of engagement;and Life Course Theory to examine potential transitions from unengaged to *** use survey data of homeowners in North Carolina to examine these questions *** suggest that one-third of respondents had never engaged in protective action decisions,that life experiences differ in their occurrence frequency and effect on households’mitigation decisions,and that some events,such as renovating,reroofing,or purchasing a home may offer critical moments that could be leveraged to encourage greater engagement in mitigation decision making.

Two-dimensional ferroelectrics from high throughput computational screening

We report a high throughput computational search for two-dimensional ferroelectric *** starting point is 252 pyroelectric materials from the computational 2D materials database(C2Db)and from these we identify 63 *** particular we find 49 materials with in-plane polarization,8 materials with out-of-plane polarization and 6 materials with coupled in-plane and out-of-plane *** of the known 2D ferroelectrics are recovered by the screening and the far majority of the predicted ferroelectrics are known as bulk van der Waals bonded compounds,which makes them accessible by direct *** roughly 25%of the materials we find a metastable state in the non-polar structure,which may imply a first order transition to the polar ***,we list the magnetic pyroelectrics extracted from the C2Db and focus on the case of VAgP2Se6,which exhibits a three-state switchable polarization vector that is strongly coupled to the magnetic excitation spectrum.

Integration of Carbon Assimilation Modes with Photosynthetic Light Capture in the Green Alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is capable of using organic and inorganic carbon sources simultaneously, which requires the adjustment of photosynthetic activity to the prevailing mode of carbon assimilation. We obtained novel insights into the regulation of light-harvesting at photosystem II （PSII） following altered carbon source avail- ability. In C. reinhardtii, synthesis of PSll-associated light-harvesting proteins （LHCbMs） is controlled by the cytosolic RNA- binding protein NAb1, which represses translation of particular LHCbM isoform transcripts. This mechanism is fine-tuned via regulation of the nuclear NAb1 promoter, which is activated when linear photosynthetic electron flow is restricted by CO2- limitation in a photoheterotrophic context. In the wild-type, accumulation of NAb1 reduces the functional PSII antenna size, thus preventing a harmful overexcited state of PSII, as observed in a NAbl-less mutant. We further demonstrate that trans- lation control as a newly identified long-term response to prolonged CO2-1imitation replaces LHCII state transitions as a fast response to PSII over-excitation. Intriguingly, activation of the long-term response is perturbed in state transition mutant stt7, suggesting a regulatory link between the long- and short-term response. We depict a regulatory circuit operating on distinct timescales and in different cellular compartments to fine-tune light-harvesting in photoheterotrophic eukaryotes.

Spatial separation of phosphatase and kinase activity within the bub complex is required for proper mitosis

The bub1 and bubR1 kinetochore proteins support proper chromosome segregation and mitotic checkpoint activity. bub1 and bubR1 are paralogs with bub1 being a kinase, while bubR1 localizes the PP2A-b56 protein phosphatase to kinetochores in humans. Whether this spatial separation of kinase and phosphatase activity is important is unclear as some organisms integrate both activities into one bub protein. Here, we engineer human bub1 and bubR1 proteins integrating kinase and phosphatase activities into one protein and show that these do not support normal mitotic progression. A bub1–PP2A-b56 complex can support chromosome alignment but results in impairment of the checkpoint due to dephosphorylation of the Mad1 binding site in bub1. Furthermore, a chimeric bubR1 protein containing the bub1 kinase domain induces delocalized H2ApT120 phosphorylation, resulting in the reduction of centromeric hSgo2 and chromosome segregation errors. Collectively, these results argue that the spatial separation of kinase and phosphatase activities within the bub complex is required for balancing its functions in the checkpoint and chromosome alignment.
