Assessment of clinical and pathological features of patients who underwent thyroid surgery: A retrospective clinical study

AIM To evaluate whether there was any correlation between the clinical parameters and final pathological results among patients who underwent thyroid surgery. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed parameters, including age, sex, complete blood cell count parameters, nodule diameter, nodule localization, thyroid function testing, and pathology reports, in patients who underwent thyroid surgery. The patients were divided into malignant (n = 92) and benign (n = 413) groups depending on the final pathological results. Both groups were compared for demographic and clinicalparameters. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was used to determine if the quantitative variables had a normal distribution. The nonparametric MannWhitney U test was used to compare quantitative data that were not normally distributed, and Pearson's chisquared test was used to compare the qualitative data. The correlation between the final pathological results and fine-needle aspiration biopsy findings was calculated using the cross-tabulation *** This study included 406 women and 99 men aged between 15 and 85 years. No significant differences were found between the groups with respect to age, sex, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, thrombocyte count, red cell distribution width, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume, platecrit, nodule localization, and thyroid function testing. On the other hand, there were significant differences between the groups with respect to nodule size (P = 0.001), cervical lymphadenopathy(P = 0.0001) and nodular calcification (P = 0.0001). Compared with the malignant group, the benign group had a significantly greater nodule size (35.4 mm vs 27.6 mm). The best cut-off point (≤ 28 mm) for nodule size, as determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve, had a sensitivity and specificity of 67.7% and 64.4%, respectively. Empirical study of magnetohydrodynamic effect on fluid flow in clayey porous media

Enhancing oil recovery from clayey reservoirs is a significant challenge in petroleum industry due to complex interactions between fluids and rock surfaces, particularly clay swelling. This study presents the first empirical analysis of magnetic fields' impact on fluid flow in clayey porous media. Our core findings indicate that magnetic treatment of water increases oil recovery by an average of 15-30% in clayey media, with limited effectiveness in pure quartz media. Detailed experiments unraveled that improved recovery factor by magnetic treatment stem from both mitigated swelling and altered magnetic properties at clay surface; introducing 30% clay to porous medium decreased the recovery by 32% compared to pure quartz sand. Heating the clay to around 1000 degrees C to reduce its swelling property improved the recovery by only 16%, suggesting magnetic treatment is not solely attributed to clay swelling mitigation. Treating ferromagnetic films at clay surface with HCl to produce non-magnetic FeCl3 resulted in a high recovery factor, similar to the clay-free medium. Moreover, it was determined that a magnetic field intensity of 43760-51740 A/m is optimal for fluid displacement in clayey media. Notably, the intensity of 47760 A/m increased recovery to 84.5% in a 30% clay medium, compared to 49.7% without treatment. Interestingly, it was observed that the maximum flow rate was associated with zero potential difference across the medium, providing a faster method to determine the optimum magnetic field intensity. Lastly, the concept of 'Magnetic memory' was investigated, referring to the persistence of magnetic field's influence after its removal. Our findings indicated that pressure build-up time stability lasted 10 days posttreatment, after which water behavior reverts, and clay swelling resumes. This insight into the temporal dynamics of magnetic field application provides a deeper understanding of its long-term impacts on fluid flow in clayey reservoirs. (c) 2

Highly selective adsorption of rhenium by amyloid-like protein material

Rhenium separation from molybdenum in molybdenite minerals and waste leachate has become an emerging *** this challenge,we prepared a set of protein-based alkylamine/alkylammonium salts complexes as extractants for selective uptake of rhenium from molybdenum,where the protein component turned into the insoluble amyloid-like structure when its internal disulfide bonds were reduced,namely phase-transition *** them,the phase-transited lysozyme and methyletrioctyleammonium chloride complex(PTL-N263)exhibited the most efficient adsorption at the alkaline condition for the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged metal ions with positively charged center(R_(4)N^(+))in N263,where negatively charged protein residues hindered the ion exchange of Cl^(-)in N263 for larger size Mo species(Mo_(7)O_(24)^(6-))than smaller size Re species(ReO^(4-)).The adsorption follows the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics,which exhibits toplevel adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption capacity of 124 mg/g and a separation factor(β_(Re/Mo))of 2.78×10^(3)for *** adsorption capacity per unit area(57.2 mg/(g m^(2)))is 1.6–41 times higher than previously reported adsorbents,and the cost for adsorbing 1 g of Re(VII)is$1.07,indicating its industrial *** adsorption strategy can be applied to separating Re from Mo in binary solutions and industrial wastewater with other competing ions.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses like salinity and improve crop ***,their effects are variable,and the underlying cause of such variation remains largely *** study aimed to assess how drought modifed the effect of AMF on plant resistance to high calcium-saline stress.A pot experiment was performed to examine how AMF inoculation affects the growth,photosynthetic activity,nutrient uptake and carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)stoichiometric ratio(C:N:P)of maize under high calcium stress and contrasting water *** results showed that high calcium stress signifcantly reduced mycorrhizal colonization,biomass accumulation,C assimilation rate and C:N stoichiometric ratio in plant ***,the adverse effects of calcium stress on photosynthesis were exacerbated under *** inoculation profoundly alleviated such reductions under drought and saline ***,it barely affected maize performance when subjected to calcium stress under well-watered ***,watering changed AMF impact on nutrient allocation in plant *** well-watered conditions,AMF stimulated P accumulation in roots and plant growth,but did not induce leaf P accumulation proportional to C and N,resulting in increased leaf C:P and N:P ratios under high calcium *** contrast,AMF decreased N content and the N:P ratio in leaves under ***,AMF inoculation improved maize resistance to calcium-salt stress through enhanced photosynthesis and modulation of nutrient stoichiometry,particularly under water defcit *** results highlighted the regulatory role of AMF in carbon assimilation and nutrient homeostasis under compound stresses,and provide signifcant guidance on the improvement of crop yield in saline and arid regions.

Properties of Eco-Friendly Oriented Strand Board Produced from Oil Palm Trunk

Despite its considerable potential,oil palm trunk(OPT)remains underutilized,largely owing to the cyclical replanting process that occurs every 25–30 *** study aimed to address this issue by developing an ecofriendly oriented strand board(OSB)using vascular bundles(VBs)from oil palm,both in binderless form and with the incorporation of natural adhesives made from sucrose and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate(ADP).The VB was extracted from OPT using a pressure cooker and mixed with a sucrose-ADP solution at various *** mixture was then pressed at temperatures of 180°C and 200°C for 10 min to form boards,which were evaluated based on the Japanese Industrial Standard(JIS)A 5908 for *** OSB was also manufactured without the use of any adhesive ***-transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy was conducted to evaluate the VB and its *** results indicated that the mechanical properties of the binderless OSB met the JIS A 5908 Type 8 ***,the addition of sucrose-ADP improved the physical and mechanical properties of the board,with an optimal sucrose-to-ADP ratio of 85:*** OSB with the best properties met the JIS A 5908 Type 13 *** FTIR results indicated that carbonyl groups,furan rings,and lignin played important roles in the bonding properties of the *** conclusion,this research demonstrated the potential of VBs as a raw material for producing environmentally friendly OSB,both in binderless form and with the use of sucrose-ADP.
