We review the recent progress that have led to the development of porous materials based on cellulose nanostructures found in plants and other resources. In light of the properties that emerge from the chemistry, shape and structural control, we discuss some of the most promising uses of a plant-based material, nanocellulose, in regenerative medicine. Following a brief discussion about the fundamental aspects of self-assembly of nanocellulose precursors, we review the key strategies needed for material synthesis and to adjust the architecture of the materials (using three-dimensional printing, freeze-casted porous materials, and electrospinning) according to their uses in tissue engineering, artificial organs, controlled drug delivery and wound healing systems, among others. For this purpose, we map the structure-property-function relationships of nanocellulose-based porous materials and examine the course of actions that are required to translate innovation from the laboratory to industry. such efforts require attention to regulatory aspects and market pull. Finally, the key challenges and opportunities in this nascent field are critically reviewed.

NDRank: optimised parallel search for weather analogues

Global meteorology data are now widely used in various areas, but one of its applications, weather analogues, still require exhaustive searches on the whole historical data. We present two optimisations for the state-of-the-art weather analogue search algorithms: a parallelization and a heuristic search. The heuristic search (NDRank) limits of the final number of results and does initial searches on a lower resolution dataset to find candidates that, in the second phase, are locally validated. These optimisations were deployed in the Cloud and evaluated with ERA5 data from ECMWF. The proposed parallelization attained speedups close to optimal, and NDRank attains speedups higher than 4. NDRank can be applied to any parallel search, adding similar speedups. A substantial number of executions returned a set of analogues similar to the existing exhaustive search and most of the remaining results presented a numerical value difference lower than 0.1%. The results demonstrate that it is now possible to search for weather analogues in a faster way (even compared with parallel searches) with results with little to no error. Furthermore, NDRank can be applied to existing exhaustive searches, providing faster results with small reduction of the precision of the results.

Urban green spaces(UGs)are essential for human well-being,contributing towards quality of life and promoting social interactions and *** to recreational UGs is key to human well-being in urban ***,there is a lack of works focused on recreational UGs accessibility in cities from different countries,using different types of *** this work,we studied the accessibility to recreational UGs in Vilnius(Lithuania)and Coimbra(Portugal)through four transport modes(foot,bike,bus and car)within 5-and 10-minute *** results showed important differences between *** had higher accessibility to recreational UGs than Coimbra in all transport *** both cities,the accessibility was highest by car and lowest by ***,the percentage of population covered by 5-and 10-minute distance UGs accessibility in Vilnius is higher than in Coimbra,despite the lower population density in Vilnius.A large number of recreational UGs,their geographic distribution,the dispersed population pattern,and the location of several urbanizations near recreational UGs increased the inhabitant’s accessibility to recreational UGs in *** differences in accessibility between cities were mainly attributed to the large number of recreational UGs and higher road network density,cycleways and footways density,and bus lines in Vilnius,compared to *** work identified the areas where recreational UGs accessibility is difficult in using different transport modes and need to be improved in study *** is essential to support urban planners and increase cities’*** findings of this work will be important for the management of the studied urban areas.

This research investigates the soil conditioning effect of sugar cane fields with biochar produced from sugarcane *** influence on the physicochemical and microbiological conditions of the soil and the agronomic performance of sugarcane seedlings was *** this end,the biochar from sugarcane bagasse was produced by pyrolysis in a double drum oven and mixed with soil at rates of 0,1%,3%,and 5%(in weight).The experiment was installed in a greenhouse with two evaluation periods(30 days and 60 days)and five *** pot received a pre-sprouted cane seedling,and the analysis of colony-forming units(bacteria and fungi),physicochemical characteristics of the soil,and growth and development of sugarcane were performed per *** biochar showed a high fixed carbon content(72%)and a specific surface area estimated by the adsorption of methylene blue of 50 m2 g−***,its structure is porous and contains important nutrients(e.g.,CaO,K2O,and P2O5).In the periods evaluated,the applications of the 3%and 5%(in weight)rates of biochar reduced most of the soil fertility ***,the chemical analyses indicated that the sugarcane field soil collected already possessed high *** microbiota was influenced,but only the application of the 3%(in weight)rate at 60 days after planting showed a significant positive effect on the number of bacteria forming units,with an increase of approximately 385%.On the other hand,no significant positive effect on sugarcane development was ***,biochar application in high-fertility sugarcane plantation soil did not result in gains for sugarcane development in the periods evaluated.

Fluidized and vibrofluidized shallow beds of fresh leaves

The fluid dynamics behavior of shallow fluidized and vibrofluidized beds operating with fresh leaves was investigated with the aim of exploring drying applications in a modified conveyor belt （MCB） system, which may be operated in a fixed- or fluidized-bed mode. Leaves of the specimens Duranta repens, schinus molle, Coleus barbatus, Buxus sempervirens, and Bougainvillea spectabilis were tested with a range of sphericities from 0.063 to 0.213, bulk densities from 0.038 to 0.251 g/cm3, apparent densities from 0.52 to 0.97 g/cm3 and ratios of total surface area to volume from 21 to 224 cm-1. Fluidization characteristic curves were obtained by measuring pressure drops versus air velocity in a rectangular column of 0.20 m - 0.11 m cross section. It was not possible to reach real fluidized regimes with the leaves due to strongly non-homogeneous beds. Nevertheless, the characteristic curves allowed for the identification of a transition regime from fixed- to expanded-beds, and parameters such as air velocity and pressure drop obtained from the experimental data at the transition were reproducible for specimens with lower surface area or lower specific gravity （i.e., Duranta repens, schinus molle, and Bougainvillea spectabilis）. The transition velocity and pressure drop could not be predicted by the literature developed for estimat- ing minimum fluidization conditions. The use of vibration at dimensionless vibration parameters （Γ） of 0.5 and 1.0 helped to reduce channeling and decrease the transition velocities from fixed to expanded regimes although it did not affect the pressure drops after the bed expansion. The results suggest that drying fresh leaves using the MCB dryer operating in a fluidized mode would not be feasible because none of the materials investigated attained a high-quality fluidization. Operation of the MCB dryer may be pos- sible by alternating between the fixed and vibrofluidized modes. For the specimens tested, the drying should be performed in a range

A Use Case of Patent Classification Using deep Learning with Transfer Learning

Purpose:Patent classification is one of the areas in Intellectual Property Analytics(IPA),and a growing use case since the number of patent applications has been increasing *** propose using machine learning algorithms to classify Portuguese patents and evaluate the performance of transfer learning methodologies to solve this ***/methodology/approach:We applied three different approaches in this ***,we used a dataset available by INPI to explore traditional machine learning algorithms and ensemble *** preprocessing data by applying TF-IDF,FastText and Doc2Vec,the models were evaluated by cross-validation in 5 *** a second approach,we used two different Neural Networks architectures,a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)and a bi-directional Long short-Term Memory(BiLsTM).Finally,we used pre-trained BERT,DistilBERT,and ULMFiT models in the third ***:BERTTimbau,a BERT architecture model pre-trained on a large Portuguese corpus,presented the best results for the task,even though with a performance of only 4%superior to a LinearsVC model using TF-IDF feature *** limitations:The dataset was highly imbalanced,as usual in patent applications,so the classes with the lowest samples were expected to present the worst *** result happened in some cases,especially in classes with less than 60 training *** implications:Patent classification is challenging because of the hierarchical classification system,the context overlap,and the underrepresentation of the ***,the final model presented an acceptable performance given the size of the dataset and the task *** model can support the decision and improve the time by proposing a category in the second level of ICP,which is one of the critical phases of the grant patent ***/value:To our knowledge,the proposed models were never implemented for Portuguese patent classification.

Role of short chain fatty acids in gut health and possible therapeutic approaches in inflammatory bowel diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs) are characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and include Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s *** diseases are costly to health services,substantially reduce patients’ quality of life,and can lead to complications such as cancer and even *** include abdominal pain,stool bleeding,diarrhea,and weight *** treatment of these diseases is symptomatic,seeking disease *** intestine is colonized by several microorganisms,such as fungi,viruses,and bacteria,which constitute the intestinal microbiota(IM).IM bacteria promotes dietary fibers fermentation and produces short-chain fatty acids(sCFAs) that exert several beneficial effects on intestinal *** can bind to G protein-coupled receptors,such as GPR41 and GPR43,promoting improvements in the intestinal barrier,anti-inflammatory,and antioxidant ***,sCFAs could be a therapeutic tool for ***,the mechanisms involved in these beneficial effects of sCFAs remain poorly ***,this paper aims to provide a review addressing the main aspects of IBDs,and a more detailed sight of sCFAs,focusing on the main effects on different aspects of the intestine with an emphasis on IBDs.
