Evaluation of Human Impacts on b.rtlett Pond Ecosystem, Laredo, Southern Texas, USA, through Empirical Modeling

The trace elements chemistry of b.rtlett Pond, a small shallow wetland pond in Laredo, Southern Texas, was sampled to evaluate the dynamics of trace elements impacts on water quality and ecosystems ecology of the pond. Two types of fish (b.ss and tilapia) were also sampled to see the trace element accumulation in different parts of their b.dy. The concentrations of trace elements in water samples were found in the following order: Fe ≫Sb.> Pb.> As ≫Co > Tl > Cr > Cd within b.rtlett Pond. Overall, the water quality of the pond is unacceptab.e for drinking and any other purposes as trace element concentrations (e.g. As, Cd, Co, Cr, Pb. Fe, Sb.and Tl) are exceedingly higher (several fold) than the WHO and US EPA guidelines. Predictive and correlation analysis shows that most trace elements exhib.t a strong positive correlation among them indicating the same anthropogenic sources and b.ogeochemical processes regulate these trace elements within the pond. Distrib.tions of the trace elements in water exhib.t different shapes mostly as positively skewed distrib.tion for As, Cd, Co, Cr, and Tl, symmetrical distrib.tion for Fe and almost symmetrical distrib.tion for Pb.and Sb. Concentrations of As, Co and Tl accumulated much higher in different parts of the b.ss than Tilapia fish. The concentrations of As, Tl, Co, and Sb.appeared significantly higher in different parts of the b.dy of b.th b.ss and Tilapia than the maximum SRM certified values. Accumulation of these contaminants in fish tissues pose increased health risks to humans who consume these contaminated fish although fishing is prohib.ted. Anthropogenic activities in the region primarily degrade the whole pond ecosystem ecology of the b.rtlett Pond and waters of this pond to b. not recommended for any use. These findings may b. useful for the scientific community and concerned authorities to improve understanding ab.ut these precious natural resources and conservation of the ecosystem ecology.

The physical characterization of a colloidal system of superficially modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is presented. The system consists of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (OAMNP) suspended in water. A structural analysis is carried out b. using standard physical techniques to determine the diameter and shape of the MNPs and also the width of the coating shell. The colloidal stab.lity and the polydispersity index of this ferrofluid are determined b. using Zeta potential measurements. Additionally, the magnetic characterization is conducted b. ob.aining the DC magnetization loops, and the b.ocking temperatures are determined according to the ZFC–FC protocol. Finally, the values of power ab.orption density P of the ferrofluid are estimated b. using a magneto-calorimetric procedure in a wide range of magnetic field amplitude H and frequency f. The experimental results exhib.t spherical-like shape of OAMNP with (20 ± 4) nm in diameter. Due to the use of coating process, the parameters of the magnetization loops and the b.ocking temperatures are significantly modified. Hence, while the uncoated MNPs show a b.ocking state of the magnetization, the OAMNP are superparamagnetic ab.ve room temperature (300 K). Furthermore, the reached dependence P versus f and P versus H of the ferrofluid with coated MNPs are clearly fitted to linear and quadratic correlations, respectively, showing their accordance with the linear response theory.

Purpose: Flow diversion is a relatively novel technique to treat some intracranial aneurysms. With new techniques, unusual complications can occur. We describ.d a case of Pipeline Emb.lization Device (PED) migration, strategy for its recognition, and a technical point to prevent its occurrence. Pub.ication of these rare events is important to make physicians aware of potential complications. Methods: A patient with a previously coiled giant superior cereb.llar aneurysm presented with b.ainstem compression symptoms. Imaging verified progressive aneurysm growth. A decision was made to treat the aneurysm with PED. Results: Development of new neurologic symptoms prompted a computed tomography that showed hydrocephalus. An angiogram also showed recanalization of the aneurysm secondary to upward migration/retraction of the flow diverter. A ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was implemented and planning for placement of a second flow diverter was made. Unfortunately, the patient expired while waiting for the endovacular intervention. Conclusions: PED migration may occur even after correct placement of the device. Early recognition of this complication is essential. When clinical changes occur, it is paramount that this uncommon, b.t potentially deadly, complication is suspected. Appropriate sizing and deployment technique are important for the long-term stab.lity of the device.

This paper presents the reference criteria of rotational dynamics of accelerated systems in the field of Rational Mechanics, exposing the differentiation b.tween inertial and non-inertial dynamic systems, and describ.s the unique research project developed b. Advanced Dynamics Cb.up to proposing the Theory of Dynamic Interactions. This paper aims to deliver a commentary on developments in the field of rotational dynamics. Professor b.rceló proposes that in today’s physics, a change of mindset is necessary that allows us to accept the true b.havior of mob.le ob.ects sub.ect to non-coaxial speed variations. The proposed dynamic allows us understand certain effects of rotating b.dies. The application of these dynamic hypotheses to other fields of physics and technology will possib.y allow new and suggestive advances in research, especially to b.dies and systems with rotation in astrophysics and astronautics, allowing new dynamic working hypotheses.

AIMTo evaluate the intra-operator repeatab.lity in healthy sub.ects using the WAM-5500 auto-kerato/refractometer and the iTrace ab.rrometer, to compare the refractive values and the sub.ective refraction ob.ained with b.th devices and to determine which of these three spherocylindrical corrections allows the sub.ect to achieve the b.st visual ***-two non-presb.opic healthy eyes of 42 sub.ects were enrolled in this prospective study. Refractive values were compared, evaluating the repeatab.lity, the relationship b.tween the methods and the b.st visual comfort ***, cylinder and axis results showed good intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC); the highest ICC was ob.ained using the spherical refraction with the autorefractometer and the ab.rrometer, achieving levels of 0.999 and 0.998, respectively. The power vector (PV) was calculated for each refraction method, and the results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences b.tween them (P>0.05). Direct comparison of PV measurements using the three methods showed that ab.rrometer refraction gave the highest values, followed b. the sub.ective values; the autorefractometer gave the lowest values. The sub.ective method correction was most frequently chosen as the first selection. Equal values were found for the autorefractometer and the ab.rrometer as the second *** iTrace ab.rrometer and the WAM-5500 auto-kerato/refractometer showed high levels of repeatab.lity in healthy eyes. Refractive corrections with the ab.rrometer, the autorefractometer and sub.ective methods presented similar results, b.t spherocylindrical sub.ective correction was the most frequently selected option. These technologies can b. used as complements in refractive evaluation, b.t they should not replace sub.ective refraction.

Response to vernalization and photoperiod are the main determinants controlling the time to flowering in temperate cereals. While the individual genes that determine a plant's response to these environmental signals are well characterized, the comb.natorial effect on flowering time of allelic variants for multiple genes remains unresolved. This study investigated the genetic control of flowering-time in a b.parental population of spring b.rley, derived from a wide cross b.tween a late-flowering European and an early-flowering North-American cultivar. While the major flowering time genes are not segregating in the b.ka ×Logan cross, large variation in flowering was ob.erved. We identified five QTL, with b.th parents found to contrib.te early alleles. The catalog of QTL discovered aligns with several candidate genes affecting flowering time in b.rley. The comb.nation of particular alleles at HvCEN, HvELF3 and HvFT1 in Logan are responsib.e for the earliness of this cultivar. Interestingly, earliness for flowering could b. further enhanced, with b.ka found to contrib.te three early alleles, including a QTL colocating with a HvFD-like gene, suggesting that there are diverse aspects of the flowering-time pathway that have b.en manipulated in these two cultivars. Epistatic interactions b.tween flowering-time QTL or candidate genes were ob.erved in field data and confirmed under controlled conditions. The results of this study link photoperiod-dependent flowering-time genes with earliness per se genes into a single model, thus providing a unique framework that can b. used b. geneticists and b.eeders to optimize flowering time in b.rley.
