Effects of Tillage and Crop Residue Management on Maize Yields and Net Returns in the Central Mexican Highlands Under Drought Conditions

In the subtropical highlands of Central Mexico,where the main crop is maize(Zea mays),the conventional practice(CP) involves tillage,monoculture and residue removal,leading to soil degradation and unsustainable use of natural resources and agricultural *** agriculture(CA) has been proposed as a viable alternative in the region,based on reduction in tillage,retention of adequate levels of crop residues and soil surface cover and use of crop *** study began in 2009 when the highlands of Central Mexico suffered from a prolonged drought during vegetative maize growth in July-August,providing an opportunity for the on-farm comparison of CA with CP under severe drought conditions which 21 climate change models projected to become more *** dry conditions,CA resulted in higher yields and net returns per hectare as early as the first and second years after adoption by *** an average of 27 plots under farmers' management in 2009,the maize yields were 26%higher under CA(6.3t ha^(-1)) than under CP(5.0 t ha^(-1)).2010 was close to a normal year in terms of rainfall so yields were higher than in 2009 for both practices;in addition,the yield difference between the practices was reduced to 19%(6.8 t ha^(-1) for CA vs.5.7 t ha^(-1) for CP).When all the 2009 and 2010 observations were analyzed in a modified stability analysis,CA had an overall positive effect of 3 838 Mexican Pesos ha^(-1)(320 $US ha^(-1)) on net return and 1.3 t ha^(-1) on *** only one to two years of adoption by farmers on their fields,CA had higher yields and net returns under dry conditions that were even drier than those predicted by the analyzed 21 climate change models under a climate change scenario,emission scenario A2.

In plants,the patterning of root meristem requires a gradient-guided auxin maximum that depends on the concerted action of polar auxin transport,auxin biosnythesis and intracellular auxin ***,mechanisms underlying this auxin gradient dependent root patterning are not fully ***,we present unexpected evidence that the activity of WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEObOX 5(WOX5) transcription factor modulates free auxin production in the quiescent center(QC) of the root and thus assures the maintenance of auxin maximum in the root ***,WOX5 expression is inhibited in a feedback-dependent manner by canonical auxin signaling that involves indole-3-acetic acid 17(IAA17) auxin response ***,we used loss-of-function and gain-of-function mutant analysis complemented by computer simulation study to identify and test the novel feedback mechanism that links WOX5-dependent auxin production to IAA17-mediated cellular auxin *** findings demonstrate that this feedback circuit is essential for the maintenance of auxin gradient in the root tip and the auxin-mediated root distal stem cell(DSC) differentiation.

Prognostic value of ^(18)F-FDG PET/CT in liver transplantation for hepatocarcinoma

AIM:To evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment F D G p o s i t r o n e m i s s i o n t o m o g ra p h y c o m p u t e d tomography(PET-CT) in patients with hepatocarcinoma treated by liver transplantation(LT).METHODS:The authors retrospectively analyzed the data of 27 patients(mean age 58 ± 9 years) who underwent FDG PET-CT before LT for *** follow-up was 26 ± 18 *** FDG PET/CT was performed according to a standard clinical protocol:4 Mbq FDG/kg body weight,uptake 60 min,low-dose non-enhanced *** authors measured the SUVmax and SUVmean of the tumor and the normal *** tumor/liver activity ratios(RSUVmax and RSUVmean) were tested as prognostic factors and compared to the following conventional prognostic factors:MILAN,CLIP,OKUDA,TNM stage,alphafoetoprotein level,portal thrombosis,size of the largest nodule,tumor differentiation,microvascular invasion,underlying cirrhosis and liver ***:Overall and recurrence free survivals were80.7%and 67.4%at 3 years,and 70.6%and 67.4%at 5 years,*** to a multivariate Cox model,only FDG PET/CT RSUVmax predicted recurrence free *** though the MILAN criteria alone were not predictive,it is worth noting that none of the patients outside the MILAN criteria and with RSUVmaxby LT in this retrospective *** prospectivestudies should test whether this metabolic index should be systematically included in the preoperative assessment.
