An open compute and data federation as an alternative to monolithic infrastructures for big Earth data analytics

An adequate compute and storage infrastructure supporting the full exploitation of Copernicus and Earth Observation datasets is currently not available in *** paper presents the cross-disciplinary open-source technologies being leveraged in the C-SCALE project to develop an open federation of compute and data providers as an alternative to monolithic infrastructures for processing and analysing Copernicus and Earth Observation *** critical aspects of the federation and the chosen technologies are elaborated upon:(1)federated data discovery,(2)federated access and(3)software *** these technologies the open federation aims to provide homogenous access to resources,thereby enabling its users to generate meaningful results quickly and *** will be achieved by abstracting the complexity of infrastructure resource access provisioning and orchestration,including discovery of data across distributed archives,away from the *** is needed because end-users wish to focus on analysing ready-to-use data products and models rather than spending their time on the setup and maintenance of complex and heterogeneous IT *** open federation will support processing and analysing the vast amounts of Copernicus and Earth Observation data that are critical for the implementation of the Destination Earth *** Twins vision for a high precision digital model of the Earth to model,monitor and simulate natural phenomena and related human activities.

Ecological interactions are of paramount importance for the functioning and health of ecosystems. Phytophagous insects are part of complex ecological networks involving abiotic factors, host plants, natural enemies, and benefi- cial organisms （McLean et al., 2016）. Insects and plants are also associated durably or transitorily with a wealth of microbes including pathogens, commensals and beneficial partners from a vast array of microbial taxa （Sugio et al., 2015）. In recent years, evidence has accumulated that microbes directly or indirectly influence plant-insect interactions at individual, population and community levels.

Three-dimensional(3D)nanostructured functional materials are important systems allowing new means for intricate control of electromagnetic properties.A key problem is realising a 3D printing methodology on the nanoscale that can yield a range of functional *** this article,it is shown that two-photon lithography,when combined with laser ablation of sacrificial layers,can be used to realise such a vision and produce 3D functional nanomaterials of complex ***-of-principle is first shown by fabricating planar magnetic nanowires raised above the substrate that exhibit controlled domain wall injection and ***,3D artificial spin-ice(3DASI)structures are fabricated,whose complex switching can be probed using optical *** show that by careful analysis of the magneto-optical Kerr effect signal and by comparison with micromagnetic simulations,depth dependent switching information can be obtained from the 3DASI *** work paves the way for new materials,which exploit additional physics provided by non-trivial 3D geometries.

Root symbionts： Powerful drivers of plant above- and belowground indirect defenses

Soil microbial mutualists of plants, including mycorrhizal ftmgi, non- mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, have been typically characterized for increasing nutrient acquisition and plant growth. More recently, soil microbes have also been shown to increase direct plant defense against above- and below- ground herbivores. Plants, however, do not only rely on direct defenses when attacked, but they can also recruit pest antagonists such as predators and parasitoids, both above and belowground, mainly via the release of volatile organic compounds （i.e., indirect defenses）. In this review, we illustrate the main features and effects of soil microbial mutualists of plants on plant indirect defenses and discuss possible applications within the framework of sustainable crop protection against root- and shoot-feeding arthropod pests. We indicate the main knowledge gaps and the future challenges to be addressed in the study and application of these rnultifaceted interactions.

The effect of different agricultural management practices on irrigation efficiency, water use efficiency and green and blue water footprint

This paper explores the effect of varying agricultural management practices on different water efficiency indicators: irrigation efficiency(IE), crop water use efficiency(WUE), and green and blue water footprint(WF). We take winter wheat in an experimental field in Northern China as a case study and consider a dry, average and wet year. We conducted 24 modeling experiments with the Aqua Crop model, for all possible combinations of four irrigation techniques, two irrigation strategies and three mulching methods. Results show that deficit irrigation most effectively improved blue water use, by increasing IE(by 5%) and reducing blue WF(by 38%), however with an average 9% yield reduction. Organic or synthetic mulching practices improved WUE(by 4% and 10%, respectively)and reduced blue WF(by 8% and 17%, respectively), with the same yield level. Drip and subsurface drip irrigation improved IE and WUE, but drip irrigation had a relatively large blue WF. Improvements in one water efficiency indicator may cause a decline in another. In particular,WUE can be improved by more irrigation at the cost of the blue WF. Furthermore, increasing IE, for instance by installing drip irrigation, does not necessarily reduce the blue WF.

Plant responses to variable timing of aboveground clipping and belowground herbivory depend on plant age

Aims Plants use different types of responses such as tolerance and induced defense to mitigate the effects of *** direc-tion and magnitude of both these plant responses can vary with plant ***,most studies have focused on aboveground herbivory,whereas important feeding occurs ***,we tested the hypothesis that plant tolerance and defense following shoot damage or root herbivory depends on plant *** In order to test our hypothesis,we exposed the perennial grass spe-cies Holcus lanatus to defoliation and root nematode inoculation at three growth stages(young,intermediate and old plants),and exam-ined responses of plant traits related to tolerance(regrowth follow-ing defoliation)and defense(leaf and root nitrogen and phenolics).Important Findings Defoliation overall reduced plant shoot and root biomass as well as foliar concentrations of phenolics regardless of plant age at *** contrast,defoliation increased foliar N concentrations,but only when defoliation occurred at intermediate and old plant *** with root-feeding nematodes reduced root N concentra-tions after a prolonged period of growth,but only when nematodes had been inoculated when plants were *** relative shoot re-growth rate of plants increased immediately after defoliation but this was independent of the plant age at which defoliation occurred,*** not stronger in plants that were defoliated at a more advanced age,as ***,relative root growth rates increased shortly after defoliation,but this was only observed for plants defoli-ated when they were *** conclude that plant responses to aboveground and belowground herbivory in traits related to both defense and tolerance are affected by plant age,but do not gener-ally change with plant age.

This multiple case study of a contracting firm contributes to understanding the barriers that organizations face during the implementation of building information modeling(BIM)by providing insights into the impact of these barriers across different organizational levels(i.e.,from top management to project teams)and by relating these barriers to different degrees of BIM ***,we observe the dominance of barriers related to the motivation,competence,and time capacity of people across all levels of an ***,the cluster of barriers at the middle-management level highlights the important role of this level in reducing these ***,only those cases with a low level of BIM maturity have struggled with lack of top management support,thereby highlighting the importance of such support in achieving BIM maturity *** BIM maturity situations are more prone to externally oriented barriers in attempting to further leverage the benefits of *** study provides insights on where to focus BIM implementation measures and how to enhance organizational BIM maturity.
