Unraveling giant Cu（110） surface restructuring induced by a non-planar phthalocyanine

The surface stability of coinage metals is paramount when they are used as electrode materials for functional electronic devices incorporating organic semiconductors. In this work, it is shown that the adsorption of non-planar vanadyl phthalocyanine molecules on Cu（110） drastically restructured the metal surface at room temperature, which was further enhanced upon moderate annealing. Scanning tunneling microscopy imaging demonstrated that the surface was restructured at step edges into sawtooth features that gradually replaced the （110） terraces. The edges of the modified steps were preferentially composed of chiral （1×6） kink sites decorated with vanadyl phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed in a tilted configuration with the oxygen atom pointing downwards. These results can have a strong impact on the optimization of the performance of organic devices integrated with phthalocyanine molecules.

Dissolved organic nitrogen （DON） represents a significant pool of soluble nitrogen （N） in soil ecosystems. Soil samples under three different horticultural management practices were collected from the Xiaxiyang Organic Vegetable and Fruit Farm, Shanghai, China, to investigate the dynamics of N speciation during 2 months of aerobic incubation, to compare the effects of different soils on the mineralization of ^14C-labeled amino acids and peptides, and to determine which of the pathways in the decomposition and subsequent ammonification and nitrification of organic N represented a significant blockage in soil N supply. The dynamics of N speciation was found to be significantly affected by mineralization and immobilization. DON, total free amino acids, and NH^＋-N were maintained at very low levels and did not accumulate, whereas NO3^--N gradually accumulated in these soils. The conversion of insoluble organic N to low-molecular-weight （LMW） DON represented a main constraint to N supply, while conversions of LMW DON to NH4^＋-N and NH4^＋-N to NO3^--N did not. Free amino acids and peptides were rapidly mineralized in the soils by the microbial community and consequently did not accumulate in soil. Turnover rates of the additional amino acids and peptides were soil-dependent and generally followed the order of organic soil 〉 transitional soil 〉 conventional soil. The turnover of high-molecular-weight DON was very slow and represented the major DON loss. Further studies are needed to investigate the pathways and bottlenecks of organic N degradation.

Adaptive Classification Methods for Predicting Transitions in the Nursing Workforce

Earlier analyses of transitions from licensed practical nurse (LPN) to registered nurse (RN) in the North Carolina (NC) nursing workforce in terms of 11 categorical predictors were limited by not considering parsimonious classifications based on these predictors and by substantial amounts of missing data. To address these issues, we formulated adaptive classification methods. Secondary analyses of data collected by the NC State board of Nursing were also conducted to demonstrate adaptive classification methods by modeling the occurrence of LPN-to-RN transitions in the NC nursing workforce from 2001-2013. These methods combine levels (values) for one or more categorical predictors into parsimonious classifications. Missing values for a predictor are treated as one level for that predictor so that the complete data can be used in the analyses;the missing level is imputed by combining it with other levels of a predictor. An adaptive nested classification generated the best model for predicting an LPN-to-RN transition based on three predictors in order of importance: year of first LPN licensure, work setting at transition, and age at first LPN licensure. These results demonstrate that adaptive classification can identify effective and parsimonious classifications for predicting dichotomous outcomes such as the occurrence of an LPN-to-RN transition.

The oceans can provide us with several direct sources of renewable energy, such as wave energy, energy from currents and energy in thermal gradients among other energy resources. The uses of these resources have not yet reached technical and economic maturity, but they have experienced significant advances in recent years. In this process, tools for feasibility analysis of hybrid systems including specific power plants are important. This article is dedicated to the feasibility study of hybrid systems containing power plants based on the energy of ocean and tidal currents. The software currently available for feasibility studies do not present specific models already developed for the simulation of this kind of power plants. Thus, this technical note shows how Homer software (Legacy version) can be used to conduct this type of study in pre-feasibility level. This article also presents a case study in which Homer is applied, focused only on Homer adaptation but without exhausting the subject, showing a feasibility window that would include current power plants with certain cost and efficiency in an existing PV wind biodiesel hybrid system.

Amphetamine Alters the Circadian Locomotor Activity Pattern of Adult WkY Female Rats

There are no reports on the effect of amphetamine on female WkY circadian activity pattern. The objective of this study is to investigate whether repeated daily exposure to the psychostimulant amphetamine alters the locomotor circadian rhythm activity patterns of female adult Wistar-kyoto (WkY) rats. Twenty-four rats were divided into two groups, control (N = 12) and experimental (N = 12), and kept in a 12:12 h light/dark cycle in an open field cage. After 5 to 7 days of acclimation, 11 days of consecutive non-stop recordings began. On experimental day 1, all groups were given an injection of saline. On experimental days 2 to 7, the experimental group was injected with 0.6 mg/kg amphetamine and the control group with saline followed by a washout phase from experimental day 8 to 10, and amphetamine re-challenge or saline on experimental day 11 similar to experimental day 2. Locomotor movements were determined using a computerized animal activity monitoring system, and cosine statistical analysis was used to fit a24-hour curve to the activity pattern. The horizontal activity (HA), total distance (TD), number of stereotypy (NOS), and stereotypical movements (SM) were analyzed for alterations in the circadian rhythm activity patterns. The data demonstrated that chronic amphetamine administration alters the mesor parameter of the circadian rhythm activity patterns, indicating that chronic amphetamine treatment exerts long term effects on these rats.

DNA separation techniques have drawn attention because of their uses in applications such as gene analysis and manipulation. There have been many studies utilizing micro-fabricated devices for faster and more efficient separations than traditional methods using gel electrophoresis. Although many experimental studies have presented various new devices and methods, computational studies have played a pivotal role in this development by identifying separation mechanisms and by finding optimal designs for efficient separation conditions. The simulation of DNA separation methods in micro-fabricated devices requires the correct capture of the dynamics and the structure of a single polymer molecule that is being affected by an applied flow field or an electric field in complex geometries. In this work, we summarize the polymer models (the bead-spring model, the bead-rod model, the slender-body model, and the touching-bead model) and the methods, focusing on brownian dynamics simulation, used to calculate inhomogeneous fields taking into consideration complex boundaries (the finite element method, the boundary element method, the lattice-boltzmann method, and the dissipative particle dynamics simulation). The worm-like chain model (adapted from the bead-spring model) combined with the finite element method has been most commonly used but other models have shown more efficient and accurate results. We also review the applications of these simulation approaches in various separation methods and devices: gel electrophoresis, post arrays, capillary electrophoresis, microchannel flows, entropic traps, nanopores, and rotational flows. As more complicated geometries are involved in new devices, more rigorous models (such as incorporating the hydrodynamic interactions of DNA with solid boundaries) that can correctly capture the dynamic behaviors of DNA in such devices are needed.
