Influence of Small-Size Contaminations on Thin Film Structural Properties

An approach for studying the influence of nano-particles on the structural properties of deposited thin films is proposed. It is based on the molecular dynamic modeling of the deposition process in the presence of contaminating nano-particles. The nano-particle is assumed to be immobile and its interaction with film atoms is described by a spherically symmetric potential. The approach is applied to the investigation of properties of silicon dioxide films. Visualization tools are used to investigate the porosity associated with nano-particles. The structure of the film near the nano-particle is studied using the radial distribution function. It is found that fluctuations of film density near the nano-particles are essentially different in the cases of low-energy and high-energy deposition processes.

In improving the competitiveness of business organi sa tion in the 21st century, minimising cost and increasing productivity are no lon ger factors that could promise the success. The changes in customer trends whic h focusing more on product or service customising, high quality and short delive ry times are additional crucial factors that organisation should be aware of. T hese factors have direct relations on how the management could utilise the capab ility of its supply chain management (SCm). The importance of SCm in organisati on specifically to manufacturer is to play a vital role in managing the flow of material and information along the chain from suppliers to customers. In a trad itional way, SCm is mainly manage by the production department in organisation b ut with the advancement in information technology, resulted the changes in worki ng environment. One of the ways that could be implemented in decision making p rocess in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the decision is t hrough collaborative environment. Due to this situation, there is a need to rede sign the existing SCm in order to optimise its capability and functionality in t he way to ensure the organisation competitiveness is sustainable. A minor or ma jor alignment to SCm business processes should be done in order to streamline th e flow of information, which could also affect the flow of materials. Factors s uch as SCm operational, structural and even its managerial are among the issues that are critical in redesigning its business process. Each of these factors has its own attributes such as lead-times, complexity, frequency and organisationa l setting that could lead in improving organisational competitiveness. In additi on, by identifying these factors, it would help the management to plan and desig n the collaborative SCm that would effectively correspond to the changes in busi ness and customer trends. Low symmetry aspects in spectroscopic and magnetic susceptibility studies of Tb^(3+)(4f^8) in TbAlO_3

The three sets of crystal field parameters （CFPs） obtained from spectroscopic and magnetic susceptibility studies of Tb3＋（4f^8） ions in TbAlO3 by Gruber et al. （J. Lumin. 128 （2008） 1271） were reanalyzed. These sets, fitted from experimental energy levels, are physically equivalent and correspond to specific choices of the axis system. Proper interpretation of experimental data for Tb3＋ ions at monoclinic C8 symmetry sites in TbAlO3 crystal requires clarification of several intricate low syrmnetry aspects, namely, （a） three equivalent forms of monoclinic CF Hamiltouian, （b） relative orientation of the crystallographic axis system w.r.t, the symmetry-adapted axis system, （c） monoclinic standardization of CFPs, （d） distinction between the actual and apparent low symmetry effects exhibited by CFPs, and （e） nominal nature of all fitted CFP sets. For this purpose, modeling of CFPs for Tb3＋ in TbAlO3 was carried out using at the first stage only the Coulomb, i.e. point charge, eonlribntions in the exchange charge model. The point charge model calculated CFPs disagree with the experimental CFPs, especially the rank k=6 CFPs. To explain this discrepancy and to verify the correcmess of the theoretical CFP calculations additionally the superposition model was employed. The methods of analysis and modeling of CFP sets for monoclinic symmetry cases proposed here proved useful for the studied case as well as might be used for other ion-host systems exhibiting monoclinic or triclinic local site symmetry. Partial results for Tb3＋ ions in TbAlO3 were presented here, whereas detailed results were given in a follow-up paper.

meloxicam(mLX) is an anti-inflammatory drug susceptible to variations and crystalline transitions. In compounding pharmacies, the complete crystallographic evaluation of the raw material is not a routine procedure. We performed a complete crystallographic characterization of aleatory raw mLX samples from compounding pharmacies. X-ray diffraction indicated the presence of two crystalline forms in one sample. DSC experiments suggested that crystallization, or a crystal transition, occurred differently between samples. The FTIR and ~1H NmR spectra showed characteristic assignments.^(13)C solid-state NmR spectroscopy indicated the presence of more than one phase in a sample from pharmacy b. The Hirshfeld surface analysis, with electrostatic potential projection, allowed complete assignment of the UV spectra in ethanol solution. The polymorph I of meloxicam was more active than polymorph III in an experimental model of acute inflammation in mice. Our results highlighted the need for complete crystallographic characterization and the separation of freely used raw materials in compounding pharmacies,as a routine procedure, to ensure the desired dose/effect.

Correlation between Porosity and Fracture mechanism in High Pressure Die Casting of Am60b Alloy

X-ray tomography was used to characterize the porosity in high pressure die casting of Am60b alloy. In situ tensile deformation was performed to observe the change of porosities and their influences on crack initiation, propagation and subsequent fracture of specimen. Results showed that four types of porosi- ties, including gas-shrinkage pore, gas pore, net-shrinkage and island-shrinkage, could be identified according to the formation mechanism and morphology characterization. During tensile deformation, it was shown that the gas-shrinkage pore and net-shrinkage, rather than gas pore or island-shrinkage, were the main sources for crack initiation. In addition, the crack propagated by interconnecting the po- rosities at the cross section with minimum efficient force bearing area. At these locations where externally solidified crystals （ESCs） were present, the crack would propagate along the ESC boundaries in an inter- granular mode, while at these locations without ESCs, the crack would propagate roughly along the direction perpendicular to the tensile stress in a combination of trans-granular and inter-granular modes.

HYDRATION AND PHASE SEPARATION OF TEmPERATURE-SENSITIVE WATER-SOLUbLE POLYmERS

Collapse of a poly（N-isopropylacrylamide）（PNIPAm） chain upon heating and phase diagrams of aqueous PNIPAm solutions with very fiat LCST phase separation line are theoretically studied on the basis of cooperative dehydration （simultaneous dissociation of bound water molecules in a group of correlated sequence）, and compared with the experimental observation of temperature-induced coil-globule transition by light scattering methods. The transition becomes sharper with the cooperativity parameter σ of hydration. Reentrant coil-globule-coil transition in mixed solvent of water and methanol is also studied from the viewpoint of competitive hydrogen bonds between polymer-water and polymer-methanol. The downward shift of the cloud-point curves （LCST cononsolvency） with the mole fraction of methanol due to the competition is calculated and compared with the experimental data. Aqueous solutions of hydophobically-modified PNIPAm carrying short alkyl chains at both chain ends （telechelic PNIPAm） are theoretically and experimentally studied. The LCST of these solutions is found to shift downward along the sol-gel transition curve as a result of end-chain association （association-induced phase separation）, and separate from the coil-globule transition line. Associated structures in the solution, such as flower micelles, mesoglobules and higher fractal assembly, are studied by USANS with theoretical modeling of the scattering function.

The longitudinal profile of a river channel can be described in function of mathematical expressions. The logarithmic fit is the most used method to describe the relative equilibrium of a channel elevation profile. Rivers showing zones of high channel gradient and convex-upward profiles can be evaluated in function of the offset distance with respect to the logarithmic curve. The Jama River profile has been constructed using differential GPS data for the downstream reach and 4-m-grid DEm data base for the remaining headward profile. The resulting longitudinal profile shows a prominent knickpoint of about 80 m in elevation characterized by sharp local convexity. The offset distance in vertical direction from the logarithmic plot is interpreted as the successive accumulation of multiple uplift episodes associated with the Jama Fault System activity. The horizontal offset is suggested to represent the remaining retreated distance for the upstream propagation of the Jama knickpoint. The highly resistant Cretaceous rocks outcropping along the Jama knickpoint reach acts as an inflection point between two subprofiles that show well-fitted logarithmic curves, thereby representing a temporary partitioned equilibrium along the Jama River profile.

Parallel propagating modes and anomalous spatial damping in the ultra-relativistic electron plasma with arbitrary degeneracy

The dispersion relations of parallel propagating modes（Langmuir mode, right and left handed circular polarized waves） in the weak magnetic field limit ｜ω-k·v｜〉〉？ are considered for ultra-relativistic arbitrary degenerate electron plasma. The results are presented in terms of moments of Fermi-Dirac distribution. The increase in the electron equilibrium number density from negative large（weakly degenerate） to positive large（highly degenerate） values of μ/Te is observed（where μ is the electron chemical potential and Te is the electron thermal energy）. As a result, shifting of the cutoff points in all the real dispersion branches towards the higher values and increasing in the band gap between unmagnetized longitudinal and transverse modes in k-space are examined. Also, the suppression of the weak magnetic field effects in weakly magnetized right handed and left handed circular polarized waves and a decrease in the longitudinal and transverse screening effects are observed in the graphical patterns due to an increase in the equilibrium number density.

一种电磁式地震计简单而又精确的标定方法得到论证,即从信号线圈释放一阶跃电流信号,同时把信号线圈切换到记录器,以记录其响应。本文研究一种理论,即分析响应的系统识别输出,求得地震计有阻尼的发电机常数、谐振频率及阻尼系数。整个标定只需知道地震计的质量(厂家提供)和所施加的电流(可测量)。无需线圈电阻和阻尼电阻。这种标定方法通过与重锤标定方法和标定线圈的标定方法比较而得到证实。对GS-13V地震计,各种标定方法结果互相都在1.3％以内。用信号线圈标定方法得到的有阻尼的发电机常数计算的无阻尼发电机常数,比厂家提供的发电机常数优1％。对9个新的L-4C地震仪标定,无阻尼发电机常数标定结果均在厂家提供数值的3％以内。本文给出了信号线圈标定方法所用的电路并作了解释。
