Plants emit biogenic volatile organic compounds（bVOCs） causing transcriptomic, metabolomic and behavioral responses in receiver organisms. Volatiles involved in such responses are often called ＂plant language＂. Arthropods having sensitive chemoreceptors can recognize language released by plants. Insect herbivores, pollinators and natural enemies respond to composition of volatiles from plants with specialized receptors responding to different types of compounds. In contrast, the mechanism of how plants＂hear＂ volatiles has remained obscured. In a plant-plant communication, several individually emitted compounds are known to prime defense response in receiver plants with a specific manner according to the chemical structure of each volatile compound. Further, composition and ratio of volatile compounds in the plant-released plume is important in plantinsect and plant-plant interactions mediated by plant volatiles. Studies on volatile-mediated plant-plant signaling indicate that the signaling distances are rather short, usually not longer than one meter. Volatile communication from plants to insects such as pollinators could be across distances of hundreds of meters. As many of the herbivore induced VOCs have rather short atmospheric life times, we suggest that in long-distant communications with plant volatiles,reaction products in the original emitted compounds may have additional information value of the distance to emission source together with the original plant-emitted compounds.

Defining the molecular characteristics of seminal plasma proteins is essential for understanding their function in physiological and pathological conditions. Starting from the predicted importance of human seminal plasma gelatin-binding proteins, comprising fibronectin （FN） and FN-related molecules, for male fertility, this study aims at gaining insight into their immuno-glycobiochemical properties. Human seminal plasma from subjects with normal semen parameters were separated on a gelatin-Sepharose column and analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting using antibodies against distinct FN forms. Heterogeneity of the isolated molecular species was examined by protein chip arrays combined with surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, on normal, metal and hydrophobic surfaces. Carbohydrate composition was investigated using mannose-, fucose- and sialic acid-specific plant lectins and galectin-1. The results obtained indicated a pattern of isolated proteins corresponding to that of known FN fragments, as confirmed by immunoreactivity. Among them heparin-binding ability was preferentially associated with low molecular mass species. As for posttranslational modifications, phosphorylation and glycosylation of distinct fragments were revealed. Lectin binding to fragments containing the gelatin-binding domain, particularly with Ricinus communis agglutinin I, was stronger than to fragments containing the cell-binding site of FN. A low level of sialylation and distinctive concanavalin A- and Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive species were also observed. Galectin-1 did not interact with the isolated preparation. Resolving the molecular heterogeneity of normal human seminal plasma FN and gaining initial insight into possible similarities/differences with known FN molecular species may be considered a prerequisite step preceding challenging the clinical usefulness of these molecular properties.

The crystal structure of ludwigite from Vranovac ore deposit （boranja Mt., Serbia） was refined using the X-ray powder diffraction （XRPD） Rietveld method in the space group Pbam to a final Rb=7.45% and RF=5.26%. It has the unit cell dimensions of： a=9.2515（2） A; b=12.3109（2） A; c=3.03712 （7） A; and V=345.91（1） A3. The calculated distances and angles are mostly in good agreement with the Mg2＋-Fe2＋ substitutions across the M（1） and M（3） sites, as well as with the Fe3＋-AI3＋ replacement in the M（4） site. However, the mean observed M（2）-O distance is considerably shorter than prescribed, due to a slight increase of the Fe3＋ content in the M（2） site. Such replacement was compensated by slight increase of the Fe2＋ content in the M（4） site, resulting in the （Mg1.4sFe2＋o.46Fe3＋***.o2）2.o1 （Fe3＋o.94Fe2＋0.04Al0.02）1.00b1.00Os composition. The formation temperature was estimated to be about 500- 600C. The influences of the various chemical compositions to the crystallographic parameters, M-O distances, M（3） and M（4） sites shift, distortion parameters and estimated valences, were also studied and compared with other reference samples.

Cyanobacteria are known to be a rich source of biologically active compounds some of which can have pharmaceutical importance. In this work we present the screening results of cyanobacterial strains for their antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxic activity. Cyanobacterial strains were isolated from various soil types in province of Vojvodina and Central Serbia, Republic of Serbia. The screening included 9 strains of Anabaena and 9 strains of Nostoc. both, extracellular products (from the culture liquid) and cellular crude lipophilic extracts were tested against 13 bacterial strains and 8 fungal strains. Cytotoxic activity was tested against three human cell lines. Methanol extracts were prepared according to ?stensvik. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were determined measuring inhibition zone, 48 h after inoculation. The cytotoxic activity was determined by sulforhodamine b (SRb) colorimetric assay. Of all cyanobacterial strains tested, 52% showed some antifungal and 41% antibacterial activity. Two out of six tested strains possessed cytotoxic activity. The cytotoxic activity of Anabaena strain S12 was found both in culture liquid and crude cell extract. It occurred specifically between the 21st and 42nd day of cultivation against HeLa and MCF7 cells, but had no activity against cell line derived from a healthy tissue. A high percentage of the active strains among the tested strains justify the effort of screening cyanobacteria that are isolated from terrestrial environments. The most promising strains for the fur- ther study are Anabaena strain S12 which showed strong cytotoxic and antibacterial activity and Ana- baena strain S20 which produces a potent antifungal compound. The future work, besides further screening and chemical identification of the active compounds, should also include the development of culture techniques that would lead to more efficient production of biologically active compounds.

The retrospective study (2002-2007) for human leptospirosis in Vojvodina was undertaken in order to describe the distribution of the disease in relation with some environmental factors. Regarding the presented results, the major detected number of leptospirosis cases concurs with stagnant waters, wetlands, fish pond areas and protected regions, which comprised the basis for mapping of the region in three risk zones: very high risk (incidence rate higher than 5.0), high risk (2.5-5.0) and medium risk of leptospirosis infection (1.0-2.5). During the investigated period, 97 cases were registered with an average of 13.85 cases per year: 2002, 32 cases; 2003, 7; 2004, 22; 2005, 16; 2006, 4 and 2007, 16. Out of these 97 cases only 5 were women. Serovars from 11 presumptive serogroups caused infection, with a predominance of Icterohaemorrhagiae and bratislava, accounting for 72.72% of cases together. Icterohaemorrhagiae was the commonest infecting serogroup mostly connected with fish ponds. Case fatality ratio was 9.4%.

The aim of this study was selection of appropriate Lactobacillus strains for production of functional whey-based beverage. Sixteen strains of different species of Lactobacillus genera were studied and their abilities to carry out fast production of the beverage with satisfactory fermentation parameters were assessed. Preliminary screening was performed by evaluating volumetric productivity of tested strains after 24 h of the fermentation. Further selection was based on determining beverage production parameters such as fermentation time, titratable acidity, cell number and sensory characteristics. The strains showed remarkable differences in cell number and sensory properties, which were particularly useful in the selection. based on the obtained results, the strains Lb. casei ssp. casei ATCC 27139 and Lb. johnsonii NRRL b-2178 are good candidates for the beverage production. These strains are rather similar in terms of beverage production ability, but strain Lb. johnsonii NRRL b-2178 is a top candidate for functional whey based beverage production. This strain attained titratable acidity of 9.2 °SH after 10 h of fermentation, appropriate odor and cell number of 6.8 log （CFU mL-1）.
