S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) acts as a methyl donor for methylation reactions and participates in the synthesis of glutathione. SAM is also a key metabolite that regulates hepatocyte growth, differentiation and death. Hepatic SAM levels are decreased in animal models of alcohol liver injury and in patients with alcohol liver disease or viral cirrhosis. This review describes the protection by SAM against alcohol and cytochrome P450 2E1-dependent cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo and evaluates mechanisms for this protection.

The synergistic study of Acacia Senegal (arabic gum) and Anacardium occidentale (cashew gum) combination in corrosion inhibition of mild steel was carried out to determine the inhibition efficiency of their combination. The gums were purified using standard methods and the blend prepared using the method as described by Femi – Oyewo et al. The blend was then used for corrosion study at two temperatures (303 K and 333 K) and the corrosion rates calculated. The adsorption process was found to satisfy the Langmuir isotherm and hence the sorption study reveals that the interaction is a physical one since the free energy of adsorption (ΔG^(o) ads kJ/mol) is given as (−16.47 and −15.61) kJ/mol at temperature T = 303 K and 333K accordingly. The GCMS technique was used to characterize the blend, five chemical compounds and their area percentage [6-O-(1-L-maloyl)-alpha-,beta-D-Glcp (veracylglucan A) (22.11%), 6-Octadecanoic acid (55.76%), Methylhexadecanoate (3.97%), 1-Pentadecane carboxylic acid (10.78%) and 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (7.38%)] were identified and subjected to computation corrosion study, the binding energy for the constituents of the blend on Fe surface were computed using Accelrys Material Studio and the mean values were found to be −327.097 kJ/mol, −446.943 kJ/mol, −602.826 kJ/mol, −608.625 kJ/mol and −693.749 kJ/mol respectively.

Chlorfenapyr, an insecticidal pyrrole, was applied to concrete arenas at concentrations of 1. 1, 0.825, 0.55, and 0.275 g of active ingredient [Ai]/m^2. Adult Tribolium castaneum （Herbst）, the red flour beetle, were exposed for 2, 4, or 8 h at each concentration, then removed and held either with or without food （wheat flour） for 7 days. Survival was assessed when the beetles were removed fi＇om the exposure arenas and daily during the post- exposure period. in the presence of food, survival was high regardless of concentration and the day on which post-treatment survival was assessed, but survival did decrease as the exposure period increased from 4 to 8 h. When the beetles were not given food after exposure, survival at each concentration and exposure period declined during the 1-week post- exposure assessments. This pattern of decrease could be described by linear and non-linear equations. Results show the presence of food material greatly compromised effectiveness of the insecticide, and emphasize the importance of cleaning and sanitation in conjunction with insecticide treatments.

A series of field trials were conducted in a commercial food storage facility to evaluate exposure of stored-product insects to aerosol formulations of synergized pyrethrins and the insect growth regulator methoprene. When adults of Tribolium castaneum （Herbst）, the red flour beetle, and Tribolium confusum （Jacqueline DuVal）, the confused flour beetle were exposed with and without a food source to synergized pyrethrin aerosol, there was no difference in adult mortality with respect to availability of food at either 7 or 14 days after exposure （P≥0.05）. However, mortality was lower in T. confusum （40.4% and 79.3% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 38.9% and 84.8% without flour at 7 and 14 days） compared to T. castaneum （96.5% and 99.8% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 91.0% and 98.7% without flour at 7 and 14 days）. Few late-stage larvae and pupae of either species exposed to the pyrethrin aerosol emerged as adults. in tests with methoprene aerosol, adult emergence of exposed 3- and 4-week-old larvae of T. confusum was less than 2%. Only 0.3% of 4-week-old larvae of T. castaneum exposed in open and obstructed areas emerged as adults. Emergence of adults from eggs of Plodia interpunctella （Hubner）, the indianmeal moth, embedded in culture media and exposed to the methoprene aerosol was 13.2%±3.5%. Results show that the aerosols evaluated in our study could give effective control of some of the major storedproduct insect pests in commercial food storage facilities, and may offer an alternative to fumigation.

A description of Jim＇s contributions to mathematics would take us far beyond our expertise. Jim was never content to spend too long in any one area of mathematics. Operator algebras, hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, fluid dynamics, quantum field theory and statistical mechanics and the computational aspects of applied mathematics are just a few of the areas to which Jim has contributed. Here we relate a few impressionistic recollections of personal interactions, together with some ideas about his work in quantum field theory and statistical mechanics. in spite of the non-technical character of these observations, we hope nevertheless that they will provide pleasure for our dear friend and for other readers as well.

in October 2021,an international collaborative study on the use of electroacupuncture(EA)to treat inflammation was published in the journal Nature by *** Ma’s *** on the results of EA on inflammation in the mouse model of lipopolysaccharide inflammatory storm,the study showed that the distal effect of acupuncture can be achieved by“driving the vagus-adrenal axis(through the adrenal medulla,by releasing catecholamines).”PROKR2Cre-marked sensory neurons,which innervate the deep hindlimb fascia but not the abdominal fascia,are crucial for driving this *** study suggests the existence of specificity distribution of acupoints,that different EA stimulation intensities or different needle penetration depths have different therapeutic effects,that photosensitive stimulation may be a substitute for needle acupuncture,and that massage,stretching and body movements may also activate PROKR2Cremarkable dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons and elicit anti-inflammatory ***,results of some other studies are contrary to the conclusions of Ma’s *** examples:low-intensity EA at GB30 point significantly reduced the inflammation in the rat model of persistent inflammation,which is more relevant to the real daily acupuncture practice,and this effect was partly related to the adrenal cortex and associated with the stimulation of corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone;manual acupuncture(similar to the low-intensity EA)at Ki3,Zhichuan point(an extra point),*** effective in a severe COViD-19 patient with sepsis;stimulating ST25 with low-intensity EA or manual acupuncture was effective against gastrointestinal inflammations;the above mentioned points are not in an area enriched with PROKR2Cre-marked sensory nerve *** shows that the mechanism of EA against inflammation includes modulating multi-systems,multi-levels and multi-targets,which does not limit to“driving the vagus-adrenal axis.”
