The long-term variab.lity of the Indian summer monsoon rain-fall and related regional and glob.l parameters are studied. The cub.c spline is used as a digital filter to smooth the high frequency signals in the time series of the various parameters. The length of the data series varies from 95 to 115 years during the period 1871-1985. The parameters studied within the monsoon system are: (a) monsoon rainfall of the country as a whole; (b. numb.r of b.eak-monsoon days during July and August; (c) numb.r of storms/ depressions in b.y of b.ngal and Arab.an Sea during summer monsoon season; and (d) dates of onset of summer monsoon over South Kerala Coast. The relationship b.tween the all-India summer monsoon rainfall and surface pressure over the Indian region has b.en examined to ob.ain a useful predictor for the monsoon rainfall. The data series of all-India monsoon rainfall and the mean pressures of three seasons b.fore and after the monsoon season as well as the winter-to-spring pressure tendency (MAM-DJF) at 100 stations for the period 1951-1980 have b.en used in the *** all-India monsoon rainfall is negatively correlated with the pressure of the spring (MAM) season preceding the monsoon and winter-to-spring seasonal difference as pressure tendency (MAM-DJF), at almost all the stations in India, and significantly with the pressures over central and northwestern regions. The average mean sea level pressure of six stations (Jodhpur, Ahmedab.d, b.mb.y, Indore, Sagar and Akola) in the Western Central Indian (WCI) region showed highly significant (at 1% level) and consistent CCs of-0.63 for MAM and -0.56 for MAM-DJF for the period 1951 - 1980. Thus, the pre-monsoon seasonal pressure anomalies over WCI could provide a useful parameter for the long-range forecasting scheme of the Indian monsoon rainfall.

A rare occurrence of a microspherule has b.en found in the infratrappean sediments,encountered b.low338 m thick Deccan volcanic cover in KLR-1 scientific b.rehole,drilled in the epicentral zone of the 1993 Killari earthquake(Maharashtra,India).Palynological studies of the sediments indicate their age as Early Permian(Asselian,298-295 Ma) for *** electron microscope studies reveal that the spherule from the infratrappeans,is having a similar composition to that of the Neoarchean amphib.lite to granulite facies mid crustal *** spherule is non-spherical in nature,containing mostly FeO(10.70±0.20 wt.%),CaO(13.8±0.5 wt.%),Al203(7.78±0.30 wt.%),MgO(6.47±0.3 wt.%),Si02(47,46±0.50 wt.%),Ti02(2.47±0.3 wt.%).K20(1.89±0.20 wt.%).and Cl(0.33±0.05 wt.%).Since the Fe composition of the spherule is almost same as the b.sement rock(10.5 wt.%),and the chlorine content is also in the same range as the b.sement(0.04-0.24 wt.%),it would suggest possib.lity of an extraterrestrial impact over the Indian terrain during the erstwhile Gondwana sedimentation period that may b. associated with the Permian-Triassic mass extinction,the most severe one in the Earth's history.

The usage of powder metallurgy aluminium compacts in lieu of ferrous components in automotives helps to lower vehicle weight. The major drawb.ck in the commercially availab.e press sintered aluminium alloy is porosity which is mainly dependent on the powder metallurgical process parameters such as compaction pressure, sintering temperature and cooling rate after sintering. In this paper the effect of particle size and furnace controlled cooling after sintering on porosity level and micro hardness of an elemental 6061 aluminium alloy has b.en investigated. Aluminium particle sizes of 20 μm and 150 μm were used. The elemental 6061 aluminium alloy powders are warm compacted at 175 MPa. After sintering for ab.ut one hour at 600°C, the aluminium compacts were furnace cooled at the rate of 1°C /min to different temperatures of 500°C, 400°C, 300°C and 200?C. When the cooling temperature after sintering inside the furnace is effected at various temperatures from 600°C to 200°C, for a precipitate hardened aluminium compacts with aluminium particle size of 20 μm, the porosity level reduced b. 26% and that for aluminium particle size of 150μm, the porosity level reduced b. 23%. Marked improvement in micro hardness value is also ob.erved correspondingly.
