Effects of Tillage Practices and Land Use Management on Soil Aggregates and Soil Organic Carbon in the North Appalachian Region,USA

Promoting soil carbon sequestration in agricultural land is one of the viable strategies to decelerate the observed climate changes.However,soil physical disturbances have aggravated the soil degradation process by accelerating erosion.Thus,reducing the magnitude and intensity of soil physical disturbance through appropriate farming/agricultural systems is essential to management of soil carbon sink capacity of agricultural lands.Four sites of different land use types/tillage practices,i) nc-till(NT) corn(Zea mays L.)(NTC),ii) conventional till(CT) corn(CTC),iii) pastureland(PL),and iv) native forest(NF),were selected at the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed Station,Ohio,USA to assess the impact of NT farming on soil aggregate indices including water-stable aggregation,mean weight diameter(MWD) and geometric mean diameter(GMD),and soil organic carbon and total nitrogen contents.The NTC plots received cow manure additions(about 15 t ha^(-1)) every other year.The CTC plots involved disking and chisel ploughing and liquid fertilizer application(110 L ha^(-1)).The results showed that both water-stable aggregation and MWD were greater in soil for NTC than for CTC.In the 0-10 cm soil layer,the > 4.75-mm size fraction dominated NTC and was 46%more than that for CTC,whereas the < 0.25-mm size fraction was 380%more for CTC than for NTC.The values of both MWD and GMD in soil for NTC(2.17 mm and 1.19 mm,respectively) were higher than those for CTC(1.47 and 0.72 mm,respectively) in the 0-10 cm soil layer.Macroaggregates contained 6%-42%and 13%-43%higher organic carbon and total nitrogen contents,respectively,than microaggregates in soil for all sites.Macroaggregates in soil for NTC contained 40%more organic carbon and total nitrogen over microaggregates in soil for CTC.Therefore,a higher proportion of microaggregates with lower organic carbon contents created a carbon-depleted environment for CTC.In contrast,soil for NTC had more aggregation and contained higher organic carbon content within water-stable aggregates.Th

Culm characteristics and volume-weight relationship of a forest bamboo(Melocanna baccifera(Roxb.) Kurz) from northeast India

Culm characteristics of Melocanna baccifera, locally ＇muli＇, culms at five different culm ages of 11 girth classes （5-6 to 15-16 cm） were studied from Cachar Dis- trict of southern Assam, northeast India. We recorded internode length, internode diameter, number of internodes per culm, total culm height, total culm green weight and total culm volume of all five culm age classes. Data were gathered on 165 culms, each culm age class containing 33 culms with 3 culms per girth class. Culm height ranged from 3.2 to 15.3 m with highest mean of 9.15 m （in threeyear old culms） and maximum culm height was recorded in four-year old culms. Highest mean and maximum internode length （27.45 and 54.2 cm, respectively）, internode diameter （3.12 and 4.75 cm, respectively） and total culm green weight （5.42 and 12.87 kg/culm, respectively） were recorded in three-year old culms and lowest in current-year culms. Best fitted regression models for all parameters were developed. Significant linear relationships between culm green weight and culm solid volume were documented for all five culm age classes. Their corresponding best-fit regression models were also developed.

Aboveground biomass and carbon stock in the largest sacred grove of Manipur,Northeast India

Aboveground biomass and carbon stock in the largest sacred grove of Manipur was estimated for trees with diameter [10 cm at 1.37 m height.The aboveground biomass,carbon stock,tree density and basal area of the sacred grove ranged from 962.94 to 1130.79 Mg ha;,481.47 to 565.40 Mg ha;C,1240 to 1320 stem ha;and79.43 to 90.64 m;ha;,respectively.Trees in diameter class of 30–40 cm contributed the highest proportion of aboveground biomass（22.50–33.73%）.The aboveground biomass and carbon stock in research area were higher than reported for many tropical and temperate forests,suggesting a role of spiritual forest conservation for carbon sink management.

Population status and regeneration of a tropical clumping bamboo Schizostachyum dullooa under two management regimes

Schizostachyum dullooa （Gamble） Majumder ＇dolu bamboo＇ is a thin walled sympodial moderate sized to large tufted bamboo, dominant in the successional fallows of northeast India. The impact of resource management on productivity and sustainability of the species was evaluated by investigating the population status and regeneration in Cachar tropical semi evergreen forest under private property resource management （PPRM） and common property resource management （CPRM） regimes. Population status revealed current-year, one-year, two-year and three-year-old culms contribute 54%, 24%, 16% and 6% of the total culms per clump, respectively, under PPRM. Three-year-old culms were absent in CPRM and population status was thus represented by current year （83%）, one-year （16%） and two-year （1%） old culms. Net change, rate of change and % gain in population for different age classes showed the prevalence of management practices under CPRM was unscientific. Efficiency of new culm production per clump used as an index of regeneration was 69.7% in PPRM and 59.88% in CPRM. New culms produced under CPRM were small and thin. We conclude that CPRM is inappropriate for a long term economic and ecological sustainability of the species and alternative management protocols are needed for conservation of the species.

Development and evaluation of robust tree biomass equations for rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations in India

Background： In India, rubber（Hevea brasiliensis） plantations cover -0.8 million ha of land, emphasizing its significant role in the Earth＇s carbon dynamics. Therefore, it is important to estimate the biomass stocks of plantations precisely in the context of carbon management. Previous studies in India have focused on development of allometric equations for estimating aboveground biomass（AGB） through harvesting younger trees（up to 14 yr）only or on studies with small sample sizes without assessing model bias. The objective of this study was to develop biomass estimation models for different tree components in rubber plantations and assess model predictive performance at the stand level.Methods： A total of 67 trees were harvested from plantations of different ages（6, 15, 27 and 34 yr） in North East India and their diameter at 200 cm（D）, height and dry weights of different tree components were recorded. The data were used for evaluation of H-D and biomass estimation models at the stand level.Results： The Michaelis-Menten function was found to be the most appropriate model for estimating tree height among 10 commonly used H-D models. For estimation of AGB and coarse root biomass, a model that involves tree volume（i.e. D2 H） was found to provide better prediction than either D or H alone or a model that combines H, D and stand density. The estimated AGB varied from 28 Mg·ha-（-1） in 6 yr. old plantation to 169 Mg·ha-（-1） in 34 yr. old plantations.The coarse root biomass was estimated at 4 Mg·ha-（-1） for 6 yr. old plantation and 12 Mg·ha-（-1） for 34 yr. old stands.Conclusions： It is concluded that models involving tree volume are more appropriate for regional level biomass estimation than simple power-law models for individual stands. We recommend that the power-law model should not be used for estimation of AGB in plantations at different growth stages because power-law parameters can be biased due to data truncation.

Background and Aims: Lifestyle (exercise and dietary) modification is the mainstay of treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, there is paucity of data on effect of intensity of exercise in management of NAFLD, and we aimed to study the effect of variable intensities of exercise on NAFLD. Methods: The study was performed in the Department of Gastroenterology of the SCB Medical Col-lege, Cuttack and the Biju Patnaik State Police Academy, Bhu-baneswar. The subjects were police trainees [18 in a moderate intensity exercise group (MIG) and 19 in a low in-tensity exercise group (LIG)] recruited for a 6-month physical training course (261.8 Kcalorie, 3.6 metabolic equivalent in MIG and 153.6 Kcalorie, 2.1 metabolic equivalent in LIG). NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography, with exclusion of all secondary causes of steatosis. All participants were eval-uated by anthropometry (weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference), assessed for blood pressure and biochemical parameters (blood glucose, liver function test, lipid profile, serum insulin), and subjected to transabdo-minal ultrasonography before and after 6 months of physical training, and the results were compared. Results: Both the groups had similar BMI, fasting plasma glucose, AST, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, insulin, and homeostatic model as-sessment-insulin resistance (known as HOMA-IR) (p>0.05). However, subjects in the LIG were older and had lower alanine transaminase, higher triglycerides and lower high-density lip-oproteins than MIG subjects. There was a significant reduc-tion in BMI (27.0±2.1 to 26.8±2.0;p=0.001), fasting blood glucose (106.7±21.6 to 85.8±19.0;p<0.001), serum trigly-cerides (167.5±56.7 to 124.6±63.5;p=0.017), total choles-terol (216.8±29.2 to 196.7±26.6;p=0.037), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (134.6±21.4 to 130.5±21.9;p=0.010), serum aspartate transaminase (39.3±32.2 to 30.9±11.4;p<0.001), serum alanine transaminase (56.6 ±28.7 to 33.0±11.3;p<0.001) and HOMA-IR (2.63±2.66 to 1.70±2.59;p<0.001

Endosulfan Causes Neoplastic Changes in the Liver Cells of Mice

The rapid growth in global population continues to challenge the world’s ability to provide enough food. As one of the most crucial issues for human development, food production must increase to offset hunger and poverty as well as social unrest. To augment the yield of crops a variety of pesticides like Endosulfan, Rogor, Aldrin, Chlorpyrifos, etc. are being used liberally by the farmers. In the present investigation, Endosulfan was administered orally (daily) by gavage method to female Swiss albino mice group for 4 weeks @ 3.0 mg/kg b.w. After that, they were left for 6 months and then sacrificed and liver tissues were fixed for light microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopic study. The histopathological study of Endosulfan administered group liver showed hepatocytes with congestion in central vein with less dense cytoplasm, haemorrhaged bile duct, degenerated cytoplasm and central vein with vacuolations in sinusoidal spaces. Neoplastic changes in hepatocytes are the major finding of study. The ultrastuctural study revealed dilation in the nuclear pore complex and massive movement of cytoplasmic material from cytoplasm to the nucleus which is major finding which denotes neoplastic changes. Presence of abundant free lying polyribosomes in the cytoplasm, which denotes neoplastic changes in the cellis also one of theimportant finding observed. The present study thus deciphers that Endosulfan toxicity leads to onset of neoplasia thence carcinogenesis in liver cells in Swiss albino mice which is the novel finding in the field of toxicology.

This is a continuity of a series of taxonomic and phylogenetic papers on the fungi where materials were collected from many countries,examined and described.In addition to extensive morphological descriptions and appropriate asexual and sexual connections,DNA sequence data are also analysed from concatenated datasets to infer phylogenetic relationships and substantiate systematic positions of taxa within appropriate ranks.Wherever new species or combinations are proposed,we apply an integrative approach using morphological and molecular data as well as ecological features wherever applicable.Notes on 112 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper including Biatriosporaceae and Roussoellaceae,Didysimulans gen.nov.,81 new species,18 new host records and new country records,five reference specimens,two new combinations,and three sexual and asexual morph reports.The new species are Amanita cornelii,A.emodotrygon,Angustimassarina alni,A.arezzoensis,A.italica,A.lonicerae,A.premilcurensis,Ascochyta italica,A.rosae,Austroboletus appendiculatus,Barriopsis thailandica,Berkleasmium ariense,Calophoma petasitis,Camarosporium laburnicola,C.moricola,C.grisea,C.ossea,C.paraincrustata,Colletotrichum sambucicola,Coprinopsis cerkezii,Cytospora gelida,Dacrymyces chiangraiensis,Didysimulans italica,D.mezzanensis,Entodesmium italica,Entoloma magnum,Evlachovaea indica,Exophiala italica,Favolus gracilisporus,Femsjonia monospora,Fomitopsis flabellata,F.roseoalba,Gongronella brasiliensis,Helvella crispoides,Hermatomyces chiangmaiensis,H.chromolaenae,Hysterium centramurum,Inflatispora caryotae,Inocybe brunneosquamulosa,I.luteobrunnea,I.rubrobrunnea,Keissleriella cirsii,Lepiota cylindrocystidia,L.flavocarpa,L.maerimensis,Lophiotrema guttulata,Marasmius luculentus,Morenoina calamicola,Moelleriella thanathonensis,Mucor stercorarius,Myrmecridium fluviae,Myrothecium septentrionale,Neosetophoma garethjonesii,Nigrograna cangshanensis,Nodulosphaeria guttulatum,N.multiseptata,N.sambuci,Panus subfasciatus,Paraleptosphaeria padi,Paraphaeosphaeri
