Amaranthus roxburghianus root extract in combination with piperine as a potential treatment of ulcerative colitis in mice

ObJECTIVE： The present work was undertaken to determine the effects of Amaranthus roxburghianus Nevski. （Amaranthaceae） root alone and in combination with piperine in treating ulcerative colitis （UC） in mice. METHODS： Swiss albino mice were divided into seven groups （n = 6）. Standard group received prednisolone （5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally）. Treatment groups received hydroalcoholic extract of roots of A. roxburghianus （50 and 100 mg/kg, per oral） and a combination of hydroalcoholic extract of roots of A. roxburghianus （50 and 100 mg/kg, per oral） and piperine （5 mg/kg, per oral）. Ulcer index, colitis severity, myeloperoxidase （MPO）, malondialdehyde and glutathione were estimated from blood and tissue. Column chromatography of the extract was done and purified fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy （GC-MS）. RESULTS： Treatment with the combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus and piperine showed minimal ulceration, hemorrhage, necrosis and leucocyte infiltration by histopathological observation. Acetic acid increased MPO levels in blood and colon tissue to 355 U/mL and 385 U/mg, respectively. The combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus （100 mg/kg） and piperine （5 mg/kg） significantly decreased MPO in blood and tissue to 182 U/mL and 193 U/mg, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. Similarly, this combination significantly reduced malondialdehyde levels and increased glutathione levels in blood and tissue. Various phytoconstituents were detected by GC-MS. CONCLUSION： The combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus and piperine is effective in the treatment of UC and the effects are comparable with the standard drug prednisolone. 4H-pyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl, eugenol and benzene, and 1-（1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl）-4-methyl are reported having analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties; they may play a role in the biological activity of A. roxburghianus root.

Cu^+-incorporated TiO_2 overlayer on Cu_2O nanowire photocathodes for enhanced photoelectrochemical conversion of CO_2 to methanol

In this paper, we report photoelectrochemical（PEC） conversion of carbon dioxide（CO_2） using photocathodes based on Cu_2O nanowires（NWs） overcoated with Cu~＋-incorporated crystalline TiO_2（TiO_2–Cu~＋）shell. Cu_2O NW photocathodes show remanent photocurrent of 5.3% after 30 min of PEC reduction of CO_*** coating Cu_2O with TiO_2–Cu~＋ overlayer, the remanent photocurrent is 27.6%, which is an increase by5.2 fold. The charge transfer resistance of Cu_2O/TiO_2–Cu~＋ is 0.423 k/cm2, whereas Cu_2O photocathode shows resistivity of 0.781 k/cm2 under irradiation. Mott–Schottky analysis reveals that Cu~＋ species embedded in TiO_2 layer is responsible for enhanced adsorption of CO_2 on TiO_2 surface, as evidenced by the decrease of capacitance in the Helmholtz layer. On account of these electrochemical and electronic effects by the Cu~＋ species, the Faradaic efficiency（FE） of photocathodes reaches as high as 56.5% when TiO_2–Cu~＋ is added to Cu_2O, showing drastic increase from 23.6% by bare Cu_2O photocathodes.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of relaxing music during colonoscopy under low-dose conscious sedation, on patient satisfaction, scope insertion time and procedure duration, medication doses, and the perceived adequacy of sedation and scope insertion difficulty on the part of the endoscopist. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven consecutive adult outpatients presenting for routine colonoscopy under low-dose conscious sedation were randomized to undergo their procedures either with music played during the procedure or no music played. RESULTS: There were no statistical differences between the two groups in terms of meperidine dose, midazolam dose, time to reach the cecum, total procedure time, endoscopist assessment of scope insertion difficulty, endoscopist assessment of adequacy of sedation, or the pain experience of the patients during their procedure. The music group did report significantly better overall procedure satisfaction as compared to the non music group on two of our three different scales. CONCLUSION: While music does not result in shortened procedure times, lower doses of sedative medications or perceived patient pain, the patients who have music playing during their procedures report modestly greater satisfaction with their procedures.

Novel one-pot synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives using amino functionalized silica gel catalyst

A simple, efficient, and environmentally benign method for the synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives was developed using well ordered and recoverable amino functionalized silica gel as a base catalyst. The 4H-chromene derivatives were obtained in short time and excellent yield （87%-96%） by three component reaction of aldehydes, malononitrile and cyclic 1,3-diketones in water at 70 ℃.

An efficient synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidine 2 （1H）-ones and thiones （3,4-DHPMs） core was prepared by one-pot threecomponent biginelli condensation and which was catalyzed by trifluoromethane sulfonic acid. The classical bigneUi reaction has been extended by the use of N-substituted benzoxazolyl semicarbazides and thiosemicarbazides and this method has the advantage of excellent yields and short reaction times. ？2009 M. Magnesium(Mg)and its alloys are now becoming the promising choice for various structural applications due to their low density and high specific strength compared with other light metals such as aluminum and its *** all Mg alloys,AZ(aluminum and zinc)series is the most widely used alloy system for various structural ***,machining of magnesium and its alloys involves certain issues due to their brittle nature and risk of inflammability unlike other nonferrous ***,alloys with considerable amount of secondary phase may exhibit different machining characteristics during metal cutting *** the present study,two AZ series alloys AZ31 and AZ91 were selected and drilling operation was performed to assess the effect of the secondary phase amount and distribution on machining *** operation was carried out at different sets of process parameters and cutting forces were obtained and the chips which have been produced during drilling were *** the results,it can be clearly understood that the presence of secondary phase(Mg_(17)Al_(12))has a significant influence on cutting *** in cutting speed has reduced the required cutting force and load fluctuations in all the cases.

AIM: To study the gastroprotective effect and in vivo antioxidant potential of a standardized iridoid fraction from b. prionitis leaves(bPE) against different gastric ulcer models in rats. METHOD: The standardized iridoid fraction from bPE at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight was administered orally, twice daily for 5 days for prevention from aspirin, ethanol, cold-restraint stress(CRS), and pylorus ligation(PL)-induced ulcers. Estimation of the antioxidant enzyme activity was carried out in a CRS-induced ulcer model, and various gastric secretion parameters including volume of gastric juice, acid output, and pH value were estimated in the PL-induced ulcer model. RESULTS: bPE showed a dose-dependent ulcer protective effect in PL(18.67%–66.26% protection), aspirin(24.65%–63.25% protection), CRS(20.77%–59.42% protection), and EtOH(16.93%–77.04% protection)-induced ulcers. bPE treatment in PL-rats showed a decrease in acid-pepsin secretion, and enhanced mucin and mucosal glycoproteins. However, bPE reduced the ulcer index with significant decrease in LPO(P bPE possesses anti-ulcerogenic and antioxidant potential.

In the present work,the effect of process parameters on joining of AZ91 Mg alloy and Al6063 aluminum alloy sheets during friction stir welding(FSP)was studied.A successful joint was achieved at 1100 *** rotational speed and 25 mm/min tool travel *** of tool rotational speed and tool travel speed has observed a profound effect on the material flow mechanisms at the nugget *** the microstructural studies,the joint formation was observed as mainly due to mechanical mixing of the *** level of metallurgical continuity at the nugget zone was observed as poor and a sharp interface at the joint was *** microhardness measurements across the weld joint also revealed the lack of establishment of a perfect metallurgical bonding.X-ray diffraction analysis of weld zone showed presence of both magnesium and *** from the preliminary observations,it can be understood that the joining of AZ91 Mg alloy and Al6063 alloy can be achieved by FSP;however,complex issues in material mixing still need further investigations.
