The effect of bio-glass (45s5) addition on the physical properties of Mg-5Zn matrix composite has been investigated. Powder metallurgy method was used to fabricate the composite by mixing, compacting and followed by sintering. Mg-5 wt% Zn was reinforced with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 wt% of bio-glass (bG). The physical properties such as density and porosity were determined using a pcynometer. corrosion resistance was studied by immersion test. The results showed that porosity of the sintered sample decreased for the Mg-5 wt% Zn reinforced with 5 wt% of bio-glass. However, above 5 wt% of bio-glass, the porosity increased. The result also showed that corrosion resistance of Mg-5 wt% Zn increased as the amount of bio-glass increased.

species of staphylococcus are common in hospital infection (HI). Methicillin resistant s. aureus (MRsA) has also become a serious problem in brazilian HI. The aim of this study was to cha.a.terize the pathogenicity of methicillin-resistant s. aureus (MRsA) and methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MssA) isolated in public hospitals. The clinical isolates were obtained from intensive care unit. The MRsa.a.d MssA strains were genotyped by PcR for detection genes related to virulence factors. Moreover, the strains were tested for biofilm formation and cytokine induction in macrophages. Three strains of MRsA (9.68%) expressed the sea gene, one (3.23%) seb, 17 (54.84%) spa.a.d seven (22.58%) had PVL. Two MssA strains (2.98%) expressed the sea gene, three (4.48%) seb, 18 (26.87%) spa.a.d 11 (16.42%) showed positive results for the PVL gene. There was no expression of sec and cflA between MRsa.a.d MssA strains. Among MRsa.a.d MssA isolates, none statistical differences were observed in biofilm production. The a.a.ysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response of J774 macrophages by MRsa.a.d MssA isolates did not show statistical difference. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis of s. aureus could provide important clues for both preventing and treating infection caused by these organisms.

Pelargonium sidoides Dc is used in herbal medicine for the treatment of various infections. The roots are being indiscriminately harvested for local and export trade and the collection rate is becoming unsustainable. seed germination dynamics of this species was studied with the aim to reveal factors that influence its survival in the wild in order to adopt the appropriate germination conditions for use in ex-situ propa.a.ion and conservation program. Germination was affected by age of seeds, temperature and pre-chilling conditions. Temperature higher than 25 oc reduced germination by 60%. When seeds of P. sidoides were subjected to pre-chilling treatment for seven days, there was a significant drop in final germination by 29% compared to the other treatments. Although, final germination was not affected by different light treatments, continuous light significantly promoted germination velocity seeds harvested from the plants grown in the green house performed better in germination than those collected from the field. The ecological implications of these observations on the propa.a.ion and conservation ofP. sidoides are discussed.

The Ti effects on the glass forming ability and the magnetic properties of Y-Fe-b-Ti bulk metallic glasses have been *** 2 and 4 at% Ti for Fe or b in Y_6Fe_ 70b_ 22 alloys decrease the saturation magnetization(σ_s)and deteriorate the glass forming ability,***,substitution of 2 at% Ti for Y in Y_6Fe_ 72b_ 22 alloy induces larger supercooled region of 72.7℃,which not only makes the bulk glassy rod as large as 3mm in diameter,but also results in the superior soft magnetic properties of σ_s=126emu/g,coercivity(H_c)=0.2 Oe and curie temperature(T_c)=268℃.Among all Y-Fe-b-Ti bulk amorphous rods,Y_4Fe_ 72b_ 22Ti_2 displays the b.s. glass forming ability and also the proper soft magnetic properties.

This article explains the results of a study conducted on the cha.a.terizations of subgrade soils in the region of Thies. The road platforms are mainly composed of a background soil, which is generally overlapped by a surface layer that plays two roles. Firstly, it protects the soil structure, ensures the leveling, and facilitates the movement of vehicles. secondly, it brings harmony in the mechanistic cha.a.teristics of the materials that compose the soil while improving the long-term life force. The methodology consisted in taking samples of subgrade soil along the roads all over the region of Thies in a 5 km diameter span. The identification tests allowed the Thies-Tivaoune, Thies-Khombole and Thies-Noto axes are cha.a.terized by tight sands, poorly graded size. While Thies Pout-axis is cha.a.teristic of severe solid particle size and spread well graded and serious to spread and well graded particle size. Finally the Thies-Montrolland axis is cha.a.terized by severe to very tight particle size and graduated to spread and serious and well graded particle size. The specific gravity values found Proctor test shows the presence of sand, sandy laterite and laterite. In the target area, polished soils of the A-3 type according to the AAsHTO classification system are the most represented with 60%, followed by the A-2-6 type 25%, and the A-2-4 type with 9%, which are typical of gravel, clay, and silty sands. soils of the A-1-b type (2%) typical of roc fragments, sands and clay are also represented. Polished sands of the A-3 type have a better efficiency on road infrastructures than other types of soil listed above. Finally, we’ve also noted the presence of soils of the A-2-7 and A-4 types with the low percentage of 2%. subgrade soils of class s4 are the most represented with 58%, followed by those of class s5 with 42%. samples of the Thies-Montrolland road have a claylike plasticity (cL or cH group), while those of the Thies-Pout road belong to the ML or OL and cL or OL

background: Drugs that kill or inhibit sexual stages of Plasmodium such as Primaqiune (PQ) could potentially amplify or synergize the impact of first line antima.a.ials by blocking transmission to mosquitoes. This study examined the effect of Primaquine on gametocyte carriage in the case ma.a.ement of uncomplicated falciparum ma.a.ia with artemisinin-b.s.d combination therapy (AcT) with the overall purpose of possibly recommending it as an adjunct drug for ma.a.ia control. Methods: A total of 181 patients with uncomplicated falciparum ma.a.ia, normal glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme levels, and haemoglobin levels ≥ 8 g/dL completed this two-arm randomized blinded clinical trial to test the efficacy of a single dose PQ (0.75 mg/kg) on falciparum gametocytaemia. 88 subjects were assigned to a standard 3-day course of Dihydroartemisinin-Piperaquine (DHP) alone (n = 88) while 93 others had DHP combined with a single dose of PQ on day 3 (n = 93). A 28-day follow-up schedule carried out in the outpatient clinic of a Primary health facility in Vom, Plateau state Nigeria where study participants were seen on days 1, 3, 7 and then weekly to assess the presence of asexual pa.a.ites and gametocytes by microscopy. A Kaplan-Meier a.a.ysis was employed to determine the survival function of gametocytes on day 3. The da.a.was a.a.yzed using Epi info version 7.1.5. Results: With a gametocyte prevalence of 27.1%, gametocyte carriage rate was lower in the PQ group due to higher probability of clearing gametocytes (breslow test χ2 = 8.306, df = 1, p = 0.004) and significantly less likely to harbor gametocytes by day 7 when compared to the DHP-alone group (χ2 = 6.218, df = 1, p = 0.013). conclusion: Addition of single-dose 0.75 mg/kg PQ was associated with reduced gametocyte carriage as a result of faster gametocyte clea.a.ce and lower incidence of gametocyte development in DHP-treated patients. PQ as gametocytocidal drug may be useful in combination with artemisinin-b.s.

Despite its proximity to other well studied islands, cebu has received little attention from herpetologists, most likely because of early deforestation and the perception very little natural habitat remains for amphibians and reptiles. In this study, we present a preliminary assessment of island＇s herpetofauna, focusing our field work on cebu＇s last remaining forest fragments and synthesizing all a.a.lable historical museum distribution da.a. We surveyed amphibians and reptile populations using standardized methods to allow for comparisons between sites and assess sufficiency of sampling effort. Fieldwork resulted in a total of 27 species recorded from five study sites, complementing the 58 species previously known from the island. Together, our da.a.and historical museum records increase the known number of cebu＇s resident species to 13 amphibians（frogs） and 63 reptiles（lizards, snakes, turtle, crocodile）. We recorded the continued persistence cebu＇s rare and endemic lizard（brachymeles cebuensis） and secretive snakes such as Ma.a.otyphlops hypogius, and Ramphotyhlops cumingii, which persist despite cebu＇s long history of widespread and continuous habitat degra.a.ion. Most species encountered, including common and widespread ta.a. appeared to persist at low population abundances. To facilitate the immediate recovery of the remaining forest fragments, and resident herpetofauna, conservation effort must be sustained. However, prior to any conservation interventions, ecological b.s.lines must be established to inform the process of recovery.
