The main goal of the present paper is to present a mathematical framework for modelling tumour growth based on stress state decomposition technique (SSDT). This is a straightforward extension of the model for multi-phase nonsaturated soil consolidation with pollutant transport presented by the authors and may be regarded as an alternative to classical frameworks based on TCAT theory. In this preliminary work, the Representative Volume Element (RVE) for tumour is proposed along with its comparison with the corresponding one for soils modelling developed formerly by the authors. Equations standing for tumour phase are flawlessly brought into correspondence with those of gaseous phase in the soil problem showing that a similar task may be carried out for the remainders phases taking part in both RVEs. Furthermore, stresses induced by nonlinear saturation and permeability dependence on suction for soil interstitial fluids transport finds its counterpart on the contact between the cancer cell membrane and interstitial fluids rendering a higher primary variables coupling degree than what was attained in TCAT theory. From these preliminaries assessments, it may be put forward that likewise the stress state decomposition procedure stands for an alternative for modelling multi-phase nonsaturated soil consolidation with pollutant transport;it does for modelling cancer as well.

In this work we find a lower bound on the energy required for synchronizing moving sensor nodes in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) affected by large-scale fading, based on clock estimation techniques. The energy required for synchronizing a WSN within a desired estimation error level is specified by both the transmit power and the required number of messages. In this paper we extend our previous work introducing nodes’ movement and the average message delay in the total energy, including a comprehensive analysis on how the distance between nodes impacts on the energy and synchronization quality trade-off under large-scale fading effects.

In this work, the existing trade-off between time synchronization quality and energy is studied for both large-scale and small-scale fading wireless channels. We analyze the clock offset estimation problem using one-way, two-way and N-way message exchange mechanisms affected by Gaussian and exponentially distributed impairments. Our main contribution is a general relationship between the total energy required for synchronizing a wireless sensor network and the clock offset estimation error by means of the transmit power, number of transmitted messages and average message delay, deriving the energy optimal lower bound as a function of the time synchronization quality and the number of hops in a multi-hop network.

作为岩石基本属性的变形记忆效应(deformation memory effect,DME)具有时效特性,加载保持时间(Tc)对岩石DME的影响是其时效特性之一。选用砂岩及2种花岗岩材料,开展不同Tc下的物理试验,对记忆信息形成精度及应变差幅值等进行分析,并基于岩石内部多微结构面间的黏弹性摩擦滑动理论,采用岩石三元件构建基本记忆单元理论模型,进行不同Tc下DME力学理论研究,结果表明:(1)随Tc增加,2种花岗岩和砂岩的记忆信息形成精度明显提高,应变差幅值逐渐减小;(2)记忆理论模型的记忆信息形成精度和应变差幅值的变化规律和物理试验保持一致,即基于多微结构面的记忆理论模型能够描述不同Tc下的岩石DME宏观行为;(3)Tc增加到一定幅度时,记忆信息形成精度和应变差幅值趋于不变,并提出当应变差幅值稳定时,此时为最佳Tc。结论给出了保持加载下岩石DME时效特性变化规律,为岩石DME时效性研究提供了试验及理论基础。

Objective: Cell structural changes are one of the main features observed during the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS). In this work, we propose the use of diffusion tensor imaging(DTI) metrics to assess specific ultrastructural changes in the central nervous system during the early neurodegenerative stages of ***: Ultra-high field MRI and DTI data at 17.6 T were obtained from fixed, excised mouse brains, and spinal cords from ALS(G93 A-SOD1) ***: Changes in fractional anisotropy(FA) and linear, planar, and spherical anisotropy ratios(C_L, C_P, and C_S, respectively) of the diffusion eigenvalues were measured in white matter(WM) and gray matter(GM) areas associated with early axonal degenerative processes(in both the brain and the spinal cord). Specifically, in WM structures(corpus callosum, corticospinal tract, and spinal cord funiculi) as the disease progressed, FA, C_L, and C_P values decreased, whereas C_S values increased. In GM structures(prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and central spinal cord) FA and C_P decreased, whereas the C_L and C_S values were unchanged or slightly smaller. Histological studies of a fluorescent mice model(YFP, G93 A-SOD1 mouse) corroborated the early alterations in neuronal morphology and axonal connectivity measured by ***: Changes in diffusion tensor shape were observed in this animal model at the early, nonsymptomatic stages of ALS. Further studies of C_L, C_P, and C_S as imaging biomarkers should be undertaken to refine this neuroimaging tool for future clinical use in the detection of the early stages of ALS.

BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes(T1D)contributes to altered lipid profiles and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease(CVD).Youth with T1D may have additional CVD risk factors within the first decade of *** To examine risk factors for dyslipidemia in young subjects with *** Longitudinal and cross-sectional retrospective study of 170 young subjects with T1D(86 males;baseline mean age 12.2±5.6 years and hemoglobin A1c 8.4%±1.4%)were followed in a single tertiary diabetes center for a median duration of 15 *** for outcomes of lipid profiles at last visit(total cholesterol[TC],triglycerides[TGs],low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol[LDL-c],and highdensity lipoprotein-cholesterol[HDL-c])were analyzed by stepwise linear regression *** At baseline,79.5%of the patients had at least one additional CVD risk factor(borderline dyslipidemia/dyslipidemia[37.5%],pre-hypertension/hypertension[27.6%],and overweight/obesity[16.5%])and 41.6%had multiple(≥2)CVD risk factors.A positive family history of at least one CVD risk factor in a first-degree relative was reported in 54.1%of the *** of elevated TC:family history of CVD(β[SE]=23.1[8.3],P=0.006);of elevated LDL-c:baseline diastolic blood pressure(DBP)(β[SE]=11.4[4.7],P=0.003)and family history of CVD(β[SE]=20.7[6.8],P=0.017);of elevated TGs:baseline DBP(β[SE]=23.8[9.1],P=0.010)and family history of CVD(β[SE]=31.0[13.1],P=0.020);and of low HDL-c levels:baseline DBP(β[SE]=4.8[2.1],P=0.022]).CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that elevated lipid profiles are associated with DBP and a positive family history of *** is of utmost importance to prevent and control modifiable risk factors such as these,as early as childhood,given that inadequate glycemic control and elevation in blood pressure intensify the risk of dyslipidemia.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to compare the time to overall length of stay(LOS) for patients who underwent point-of-care ultrasound(POCUS) versus radiology department ultrasound(RDUS).METHODS: This was a prospective study on a convenience sample of patients who required pelvic ultrasound imaging as part of their emergency department(ED) ***: We enrolled a total of 194 patients who were on average 32 years-old. Ninety-eight(51%) patients were pregnant(<20 weeks). Time to completion of RDUS was 66 minutes longer than POCUS(95%CI 60–73, P<0.01). Patients randomized to the RDUS arm experienced a 120 minute longer ED length of stay(LOS)(95%CI 66–173, P<0.01)CONCLUSION: In patients who require pelvic ultrasound as part of their diagnostic evaluation, POCUS resulted in a signifi cant decrease in time to ultrasound and ED LOS.
