Crude decoction, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of two medicinal plants （Psidiura guajava and Diospyros raespiliformis）, widely used in the central plateau of burkina Faso to treat many diseases were evaluated for their antagonistic effects on caffeine induced calcium release from sarcoplasmic reticulum of rat skeletal muscle cells. These different extracts showed a decrease of caffeine induced calcium release in a dose dependent manner. Comparison of the results showed that Psidiura guajava leaf extracts are more active than extracts of Diospyros mespiliformis and that crude decoctions show better inhibitory activity. The observed results could explaine their use as antihypertensive and antidiarrhoeal agents in traditional medicine, by inhibiting intracellular calcium release.

This study utilizes empirical equations to describe the propagation of vibrations induced by blasting, with the goal of predicting the attenuation of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) at the Yaramoko mine in bagassi, burkina Faso, a site characterized by granitoid rock. Four empirical PPV prediction equations were employed, so-called Duvall & Fogelson (or the United States bureau of Mines “USbM”), Langefors and Kihlstrom, Ambressys-Hendron, and the bureau of Indian Standard. The constant parameters for each of these equations, referred to as site constants, were derived from linear regression curves. The results show that the site constants k, a, and b of 4762, 0.869, and 1.737, respectively, derived from the general prediction equation by Davies, PPV = kQaD−b, based on Duvall & Fogelson, are in good agreement with values of 4690, 0.9, and 1.69, respectively, for similar rock types in Spain. Regarding the impacts of blasting on houses, the findings indicate that houses built from laterite-block bricks in the village of bagassi are the most vulnerable to vibration waves, followed by those constructed with cinder-block bricks. In contrast, houses made of banco bricks are the most resilient. Additionally, it was determined that during blasting operations, adjusting the blasting parameters to ensure the PPV does not exceed 2 mm/s at the level of nearby dwellings can minimize the appearance of cracks in houses.

Lubricants are very often found in nature under waste-oil forms and represent for the environment a real danger of pollution due to the difficulty of their biodegradation. The situation is especially worrying in most developing countries in particular those of Sub-Saharan Africa due to the absence of regulation or control. The present work aims to isolate bacterial strains able to degrade hydrocarbons which can later be used in biotechnology for environments depollution. Oil-contaminated wastewater samples were collected in Ouagadougou city (burkina Faso) and then used as source of bacterial isolation. Appropriate amounts of samples were inoculated to a mineral salt medium (MS) with Total Quartz 9000 oil as sole carbon and energy source and then incubated for enrichment, prior to microbe isolation. Two bacterial strains namely S2 and S7 were isolated from the enrichment cultures. The strains were tested for their ability to degrade other hydrocarbons (i.e. gasoline, diesel oil, brake oil) and for temperature, pH and salt concentration ranges for growth before their biochemical characteristics were defined. based on their morphological, physiological and biochemical traits, strains S2 and S7 belong to Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas genera, respectively.

Rice is one of the staple crops in burkina Faso. However, the local production covers only 47% of the population demands. One of the main reasons of the poor productivity in burkina Faso is iron toxicity which is related mainly to the activity of Iron Reducing bacteria in the rice field’s ecosystems. In order to control the harmful effects of Iron Reducing bacterial populations and to improve rice productivity, a pots experiment was conducted at the experimental site of the University Ouaga I Pr. Joseph KI-ZERbO. An iron toxic soil from Kou Valley (West of burkina Faso) and two rice varieties, bOUAKE-189 and ROK-5, sensitive and tolerant to iron toxicity, respectively, were used for the experiment. The pots were drained for 14 days (D2) and amended with chemical fertilizers (NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn complexes). Control pots without drainage and fertilization (D0/NF) were prepared similarly. The kinetics of Iron Reducing bacterial populations and ferrous iron content in soil near rice roots were monitored throughout the cultural cycle using MPN and colorimetric methods, respectively. The total iron content was evaluated in rice plant using a spectrometric method. Data obtained were analyzed in relation to drainage and fertilization mode, rice growth stage and rice yield using the Student’s t-test and XLStaT 2014 statistical software. The experiment showed that the combined application of subsurface drainage and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn fertilization, reduced significantly the number of IRb in the soil near rice roots for both rice varieties (p = 0.050 and p = 0.020) increased the leaf tissue tolerance to excess amounts of Fe, and rice yield.

Situs inversus is an abnormal placement of the thoracic and/or abdominal organs that are inverted right/left from normal. It is a rare congenital malformation often discovered in childhood. In adults, it can lead to misdiagnosis. Clinical case: A 35-year-old female patient, seen in a hepatogastroenterology consultation for acute spontaneous pain in the right hypochondrium. She had no particular clinical history. A diagnosis of hepatopathy was suspected. Abdominal and pelvic CT scans showed the left liver, stomach and spleen in the right hypochondrium, but with the heart in place, suggesting incomplete situs inversus. The evolution in our patient was spontaneously resolved with analgesics and antispasmodics, which leads us to believe that the volvulus was probably partial and without other complications. Conclusion: In developing countries, antenatal diagnosis of situs inversus is rare and is usually made during a pathology that leads the patient to a medical consultation. CT is one of the key paraclinical examinations for its diagnosis as genetic tests are not widely available.

background: Postpartum eclampsia is a life-threatening obstetric emergency. Its management is multidisciplinary. Despite measures taken to accelerate the reduction of maternal, fetal and infant mortality in burkina Faso, maternal deaths related to postpartum eclampsia persist. The aim of the study was to investigate the epidemiological, clinical and prognostic aspects of postpartum eclampsia in the obstetrics department of the Sourô Sanou University Hospital in bobo-Dioulasso. Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection covering the period from June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019. We included 76 patients in the study;the variables studied were the epidemiological, clinical and prognostic aspects. The data collected were entered on a microcomputer and analyzed with the EPI info version 7.2 software. Results: The prevalence of postpartum eclampsia was 0.87% compared to admissions to the obstetrics department. The average age of the patients was 23 years old with the extremes of 15 and 39 years old. Primiparas accounted for 39.47%, housewives 53%, and home births accounted for 15.79%. Seizures accounted for 55% of the reasons for admission, the average time to onset of these seizures postpartum was 3.8 days with extremes of 1 and 30 days with 45% of seizures occurring postpartum immediately. Maternal complications were noted in 42.10% of cases with 5 cases of Hellp syndrome, 3 cases of renal failure, and 3 cases of acute pulmonary edema. We recorded 4 cases of maternal death, representing a case fatality rate of 5.2%. Conclusion: Postpartum eclampsia is common in the obstetrics department of the Souro Sanou University Hospital Center with a significant case fatality rate. Emphasis should be placed on monitoring and prevention, especially women at risk of developing postpartum eclampsia for better maternal prognosis.

background: Anaemia in pregnancy is a public health issue in developing countries because of its high prevalence and its maternal and perinatal bad outcomes. It affects 24.8% of the world population and 67.6% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa. In burkina Faso, anaemia prevalence is estimated at 68.3%. In burkina, preventive measures for anaemia in pregnancy have been implemented by the ministry of health to reduce its burden. This study aimed to assess the epidemiological, clinical and the outcomes of anaemia in pregnant women at OUAHIGOUYA REGIONAL HOSPItaL. Findings will be used to strengthen the preventives measures for anaemia in pregnancy. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study was conducted during a four-month period from October, 28th, 2014 to February, 28th, 2015. pregnant women with haemoglobin level below 11 g/dL was considered anaemic according to WHO criteria, and who are willing to participate and who were admitted at the obstetrics and Gynecology department of the REGIONAL HOSPItaL of OUAHIGOUYA. Results: Four hundred eighty three pregnant women were anaemic out of eight hundred eighty three women hospitalized. The prevalence of maternal anaemia was 54.7% with significant monthly variations. The mean age was 24.7 ± 6.6 years. The women without non-salary occupation (housewives and pupils) represented 90.1%. A past medical history of haemoglobin defects (6.6%), twin pregnancies (6.0%), malaria (23.6%) bleeding during pregnancy (20.3%) were the most frequent. Monitoring the pregnancy was effective in 91.1% of women. The mean haemoglobin level was 8.8 ± 2.1 g/dL. The outcome was marked with 1.7% and 18.9% maternal and perinatal death respectively. The most common contributory factors were: Occupational status, number of prenatal visits, length of treatment with iron and folic acid, history of malaria, history of haemorrhage and brachial perimeter low (p 0.05). This study evaluated the effectiveness of four Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches in the control of bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) [Diptera: Tephritidae] and Ceratitis cosyra (Walker) [Diptera: Tephritidae] during two consecutive mango fruiting seasons (2018 and 2019) in the south-Sudanian zone of burkina Faso. These approaches, including sanitation + M3 bait station (SM), sanitation + protein GF-120 bait (SG), sanitation + Timaye + M3 bait station (STM) and sanitation + Timaye + GF-120 bait (STG), were implemented in 12 mango orchards in three provinces of the country. In each province, one mango orchard was used as control. Flies per trap per week (FTW) and damage indices were assessed in treated orchards compared to the control orchards. The efficacy rate of each IPM approach in protecting mango against fruit fly attacks was also determined. The STG approach was the most effective in reducing both b. dorsalis and C. cosyra FTW with the best efficacy rate. Further research should emphasize indigenous and affordable attract-and-kill tools for resource poor farmers.

biomethane potential production from cashew nut hulls, an agricultural waste, was carried out using old and fresh hulls as substrates. Samples were taken from old hulls (around 8 years old) and fresh hulls produced in cashew scale transformation units at bobo Dioulasso/burkina Faso. Physicochemical parameters showed that cashew hulls can be a good candidate for anaerobic digestion. But high acidity, total phenols and lignin tenor could be a constraint for anaerobic bacteria. Theoretical biochemical methane potential showed high value of 666.937 CHb>4b> L. (Kg VS)-1 and 526.206 CHb>4b> L. (Kg VS)-1 for crushed fresh and powdered old hulls, respectively. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) is quantitatively the highest vegetable consumed in burkina Faso. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physico-chemical, nutritional characteristics, and sanitary quality of the tomato variety Mongal F1 from different production sites. Twenty-eight (28) samples of Mongal F1 fresh tomatoes were collected from 28 producers at three different localities of Ouahigouya, Loumbila and Ouagadougou. The physico-chemical and nutritional characteristics were determined by standardized methods and the traces metallic elements by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results revealed a degree brix varying from 4.07° to 5.50° and a pH ranging from 3.71 to 4.08 corresponding to a total acidity of 0.39% to 0.55% citric acid equivalents. The moisture content, the ash content, the total carbohydrates content, the reducing carbohydrates content, the lipids content and the protein content were ranged from 95.09% to 96.17%, 9.25% to 10.60%, 47.00% to 53.43%, 30.03% to 41.21%, 3.04% to 7.71% and 17.09% to 25.03% respectively. The results of the trace metals showed a high accumulation of total cadmium from 0.11 to 0.22 ppm, of total lead of 1.15 to 1.27 ppm and arsenic total of 0.19 to 0.20 ppm. The results proved that environmental conditions influence the quality of the tomato Mongal F1. Detection of trace elements in the tomato fruits suggests that a better production practices are needed.
