Noise shapes the distribution pattern of an acoustic predator

Noise, an obvious effect of urbanization, has a negative impact on animal vocalizations and the hunting efficiency of acoustic predators. However, the influence of noise pollution on the spatial distribution of populations remains understudied. The aim was to assess the factors shaping the distribution pattern of an acoustic predator （long-eared owl Asio otus） in an urban-farmland matrix. We hypothesized that the probability of an acoustic predator occurring decreases with growing nocturnal noise emission. This owl survey was conducted in Krak6w （S Poland） on 79 ran- domly selected sample plots （1 km x 1 km）. Six habitat variables （area of parks, woodlands, grass- land, arable land, habitat diversity index, and noise pollution） were identified and correlated with the probability of the species＇ occurrence. Proximity to pedestrian routes and roads, habitat frag- mentation, and noise intensity was also defined at nest sites and random sites. Long-eared owls occurred on 37% of the sample plots. Occupied plots had a greater area of grassland and arable land as well as a lower level of noise pollution than the unoccupied ones. A multivariate model revealed that area of grassland and nocturnal noise emission was significantly correlated with the probability of long-eared owls occurring and that the high probability of occurrence recorded on plots with large areas of grassland was reduced by noise pollution. The noise intensity recorded at nest sites was also significantly lower than at random sites. This study suggests that apart from habitat factors, the distribution of acoustic predators in an urban matrix is driven by noise pollu- tion. This highlights the importance of proper landscape management, that is, maintaining large grassland areas and preventing noise from increasing within them.

The scientific interest in capsules with the shell composed of fused microparticles is still growing due to a large number of practical ***-designed capsules should ensure the safe cargo delivery and facilitate its controlled release on *** biocompatibility and biodegradability are additional essential features of structures intended for biomedical *** paper presents two kinds of ultrasound sensitive capsules:the first type with the homogeneous shell made of a monolayer of fine turmeric granules,and the other with Janus shell composed of two different materials *** granules and synthetic polystyrene *** demonstrated that plane ultrasonic waves with low intensity and high frequency and also focused ultrasound can act as a trigger for smooth liberation of a liquid cargo,in our case,the dispersion of probiotic *** ultrasound-induced puncture of the shell was followed by unidirectional and controlled release of encapsulated *** case of Janus structures,in addition to sonication time and ultrasound frequency,distinct mechanical properties of two shell regions also influenced the course of content liberation *** expect that the use of natural material such as turmeric granules for the formation of the shells of the ultrasound-responsive capsules can further increase the range of their potential applications.

Analysis of the Cross-Wedge Rolling Process of Toothed Shafts Made from 2618 Aluminium Alloy

The paper presents the results of a thermo-mechanical analysis of the rolling two stepped *** of the shafts has a toothed step with skew teeth,while the other has a worm winding in the shape of a trapezoidal *** shape of the rolling tools resembles that of the tools used in the Roto-Flo rolling method;yet unlike in Roto-Flo,the shafts are hot-rolled and no centres are used to stabilize the position of the workpiece during the forming *** the calculations made with use of the DEFORM-3D process simulation system it has been assumed that the rolled shafts are made from 2618 aluminium *** a result of the calculations made,it has been found that the toothed stepped shafts can be formed in one pass by means of the cross rolling ***,the temperature and strain distribution in the rolled product have been determined as well as some data concerning the forces which are necessary for the rolling process have been obtained.

This paper presents theoretical analysis of unconventional forging process of hollowed shaft from Ti-6Al-4V alloy in a three-slide forging *** method in comparison with other metal forming methods allows for obtaining of hollowed *** designed process is verified theoretically by means of numerical simulations based on finite element method with assumption of 3D state of *** following factors are considered in the analysis:material flow kinematics,strain distribution,temperature distribution and force of *** the basis of results,it is stated that the application of designed technology allows for obtaining of a product of assumed quality.A comparison is made between material consumption in analyzed process and material consumption in typical metal forming methods,also in used at present technology of shaft manufacturing by machining *** is stated that the application of forging in the three-slide forging press allows for a considerable decrease of manufacturing costs due to material savings and decrease of labor consumption of operations at finishing.

A new clutch configuration with dual diaphragm spring is proposed. It is proper designed for electric and hybrid powertrain system. With this design, the clutch engagement is controlled by current in electrornagnet coil. For special characteristic of dual diaphragm spring, the clutch does not consume energy in steady state after engaging or disengaging. To validate the feasibility of this design, author builds the mathematical model and imports it into MATLAB Simulink. The simulation shows the behavior of clutch in different control strategies.

A Multi-Wavelength Study of the 3B/X1.2 Flare Observed on 2003 October 26

We report results from a multi-wavelength study of the 3B/X1.2 tworibbon disk flare （S15E44）, which was well observed by both ground-based and space-borne instruments. Two pairs of conjugate kernels - K1 and K4, and K2 and K3 - in the Ha images are identified. These kernels are linked by two different systems of EUV loops. K1 and K4 correspond to the two 17 GHz and 34 GHz microwave sources observed by the Nobeyama Radioheliograph （NoRH）, while K2 and K3 have no corresponding microwave sources. Optical spectroscopic observations suggest that all the four kernels are possible precipitating sites of non-thermal electrons. Thus the energy of electron deposited in K2 and K3 should be less than 100keV. Two-dimensional distributions of the full widths at half maximum （FWHM） of the Ha profiles and the line-of-sight （LOS） velocities derived from the Ca n 8542 A profiles indicate that the largest FWHM and LOS velocity tends to be located near the outer edges of Hα kernels, which is consistent with the scenario of current two-ribbon flare models and previous results. When non-thermal electron bombardment is present, the observed Hα and Ca II 8542 A profiles are similar to previous observational and theoretical results, while the He I 10830 A profiles are different from the theoretical ones. This puts some constraints on future theoretical calculation of the He I 10830 A line.
