An examination of predictive markers for successful sperm extraction procedures:a linear model and systematic review

The authors performed a comprehensive review of current literature to create a model comparing commonly evaluated variables in male factor infertility,for example,follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),testicular volume(TV),and testosterone(T),to better predict sperm retrieval rate(SRR).Twenty-nine studies were included,9 with data on conventional testicular sperm extraction(cTESE)for a total of 1227 patients and 20 studies including data on microdissection testicular sperm extraction(mTESE)for a total of 4760 patients.A weighted-means value of SRR,FSH,T,and TV was created,and a weighted linear regression was then used to describe associations among SRR,type of procedure,FSH,T,and *** this study,weighted-means values demonstrated mTESE to be superior to cTESE with an SRR of 51.9%vs 40.1%.Multiple weighted linear regressions were created to describe associations among SRR,procedure type,FSH,T,and *** models showed that for every 1.19 mIU ml^(−1)increase in FSH,there would be a significant decrease in SRR by 1.0%.Seeking to create a more clinically relevant model,FSH values were then divided into normal,moderate elevation,and significant elevation categories(FSH20 mIU ml^(−1),respectively).For an index patient undergoing cTESE,the retrieval rates would be 57.1%,44.3%,and 31.2%for values normal,moderately elevated,and significantly elevated,*** conclusion,in a large meta-analysis,mTESE was shown to be more successful than cTESE for sperm *** has an inverse relationship to SRR in retrieval techniques and can alone be predictive of cTESE SRR.

Selective deletion of the soluble Colony-Stimulating Factor 1 isoform in vivo prevents estrogen-deficiency bone loss in mice

Neutralizing CSF1 in vivo completely prevents ovariectomy （OVX）-induced bone loss in mice. There are two isoforms of CSF1, soluble （sCSF1）, and membrane-bound （mCSF1）, but their individual biological functions are unclear. It had been previously reported that mCSF1 knockout （K/O） and wild type （Wt） female mice experience the same degree of bone loss following OVX. In Wt mice the expression of sCSF1 was elevated fourfold in skeletal tissue following OVX while expression of mCSF1 was unchanged. To examine the role of sCSF1 in OVX-induced bone loss, mice were engineered in which sCSF1 was not expressed but expression of mCSF1 was unaffected （sCSF1 K/O）. Isoform-specific reverse transcription PCR confirmed the absence of transcripts for sCSF1 in bone tissue isolated from these animals and no circulating CSF1 was detected by ELISA. Surprisingly, there were no significant differences in bone mineral density （BMD） between sCSF1 K/O mice and Wt controls as assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and micro-CT. However, one month after OVX, femoral, spinal and total BMD had declined by 11.2%, 8.9%, and 8.7% respectively in OVX-Wt animals as compared to Sham-OVX. In contrast OVX sCSF1 K/O mice showed changes of ＋0.1%, - 2.4%, and ＋2.3% at the same 3 sites compared to Sham-OVX sCSF1 K/O mice. These data indicate important non-redundant functions for the two isoforms of CSF1 and suggest that sCSF1, but not mCSF1, plays a key role in estrogen-deficiency bone loss.

Serelaxin increases the antifibrotic action of rosiglitazone in a model of hepatic fibrosis

To determine the effect of combined serelaxin and rosiglitazone treatment on established hepatic *** fibrosis was induced in mice by carbon tetrachloride administration for 6 wk, or vehicle alone (nonfibrotic mice). For the final 2 wk, mice were treated with rosiglitazone, serelaxin, or both rosiglitazone and serelaxin. Serum liver enzymes and relaxin levels were determined by standard methods. The degree of liver collagen content was determined by histology and immunohistochemistry. Expression of type I collagen was determined by quantitative PCR. Activation of hepatic stellate cells was assessed by alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) levels. Liver peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α) was determined by Western *** of mice with CCl4 resulted in hepatic fibrosis as evidenced by increased liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST), and increased liver collagen and SMA. Monotherapy with either serelaxin or rosiglitazone for 2 wk was generally without effect. In contrast, the combination of serelaxin and rosiglitazone resulted in significantly improved ALT levels (P < 0.05). Total liver collagen content as determined by Sirius red staining revealed that only combination treatment was effective in reducing total liver collagen (P < 0.05). These results were supported by immunohistochemistry for type I collagen, in which only combination treatment reduced fibrillar collagen levels (P < 0.05). The level of hepatic stellate cell activation was modestly, but significantly, reduced by serelaxin treatment alone, but combination treatment resulted in significantly lower SMA levels. Finally, while hepatic fibrosis reduced liver PGC1α levels, the combination of serelaxin and rosiglitazone resulted in restoration of PGC1α protein *** combination of serelaxin and rosiglitazone treatment for 2 wk was effective in significantly reducing established hepatic fibrosis, providing a potential

Fluorite(CaF_(2))is a common hydrothermal mineral,which precipitates from fluorine-rich fluids with an exceptional capacity to transport metals and Rare Earth Elements(REEs).Hence,the ability to date fluorite has important implications for understanding the timing of metal transport in hydrothermal *** we present,for the first time,fluorite Lu-Hf dates from fluorite-carbonate veins from the Olympic Cu-Au Province in South *** fluorite dates were obtained in situ using the recently developed LA-ICP-MS/MS Lu-Hf dating method.A fluorite-calcite age of 1588±19 Ma was obtained for the Torrens Dam prospect,consistent with the timing of the formation of the nearby Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper gold Breccia *** in the overlying Neoproterozoic successions were dated at 502±14 Ma,indicating a temporal link between Cu-sulphide remobilisation and the Delamerian ***,we present a multi-session reproducible date for magmatic fluorite from a monzogranite in the Pilbara Craton(Lu-Hf age of 2866±19 Ma).This age is consistent with a garnet Lu-Hf age from the same sample(2850±12 Ma)and holds potential to be developed into a secondary reference material for future fluorite Lu-Hf dating.

A Note on the Relationship Between Temperature and Water Vapor over Oceans, Including Sea Surface Temperature Effects

An ideal and simple formulation is successfully derived that well represents a quasi-linear relationship found between the domain-averaged water vapor, Q （ram）, and temperature, T （K）, fields for the three tropical oceans （i.e., the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans） based on eleven GEOS-3 [Goddard Earth Observing System （EOS） Version-3] global re-analysis monthly products. A Q - T distribution analysis is also performed for the tropical and extra-tropical regions based on in-situ sounding data and numerical simulations [GEOS-3 and the Goddard Cumulus Ensemble （GCE） model]. A similar positively correlated Q - T distribution is found over the entire oceanic and tropical regions; however, Q increases faster with T for the former region. It is suspected that the tropical oceans may possess a moister boundary layer than the Tropics. The oceanic regime falls within the lower bound of the tropical regime embedded in a global, curvilinear Q - T relationship. A positive correlation is also found between T and sea surface temperature （SST）; however, for one degree of increase in T, SST is found to increase 1.1 degrees for a warmer ocean, which is slightly less than an increase of 1.25 degrees for a colder ocean. This seemingly indicates that more （less） heat is needed for an open ocean to maintain an air mass above it with a same degree of temperature rise during a colder （warmer） season [or in a colder （warmer） region]. Q and SST are also found to be positively correlated. Relative humidity （RH） exhibits similar behaviors for oceanic and tropical regions. RH increases with increasing SST and T over oceans, while it increases with increasing T in the Tropics. RH, however, decreases with increasing temperature in the extratropics. It is suspected that the tropical and oceanic regions may possess a moister local boundary layer than the extratropics so that a faster moisture increase than a saturated moisture increase is favored for the former regions. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of most of the species of Perezia reveals that,as traditionally defined,the genus is not monophyletic with two species more closely related to Nassauvia than to *** addition,our results show that Burkartia(Perezia) lanigera is related to Acourtia and is the only member of that clade in South *** remaining species are monophyletic and show a pattern of an early split between a western temperate and an eastern subtropical clade of *** the western clade,the phylogeny indicates a pattern of diversification that proceeded from southern,comparatively low-elevation habitats to southern high-elevation habitats,and ultimately into more northern high-elevation *** most derived clades are found in the high central Andes,where significant radiation has occurred.

Use of a Public Fishing Area Determined by Vehicle Counters with Verification by Trail Cameras

This study was performed in order to determine visitation at remote areas that would be unaffordable due to logistic reasons. Four TrafxTM vehicle counters, each programmed with different settings, were placed along the lone access road to remotely sense the daily use activities and count accuracy at the New Underwood Lake Public Water Access Area. Use was corroborated during daylight hours with game cameras. Data was stratified between weekdays/weekends due to differences between the two periods. Two counter settings, threshold and delay, were best when set at a value of 8, but a value of 16 for delay provided almost equal results. Overall, there were 38 counts of use per day for a total of 2318 over the 61 day period. This study demonstrated how vehicle counters, in combination with game cameras for verification, can aid managers for determining use in remote access areas. Future work may lead to identifying details for producing a surrogate to traditional angler use surveys.
