A 16-year-old man had aswelling over the anterior aspect of the proximal third of the tibia for 1 year, which was peanut size initially and progressively increased to its present size of 10 cm × 8 cm. He underwent fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) twice during this period and reported aspindle cell sarcoma. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor(MPNST) is a malignancy of the connective tissue surrounding the nerves. Previously, MPNST was also known as neurofibrosarcoma, malignant schwannoma, andneurogenic sarcoma. We are reporting this case for its rarity and peculiar mode of presentation. FNAC/core biopsy can be used as an effective tool to achievethe correct pathological diagnosis.

Species diversity, regeneration and dominance as influenced by canopy gaps and their characteristics in tropical evergreen forests of Western Ghats, India

Canopy gaps play a significant role in maintaining structure and composition of tropical forests. This study was carried out in tropical evergreen forests of central Western Ghats in India to understand the influence of canopy gap size and the relationship of gap regime attributes to diversity measures and regeneration. The average gap size in the study area was found to be 396 m2 and around half of gaps were 4–8 years old. Gaps created by natural single tree fall were smaller in size but significantly higher in number. Diversity and regeneration of woody species were compared with canopy gaps and intact vegetation. Species richness and diversity was higher in gaps than in intact vegetation. Macaranga peltata, a shade intolerant species dominated gaps while intact vegetation was dominated by shade tolerant Kingiodendron *** size significantly influenced species diversity and regeneration. Gap area and age were significantly and negatively correlated with diversity measures but positively correlated with regeneration. Among all the attributes of gaps, regeneration was significantly positively correlated with light intensity. Gaps maintained species diversity and favored regeneration of woody species. In addition to gap size and age, other gap ecological attributes also affected species diversity and regeneration.

Crude phlorotannins from Eisenia bicyclis(CPEb),a common perennial brown seaweed were screened for pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antidiabetic *** Phlorotannins(CPEb)studied by FT-IR,LC-MS,UHPLC,and UV chromatography showed the occurrence of dieckol,8,8’-bieckol,fucofuroeckol,and the carotenoid,zeaxanthin(0.5 mg/kg).LPS,an inflammatory mediator,enhanced the production of cytokines such IL-1(interleukin-1),IL-6(interleukin-6),IL-8(interleukin-8),IL-10(interleukin-10),TNF-α(tumour necrosis factor-α),chemokine CXCL10,and NF-κb(nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated b cells)in differentiated THP1 macrophage *** differentiated human monocytic cell line LPS-induced THP1 cells,CPEb was found to have anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the expression of IL-1,IL-6,IL-8(1.2 fold),CXCL10,NF-κb,and TNF-α.CPEb promoted 2-NbDG absorption in differentiated C2C12 myotubes under both basal(16.08%)and insulin-stimulated(51.09%)*** increased IRS/AKT-dependent glucose absorption and also activates the AMPK ***-α-glucosidase,anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of CPEb indicate their role in treating hyperglycemia by scavenging ROS and inflammatory responses.

Toll-like receptor 9 （TLR9） recognizes microbial DNA containing unmethylated cytosyl guanosyl （CpG） sequences, induces innate immune responses, and facilitates antigen-specific adaptive immunity. Recent studies report that in addition to stimulating innate immunity, TLR9 ligands induce apoptosis of TLR9 expressing cancer cells. To understand the mechanism of TLR9-induced apoptosis, we compared the effects of CpG containing oligodeoxynucleotides （CpG ODN） on a mouse b-cell lymphoma line, CH27, with those on mouse splenic b cells. CpG ODN inhibited constitutive proliferation and induced apoptosis in the CH27 b-cell lymphoma line. In contrast, CpG ODN-treated primary b cells were stimulated to proliferate and were rescued from spontaneous apoptosis. The induction of apoptosis required the ODNs to contain the CpG motif and the expression of TLR9 in lymphoma b cells. A decrease in bcl-xl expression and an increase in Fas and Fas ligand expression accompanied lymphoma b-cell apoptosis. Treatment with the Fas ligand-neutralizing antibody inhibited CpG ODN-induced apoptosis. CpG ODN triggered a transient NF-κb activation in the b-cell lymphoma cell line, which constitutively expresses a high level of c-Myc, while CpG ODN induced sustained increases in NF-κb activation and c-Myc expression in primary b cells. Furthermore, an NF-κb inhibitor inhibited the proliferation of the CH27 b-cell lymphoma line. Our data suggest that the differential responses of lymphoma and primary b cells to CpG ODN are the result of differences in NF-Kb activation. The impaired NF-Kb activation in the CpG ODN-treated b-cell lymphoma cell line alters the balance between NF-κb and c-Myc, which induces Fas/Fas ligand-dependent apoptosis.

Myeloid cells,such as neutrophils,are produced in the bone marrow in high quantities and are important in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension(PH).Although neutrophil recruitment into sites of inflammation has been well studied,the mechanisms of neutrophil egress from the bone marrow are not well *** computational flow cytometry,we observed increased neutrophils in the lungs of patients and mice with ***,we found elevated levels of IL-6 in the blood and lungs of patients and mice with *** observed that transgenic mice overexpressing Il-6 in the lungs displayed elevated neutrophil egress from the bone marrow and exaggerated neutrophil recruitment to the lungs,resulting in exacerbated pulmonary vascular remodeling,and dysfunctional ***,we found that IL-6-induced neutrophil egress from the bone marrow was dependent on interferon regulatory factor 4(IRF-4)-mediated CX3CR1 expression in ***,Cx3cr1 genetic deficiency in hematopoietic cells in Il-6-transgenic mice significantly reduced neutrophil egress from bone marrow and decreased neutrophil counts in the lungs,thus ameliorating pulmonary remodeling and *** summary,these findings define a novel mechanism of IL-6-induced neutrophil egress from the bone marrow and reveal a new therapeutic target to curtail neutrophil-mediated inflammation in pulmonary vascular disease.
