Apples are rich sources of bioactive compounds(e.g.,anthocyanins,flavanols,flavonols,and antioxidant activity),and micronutrients(e.g.,vitamins,zinc,and iron)that are essential for normal human body *** compounds in apples help to regulate immune responses and protect against chronic diseases by neutralizing and eliminating cellular free *** fruit production is ranked second globally,which has economic *** conventional industry practice of using chlorine-based chemical disinfectants has been discouraged based on public health concerns,and by strict policies limiting chemical residues on fresh or minimally processed ready to eat ***,the aim of this review is to provide a critical assessment on the status of emerging non-thermal technologies such as cold plasma,pulsed electric fields,ozone,electrolyzed water,and edible coatings for the whole and minimally processed apple fruit *** influence of these non-thermal technologies on microbial decontamination,preservation of bioactive compounds,and overall quality of apples during storage is *** addition,based on extensive report on various studies about non-thermal technologies for *** review concluded that future investigations should focus on balancing the decontamination performance of these non-thermal technologies with the preservation of essential nutritional quality attributes,providing guidance for the apple fruit industry.

Neuroimmunology is emerging as a pivotal field,shedding light on the intricate dialogues between the central nervous system(CNS)and the immune *** exploration is particularly significant in understanding microglia,the CNS’s innate immune cells,beyond the conventional conflation of“neuroinflammation”and“microglial activation.”This conflation has clouded the true complexity of these processes,potentially stalling scientific progress and the development of new *** challenge the long-standing perspectives that have oversimplified these interactions,advocating for a deeper exploration of the dynamic relationship between neuroinflammation and microglial *** dissecting specific molecular pathways,we aim to illuminate their elaborate roles in neuroinflammatory responses,especially in the context of Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Here,neuroinflammation is not merely a passive observer or a direct antagonist but a complex agent in the disease’s *** article calls for a significant paradigm shift towards an integrative,multi-omics approach to *** such a comprehensive framework is crucial for advancing our understanding of neuroinflammatory conditions and paving the way for targeted therapeutic strategies for brain diseases.

The development of antibiotics is regarded as one of the most significant scientific advances in modern medicine. before the commercialization of antibiotics, infectious diseases were catastrophic throughout history [1]. Penicillin was used to treat serious infections in the 1940s, but unfortunately, with the introduction of antibiotics came the emergence of antibiotic resistance [2,3]. Evolved and adapted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are presently impacting community and healthcare systems across the globe [4].

Effects of a glyphosate-based herbicide on the oestrous cycle of rats

Relationship between sonographically measured median nerve cross-sectional area and presence of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic subjects

bACKGROUND Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus resulting from direct damage by hyperglycemia to the nerves and/or ischemia by microvascular injury to the endoneurial vessels which supply the nerves. Median nerve is one of the peripheral nerves commonly affected in diabetic neuropathy. The median nerve size has been studied in non-Nigerian diabetic populations. In attempt to contribute to existing literature, a study in a Nigerian population is *** To evaluate the cross-sectional area(CSA) of the median nerve using b-mode ultrasonography(USS) and the presence of peripheral neuropathy(PN) in a cohort of adult diabetic *** Demographic and anthropometric data of 85 adult diabetes mellitus(DM) and 85 age-and sex-matched apparently healthy control(HC) subjects were taken. A complete physical examination was performed on all study subjects to determine the presence of PN and modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument(MNSI) was used to grade its severity. Venous blood was taken from the study subjects for fasting lipid profile(FLP), fasting blood glucose(FbG) and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1 c) while their MN CSA was evaluated at a point 5 cm proximal to(5 cmCATL) and at the carpal tunnel(CATL) by high-resolution bmode USS. Data was analysed using SPSS version *** The mean MN CSA was significantly thicker in DM subjects compared to the HC at 5 cmCATL(P both sides. The presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) further increased the MN CSA at the CATL(P but not at 5 cmCATL(P > 0.05). However, the severity of DPN had no additional effect on MN CSA 5 cm proximal to and at the CATL. Studies on Human Intestinal Parasites in Refuse Dumps

This study investagated the data of the prevalence of intestinal parasites of human from September 2007 to July 2008 using faecal samples which were picked from refuse dump sites. A total of 2,050 stool samples picked and examined from five selected popular refuse dump sites in Ado-Ekiti. And Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and balantidium coli were mostly identified. The analysis of the infection shows that E. histolytica has a percentage prevalence of 65.5%, followed by G. lamblia with 42.5% and b. coli having 1.9%. Multiple infections of these parasites were also prevalent. There was a positive correlation （r=0.995, P〈0.05） between percentage prevalence of infection and home surroundings, waste, sewage disposal facilities and habits. Also, there was a significant difference （t=1 1.06, P〈0.05） in the prevalence of infections between location A and b. Probable ways of eliminating/controlling the disease are also highlighted.

This study focused on the development of thermophilic strain/s of a cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) compatible nitrogen fixing bacterium. A preliminary plant screening was carried out using some strains of tropical rhizobia and cowpea. Rhizobium species CWP G34A that formed Fix+ nodules repeatedly was selected for further studies. First, it was tested for growth at high temperatures of 40 to 55oC at 5oC interval with 28oC as the control temperature. Mutagenesis was conducted on the bacterium with ethylmethane sulphonate (EMS). The wildtype and mutants generated were tested for high temperature tolerance by growing them individually in nutrient broth at 60oC for 24 hours. Optical density (670 nm) was read before and after incubation. The mutants were grouped into classes based on percentage difference in OD values obtained before and after exposure to 60oC. Rhizobium species CWP G34A produced functional pink nodules on the cowpea consistently in three different plant tests. There was no growth at all the temperatures tested except at 28oC and 40oC after 24 hours of incubation. It grew better at former (51 × 1010 Cfu/ml) than latter (11 Cfu/ml) temperature. Like the parental strain, all the mutants but one, did not grow after exposure to 60oC. Sixty degree centigrade caused various reductions in optical density (OD) values of the variants. Eleven classes of the mutants were formed with membership percentage ranging from 1 to 22%. Class 1 contains only one member while class 11 has the highest mutant population of 22% with OD difference of 0 to 10% and –90 to –100% respectively. The high percentage reduction in the OD of variants in class 11 is similar to that of the unmutated cells (–94.56%). The only mutant that survived the 60oC and grew was MU70. An increase of 1.67% in OD was obtained for MU70. Mutant MU70 therefore appeared a promising strain that can be further tested to inoculate cowpea in the dry and warm season for increased nitrogen fixation. This will provide en
