Vegetation-environment relationship in Pinus wallichiana forests of the Swat Hindukush range of Pakistan

Understanding the influence of environmental variables on the spatial distribution of ecological communities is essential to predict the response of vegetation to various environmental *** theory suggests that multiple environmental factors shape local species assemblages and should influence the various components of community structure and composition in different *** study aimed to classify Pinus wallichiana dominated forests in the Swat Hindukush range mountains to understand the relative influence of multiple environmental filters on its composition and *** forests represent the most typical of the species distribution in northern Pakistan and were not subjected to any phytosociological *** this purpose,thirty forest stands,spanning a wide range of physical habitats were sampled using 10 x 10 m plots and the importance value index was *** floristic and environmental data were subjected to Ward’s agglomerative cluster analysis for objective classification and ordinated with NMS ordination for pattern description and testing the vegetation-environmental *** floristically and ecologically distinct communities were recognized along the topographic gradient(elevation,r=0.377;slope,r=0.5548) coupled with soil physical(clay,r=0.2782;silt,r=0.3225) and chemical properties(pH,r=0.4975;lime,r=3982).An elevation gradient of 100 m separated the low(Pinus wallichiana-Quercus dilatata community)and middle elevations forest stands(*** pure population) from the highland population type(Pinus wallichiana-Cedrus deodara community).The floristics and structure of these forest types respond directly or indirectly to topographic and soil variables which were evidenced from the floristic composition,species richness,and community *** characteristics of the communities changed from heterogenous,dense stands to sparsely dispersed conifers,broadleaved-evergreen,and deciduous vegetation types along

A locality-based replication manager for data cloud

Efficient data management is a key issue for environments distributed on a large scale such as the data cloud. This can be taken into account by replicating the data. The replication of data reduces the time of service and the delay in availability, increases the availability, and optimizes the distribution of load in the system. It is worth mentioning, however, that with the replication of data, the use of resources and energy increases due to the storing of copies of the data. We suggest a replication manager that decreases the cost of using resources, energy, and the delay in the system, and also increases the availability of the system. To reach this aim, the suggested replication manager, called the locality replication manager （LRM）, works by using two important algorithms that use the physical adjacency feature of blocks. In addition, a set of simulations are reported to show that LRM can be a suitable option for distributed systems as it uses less energy and resources, optimizes the distribution of load, and has more availability and less delay.

Application of dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) plasma packed with glass and ceramic pellets for SO_2 removal at ambient temperature: optimization and modeling using response surface methodology

Air pollution is a major health problem in developing countries and has adverse effects on human health and the environment. Non-thermal plasma is an effective air pollution treatment technology. In this research, the performance of a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) plasma reactor packed with glass and ceramic pellets was evaluated in the removal of SO_2 as a major air pollutant from air in ambient temperature. The response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effect of three key parameters(concentration of gas, gas flow rate, and voltage) as well as their simultaneous effects and interactions on the SO2 removal process. Reduced cubic models were derived to predict the SO_2 removal efficiency(RE) and energy yield(EY). Analysis of variance results showed that the packed-bed reactors(PBRs) studied were more energy efficient and had a high SO2 RE which was at least four times more than that of the non-packed reactor. Moreover, the results showed that the performance of ceramic pellets was better than that of glass pellets in PBRs. This may be due to the porous surface of ceramic pellets which allows the formation of microdischarges in the fine cavities of a porous surface when placed in a plasma discharge zone. The maximum SO_2 RE and EY were obtained at 94% and 0.81 g kWh^(-1),respectively under the optimal conditions of a concentration of gas of 750 ppm, a gas flow rate of 2lmin^(-1), and a voltage of 18 kV, which were achieved by the DBD plasma packed with ceramic pellets. Finally, the results of the model's predictions and the experiments showed good agreement.

Indication of pyrethroid resistance in the main malaria vector Anopheles stephensi from Iran

ObjectiveTo investiagte insecticide resistance in target species for better insecticide resistance managemnet in malaria control programs.MethodsThe status of insecticide resistance to different imagicides in Anopheles stephensi (An. stephensi) including DDT 4%, lambdacyhalothrin 0.50%, deltamethrin 0.05%, permethrin 0.75%, cyfluthrin 0.15% and etofenprox 0.50% was performed according to WHO standard method.ResultsThe mortality rate to lambdacyhalothrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, etofenprox and DDT was (88.0±3.2), (92.0±2.7), (52.0±5.0), (96.0±2.2), (90.0±3.0) and (41.0±5.7) percent, respectively at diagnostic dose for one hour exposure time followed by 24 h recovery period.ConclusionsThese results showed first indication of pyrethroid resistance in An. stephensi in a malarious area, from southern Iran. There is widespread, multiple resistances in the country in An. stephensi to organochlorine and some report of tolerance to organophosphate insecticides and recently to pyrethroids. However, results of this paper will provide a clue for monitoring and mapping of insecticide resistance in the main malaria vector for implementation of any vector control.

Nonlinear fractional differential equations provide suitable models to describe real-world phenomena and many fractional derivatives are varying with time and *** present study considers the advanced and broad spectrum of the nonlinear(NL)variable-order fractional differential equation(VO-FDE)in sense of VO Caputo fractional derivative(CFD)to describe the physical *** VO-FDE transforms into an ordinary differential equation(ODE)and then solving by the modified(G/G)-expansion *** ac-curacy,the space-time VO fractional Korteweg-de Vries(KdV)equation is solved by the proposed method and obtained some new types of periodic wave,singular,and Kink exact *** newly obtained solutions confirmed that the proposed method is well-ordered and capable implement to find a class of NL-VO *** VO non-integer performance of the solutions is studied broadly by using 2D and 3D graphical *** results revealed that the NL VO-FDEs are highly active,functional and convenient in explaining the problems in scientific physics.

Antifungal, phytotoxic and hemagglutination activity of methanolic extracts of Ocimum basilicum

OBJECTIVE: To report some of the pharmacological features of the medicinal plant Ocimum ***: In the current studies, Antifungal activity of crude methanolic fraction of Ocimum basilicum was determined against eight pathogenic fungal strains using tube dilution assay. The methanolic fraction was also investigated for phytotoxic and hemagglutination ***: Of the eight strains investigated only Candida albicans and Curvilaria lunata were found to be least affected by plant extract while the rest were significantly inhibited. Moderate phytotoxic activity was observed against lemna minor. Hemagglutination activity showed absence of phytolectins and hence no agglutination of ***: The crude extract of Ocimum basilicum has significant properties against fungi and phytotoxic substances.

Future of Abies pindrow in Swat district,northern Pakistan

Swat district is a biodiversity hub of Pakistan. The plant species, especially trees, in the Swat District are exposed to extinction threat from global climate change. Maximum entropy （MaxEnt） modelling of species distribution, using HADCM3 A2a global climate change scenario, pre-dicted a considerable change in the future distribution ofAbies pindrow （Royle ex ***） Royle. AUC （area under the curve）values of 0.972 and 0.983 were significant for the present and future distribution models of the species, respectively. It is clear that bioclimatic variables such as the mean temperature of the warmest quarter （bio_10） and the annual temperature range （bio_7） contribute significantly to the model and thus affect the predicted distribution and density of the species. The future model predicts that by the year 2080 population density will have decreased significantly. The highest density of the species is recorded in the eastern and western borders of the Valley in the areas of Sulatanr and Mankial. The changes in density and distribution of the species can have considerable impact, not only on the tree species itself, but on the associated subflora as well.

Evaluation of antileishmanial,antibacterial and brine shrimp cytotoxic potential of crude methanolic extract of Herb Ocimum basilicum(Lamiacea)

OBJECTIVE:To collect and screen for ethnopharmacological properties(antileishmanial,antibacterial and brine lethality assays) of medicinal plant Ocimum basilicum from Peshawar region(34.008 latitude and 71.57 altitudes).METHODS:In the present study a general antileishmanial activity against Leishmania tropica strain was carried *** antibacterial potential of the plant was performed against 06 gram positive and 06 gram negative *** shrimp cytotoxicity assay at different concentrations were ***:The anti-promastigotes profile of the plant showed good antileishmanial activity exhibited LC_(50) value 21.67 μg/*** result for gram positive antibacterial activity revealed that the *** leaves extract possesses significant inhibitory activity at highest two concentrations ranging from20.66 ± 0.31 to 31.86 ± 0.80 for Clostridium perfringens type C and Bacillus subtitilis,respectively,as compared to the gentamycin(27.36 ± 0.55 and21.80 ± 0.72,respectively).For gram negative bacteria good activity was observed.A highest zone of inhibition was recorded for Pseudomonas aeroginosa(28.83 ± 0.28) atthe highest concentration(10 mg/mL).The LC_(50) value obtained for brine shrimp lethality assay was 91.56 μg/***:The herb basil possesses effective cidal activities which make this plant a good candidate for the isolation of antiprotozoal and antibacterial compounds which may lead to the development of novel drug.
