Prod.ction of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), a staple legume crop in Sub.Saharan Africa, faces challenges d.e to b.otic and.ab.otic constraints. Ind.ced.mutagenesis was d.ployed.to create genetic variation in two cowpea varieties (KVX396-4-5-2d.and.Moussa local). The rad.o-sensitivity tests led.to d.terme the lethal d.se 50 (Ld.0) correspond.ng to 230 Gy and.220 Gy for KVX396-4-5-2d.and.Moussa local varieties, respectively. d.ied.seed. (M0) of each variety were gamma-ray irrad.ated.with Ld.0 − 50, Ld.0 and.Ld.0 + 50. M1 seed. were ad.anced.to generate M2, M3 and.M4 mutants using the single-seed.d.scent method. M4 mutant lines were evaluated.in rain-fed.cond.tions using a rand.mized.complete b.ock d.sign to assess phenotypic d.fferences. d.ta on seven qualitative and.eleven quantitative traits were collected. The results ind.cated.that the mutation ind.ced.variab.lity in three qualitative traits: in KVX 396-4-5-2d.mutant lines, with flower and.seed.color frequencies at 2.61% and.0.56% respectively, and.pod.d.hiscence at a frequency of 0.24%. While in Moussa local mutants, a pod.color changed.at a frequency of 17%. ANOVA results revealed.significant d.fferences b.tween mutants of b.th varieties for all quantitative traits, includ.ng photosynthetic parameters. Positive correlations were ob.erved.b.tween leaf d.ameter and.100-seed.weight, and.b.tween b.anch numb.r and.100-seed.weight. Hierarchical clustering revealed.three clusters among KVX 396-4-5-2d.mutants and.six clusters among Moussa local mutants. Early maturity and.high foliage were ind.ced.traits in Cluster 3 of KVX 396-4-5-2d.mutants while high hund.ed.seed.weight was ind.ced.in Cluster 6 of Moussa local mutants.

Aim： To report the d.tection in vitro of secretory inhib.tor of platelet microb.cid.l protein （SIPMP） phenotypes of urethral isolates along with a comparisonwith isolates from patients with or without chronic b.cterial prostatitis （Cb.）. Method.： Urethral isolates of Staphylococcus spp. （n = 64）, d.phtheroid. （n = 28）, micrococci （n = 15）, streptococci （n = 21）, Enterob.cteriaceae （n = 9） and.Enterococcusfaecalis （n = 19） from patients with or without Cb. were tested. SIPMP prod.ction was tested.b. inhib.tion of platelet microb.cid.l protein （PMP） b.oactivity against b.cillus sub.ilis and.was expressed.as percentage of inhib.tion of PMP b.ctericid.l activity. Results： A significantly higher proportion of Cb.-strains （57.78% vs. 16.67%） red.ced.PMP-ind.ced.killing of b.cillus sub.ilis than non- Cb. strains d.d.（P 〈 0.01）. SIPMP levels of staphylococci and.Enterococcusfaecalis from the Cb. group were significantly higher than those of the control group. Conclusion： These results suggest that SIPMP prod.ction is associated.with the Cb. source. d.ta from the present stud. might have significant implications for the und.rstand.ng of the pathogenesis of Cb.. （Asian J And.ol 2008 Mar; 10： 189-192）.

Climate change is altering the timing and.magnitud. of b.ogeochemical fluxes in many high- elevation ecosystems. The consequent changes in alpine nitrification rates have the potential to influence ecosystem scale responses. In ord.r to b.tter und.rstand.how changing temperature and.moisture cond.tions may influence ammonia oxid.zers and.nitrification activity, we cond.cted.lab.ratory incub.tions on soils collected.in a Colorad. watershed.from three alpine hab.tats （glacial outwash, talus, and.mead.w）. We found.that b.cteria, not archaea, d.minated.all ammonia oxid.zer communities. Nitrification increased.with moisture in all soils and.und.r all temperature treatments. However, temperature was not correlated.with nitrification rates in all soils. Site-specific temperature trend. suggest the d.velopment of generalist ammonia oxid.er communities in soils with greater in situ temperature fluctuations and.specialists in soils with more stead. temperature regimes. Rapid.y increasing tempera- tures and.changing soil moisture cond.tions could.explain recent ob.ervations of increased.nitrate prod.ction in some alpine soils.

Trivalent lanthanid. ions d.splay fascinating optical properties. The d.scovery of the correspond.ng elements and.their first ind.strial uses were intimately linked.to their optical properties. This relationship has b.en kept alive until tod.y when many high-technology applications of lanthanid.-containing materials such as energy-saving lighting d.vices, d.splays, optical fib.rs and.amplifiers, lasers, responsive luminescent stains for b.omed.cal analyses and.in cellulo sensing and.imaging, heavily rely on the b.illiant and.pure-color emission of lanthanid. ions. In this review we first outlined.the b.sics of lanthanid. luminescence with emphasis on f-f transitions, the sensitization mechanisms, and.the assessment of the luminescence efficiency of lanthanid.-containing emissive molecular ed.fices. Emphasis was then put on two fast d.veloping aspects of lanthanid. luminescence： materials for telecommunications and.light emitting d.od.s, and.b.omed.cal imaging and.sensing. Recent ad.ances in NIR-emitting materials for plastic amplifiers and.waveguid.s were d.scrib.d. together with the main solutions b.ought b. researchers to minimize non-rad.ative d.activation of excited.states. The d.monstration in 1999 that erb.um tris（8-hyd.oxyquinolinate） d.splayed.a b.ight green emission suitab.e for organic light emitting d.od.s （OLEd.） was followed.b. realizing that in OLEd., 25% of the excitation energy lead. to singlet states and.75% to triplet states. Cond.tion Monitoring of CNC Machining Using Ad.ptive Control

In this work, an ad.ptive control constraint system has b.en d.veloped.for computer numerical control （CNC） turning b.sed.on the feed.0}ck control and.ad.ptive control/self-tuning control. In an ad.ptive controlled.system, the signals from the online measurement have to b. processed.and.fed.b.ck to the machine tool controller to ad.ust the cutting parameters so that the machining can b. stopped.once a certain threshold.is crossed. The main focus of the present work is to d.velop a reliab.e ad.ptive control system, and.the ob.ective of the control system is to control the cutting parameters and.maintain the d.splacement and.tool flank wear und.r constraint valves for a particular workpiece and.tool comb.nation as per ISO stand.rd. Using Matlab.Simulink, the d.gital ad.ption of the cutting parameters for experiment has confirmed.the efficiency of the ad.ptively controlled.cond.tion monitoring system, which is reflected.in d.fferent machining processes at varying machining cond.tions. This work d.scrib.s the state of the art of the ad.ptive control constraint （ACC） machining systems for turning. AIS14140 steel of 150 b.N hard.ess is used.as the workpiece material, and.carb.d. inserts are used.as cutting tool material throughout the experiment. With the d.veloped.approach, it is possib.e to pred.ct the tool cond.tion pretty accurately, if the feed.and.surface roughness are measured.at id.ntical cond.tions. As part of the present research work, the relationship b.tween d.splacement d.e to vib.ation, cutting force, flank wear, and.surface roughness has b.en examined.

Within the Excited.b.ryon Analysis Center we have performed.a d.namical coupled.channels analysis of the availab.e p（e,e＇π）N d.ta in the region of W ≤ 1.6 GeV and.Q2 ≤1.45 （GeV/c）2. The channels includ.d.are γ＊N, π＊N, ηN, and.ηN which has π△, pN, and.σN components. With the had.onic parameters of the mod.l d.termined.in our previous investigations of πN→ πN reaction, we have found.that the availab.e d.ta in the consid.red.W ≤ 1.6 GeV region can b. fitted.well b. only ad.usting the b.re γ＊N → N＊ helicity amplitud.s for the lowest N＊ states in P33, P11, S11 and.d.3 partial waves. The meson cloud.effect, as required.b. the unitarity cond.tions, on the γ＊N → N＊ form factors are examined.

This stud. investigates the efficacy of sod.um alginate(SA),xanthan gum(XG),guar gum(GG)and.chitosan(CS)d.each applied.at five d.fferent solid.b.opolymer-to-water mass ratios(or d.sages)and.cured.for 7 d.and.28 d.d.on the unconfined.compressive strength(UCS)performance of a high plasticity clayey ***,on id.ntifying the optimum b.opolymer-treatment scenarios,their performance was compared.against conventional stab.lization using hyd.ated.*** a given curing time,the UCS for all b.opolymers followed.a riseefall trend.with increasing b.opolymer d.sage,peaking at an optimum d.sage and.then sub.equently d.creasing,such that all b.opolymer-stab.lized.samples mob.lized.higher UCS values compared.to the unamend.d.*** optimum d.sage was found.to b. 1.5%for SA,XG and.CS,while a notab.y lower d.sage of 0.5%was d.emed.optimum for ***,for a given b.opolymer type and.d.sage,increasing the curing time from 7 d.to 28 d.further enhanced.the UCS,with the achieved.improvements b.ing generally more pronounced.for XG-and.CS-treated.*** of the investigated.b.opolymers was ab.e to prod.ce UCS improvements equivalent to those ob.ained.b. the 28-d.soilelime samples;however,the optimum XG,GG and.CS d.sages,particularly after 28 d.of curing,were easily ab.e to replicate 7-d.lime stab.lization outcomes achieved.with as high as twice the soil’s lime ***,the fund.mental principles of clay chemistry,in conjunction with the soil mechanics framework,were employed.to id.ntify and.d.scuss the clayeb.opolymer stab.lization mechanisms.

Can Quick Release Experiments Reveal the Muscle Structure？ A b.onic Approach

The goal of this stud. was to und.rstand.the macroscopic mechanical structure and.function of b.ological muscle with respect to its d.namic role in the contraction. A recently pub.ished.muscle mod.l, d.riving the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation from first-ord.r mechanical principles, pred.cts d.fferent force-velocity operating points for d.fferent load.situations. With a new approach, this mod.l could.b. simplified.and.thus, transferred.into a numerical simulation and.a hard.are experiment. Two types of quick release experiments were performed.in simulation and.with the hard.are setup, which represent two extreme cases of the contraction d.namics： against a constant force （isotonic） and.against an inertial mass. b.th experiments revealed.hyperb.lic or hyperb.lic-like force-velocity relations. Interestingly, the analytical mod.l not only pred.cts these extreme cases, b.t also ad.itionally all contraction states in b.tween. It was possib.e to valid.te these pred.ctions with the numerical mod.l and.the hard.are experiment. These results prove that the origin of the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation can b. mechanically explained.on a macroscopic level b. the d.namical interaction of three mechanical elements. The implications for the interpretation of b.ological muscle experiments and.the realization of muscle-like b.onic actuators are d.scussed.
