A computational investigation of the mean flow field of turbulent rectangular jets issuing into a narrow channel crossflow is presented. The length of the jet slot spans more than 55% of the crossflow channel bed, leaving a small clearance between the jet edge and sidewalls. A finite volume code employing the standard k-εmodel is used to predict the mean, three-dimensional flow field. The mean flow field is investigated for two velocity ratios （6 and 9）. Important flow features, such as the formation of different vortical structures and their characteristics owing to different values of the velocity ratio, are discussed. Some predicted results are compared with the experimental data reported in the literature. The predicted mean and turbulent flow properties are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

A multigrid-assisted solver tbr the three-dimensional time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on graded Cartesian meshes is developed. The spatial accuracy is third-order for the convective terms and fourth-order for the viscous terms, and a fractional-step strategy ensures second-order time accuracy. To achieve good time-wise efficiency a multigrid technique is used to solve the highly time-consuming pressure-Poisson equation that requires to be solved at every time step. The speed-up achieved by multigrid is shown in tabular form. The performance and accuracy of the code are first ascertained by computing the flow in a single-sided lid-driven cubic cavity with good grid-economy and comparing the results available in the literature. The code, thus validated, is then applied to a new test problem we propose and various transient and asymptotically obtained steady-state results are presented. Given the care taken to establish the credibility of the code and the good spatio-temporal accuracy of the discretization, these results are accurate and may be used for ascertaining the performance of any computational algorithm applied to this test problem.

The ac conduction mechanism in copper oxide nanoparticles with 8 nm size, synthesized by a precipitation method was studied by analyzing ac conductivity in the frequency range of 50 Hz-1 MHz and in the temperature range of 373-573 k. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy （TEM） were employed for the structural and morphological characterization of CuO nanoparticles. The experimental and theoretical in- vestigations suggested that the ac conduction mechanism in CuO nanoparticles can be successfully explained by a correlated barrier hopping model, which provided reasonable values for the maximum barrier height and characteristic relaxation time. It was also found that bipolaron hopping become prominent up to a particular temperature and beyond that single polaron hopping predominates. Physical parameters such as hopping distance and density of defect states were also calculated. Photoluminescence studies confirm the presence of a surface defect in CuO nanoparticles.

The paper deals with the taxonomy and diversity within the genus Ficus occurring in katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary based on extensive field and herbarium studies. The genus comprises 11 species in the study area contrary to the earlier report of 8 species. Out of which, one species each belongs to herbs (F. assamica) and straggling shrubs (F. hetero- phylla) and the remaining species to shrub to big free standing trees (F. benghalensis, F. hispida, F. palmata subsp. virgata, F. racemosa, F. religiosa, F. retusa var. nitida, F. rumphii, F. semicordata and F. squamosa). F. microcarpa and F. carica have been excluded as they do not occur in the sanctuary but reported in the previous work due to mis- identification. F. repens has been segregated from F. heterophylla and reinstated as a distinct species with a correct name F. assamica. F. retusa var. nitida forms a new record for the sanctuary. In overall gross morphology, F. hispida, F. palmata subsp. virgata, F. assamica and F. heterophylla exhibit maximum diversity especially in their leaves, pe- duncles and figs. Among all species F. hispida has been found more common especially in low land and moist areas in mixed forest whereas F. retusa var. nitida has been seen with only two plants. All species have been critically examined and provided with correct nomenclature, vernacular name, description, phenology, ecology, uses and reference to voucher specimens. A dichotomous bracketed key to the species along with line drawings has also been included for identification.

In this paper, an effort has been made to study heavy rainfall events during cyclonic storms and active monsoon cycle over Indian land and associated oceanic regions from recently developed merged rainfall technique using rain gauge and multi-satellite observations from Precipitation Radar (PR) onboard Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSMI) onboard Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and Meteosat of Eumetsat. Four recent cyclonic events namely Gonu, bijli, Aila and Laila were qualitatively analyzed using rainfall from this technique. This technique is validated against another merged rainfall product TRMM-3b42V6 and rain gauge observations during heavy rainfall events of the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. Results presented in this study show that the heavy rainfall events are efficiently monitored by this technique.

Agricultural Drought Modeling Using Remote Sensing

Dielectric and magnetic properties of ba-,La-and Pb-doped bi_(0.8)Gd_(0.1)M_(0.1)Fe_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)O_(3) perovskite ceramics

Maharashtra is one of the worst drought affected states in India, and as a result the agricultural productions has kept low. In the present study Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) obtained from MODIS data(MOD13Q1) and sunspot number which represents the solar activity has been considered for drought modeling in that part of krishna basin which lies in Maharashtra. Two multiple linear regression models for predicting agricultural drought are developed for kharif season, based on the data for a period of 13 years from 2000 to 2012. In the first model, previous NDVI and SPI values and in the second model Sunspot data along with NDVI and SPI values are used as variables. It was found that the coefficient of determination of the second model has improved over the first model, which suggests the high significance of solar activity in the occurrence of drought. The correlation between NDVI and SPI has been utilized in the study. Highly significant correlations were obtained between current NDVI and SPI of various time lags in the assured rainfall zone and the scarcity Zone. Crop yield model was developed from the predicted NDVI for the major crops and was validated with the actual yield. It was found that the predicted NDVI of both the fortnights of July is highly correlated with the yield of major crops in assured rainfall zone and scarcity zone.
