A Randomized,Double Blinded,Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial of Silymarin in Ulcerative Colitis

Objective： To evaluate the clinical efficacy of silymarin in ulcerative colitis （UC） patients. Methods： A randomized double blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in 80 UC patients whose disease had been documented and were in remission state between September 2009 and October 2010. Patients were assigned to silymarin group （42 cases） and placebo group （38 cases） using a random number table. Either silymarin （140 mg） or placebo （lactose mono-hydrate, corn starch magnesium stearate） tablets were given once daily for 6 months along with their standard therapy. The efficacies were assessed by disease activity index （DAI）, frequency difference of the disease flare-up, and paraclinical data. Results： Ten patients （4 in the silymarin group due to nausea and 6 in the placebo group due to disease flare-up and abdominal pain） discontinued the study. An improvement in hemoglobin level （11.8± 1.6 g/dL vs. 13.4± 1.2 g/dL, P〈0.05） and erythrocyte sedimentation rate （23.7 ＋_ 11.5 mm/h vs.10.8＋ 3.2 mm/h, P〈0.05） was observed in the silymarin group but not in the placebo group. DAI significantly decreased in the silymarin group and reached from 11.3 ± 3.5 to 10.7±2.8 （P〈0.05）. Thirty-five out of 38 patients in the silymarin group were in complete remission with no flare-up after 6 months as compared to 21 out of 32 patients in the placebo group （P=0.5000）. Conclusion： Silymarin as a natural supplement may be used in UC patients to maintain remission.

This study evaluated the impact of thermal treatment and lactic acid bacteria fermentation of sorghum on the antioxidant,antidiabetic,nutritional and metabolite *** cooking and pressurized cooking improved the antioxidant capacity compared to *** of wet cooked(H95F)and pressurized cooked samples(H121F)further enhanced the ABTS and DPPH antioxidant capacity by 2.4 and 2.0 times;and 1.5 and 1.8 times higher than raw,*** acidilactici OHFR1 fermentation of sorghum M20 genotype after wet cooking at 60℃,80℃ and 95℃ significantly decreasedα-glucosidase inhibition to 39.1%,40.6% and 46.4%,respectively,compared to raw(51.6%).However,α-glucosidase inhibition significantly increased to 70.1% after pressurized cooking and ***,28 metabolites including phenolic compounds,amino acids and their derivatives,peptides and microbial metabolites were identified in sorghum M20 using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS non-targeted approach after *** to the raw sorghum sample,wet cooking and pressurized cooking resulted in 9 differential metabolites *** after wet and pressurized cooking resulted in 4 and 14 differential metabolites,respectively,compared to the *** findings confirm the potential of thermal treatment and fermentation to significantly modify sorghum bioactive components and their use as functional ingredients in the management of diabetes.

The microstructure and impact behavior of A356 aluminum alloy were studied after melt treatment processes of grain refinement and modification under both non-heat treated and T6 heat treated conditions. The modification and grain refinement were done with the addition of Al-10%Sr and Al-5Ti-1B master alloys, respectively. All casting parameters were kept constant in order to focus on the influence of mentioned treatments. The results indicate that the eutectic silicon morphology is the main parameter to control the impact behavior of alloy. Consequently, the individual grain refinement of as-cast alloy does not improve the impact toughness as the modification does. While, simultaneous grain refinement and modification provide higher impact toughness in comparison with individual treatments. T6 heat treatment of the alloy improves the impact toughness under all melt-treated conditions. This is related to the further modification of eutectic silicon particles. To verify the results and clarify the mechanisms, three-point bending test and fractography were used to interpret the improvement of impact toughness of the alloy.

The radial dependence of edge plasma turbulence is investigated in the IR-T1 *** radial profile of the fluctuation level and spectra are measured using an array of Langmuir probes(rake probe)in the r/a=0.75-1.2 *** all radial positions the edge plasma is turbulently unstable,with a broad band fluctuation spectrum in the frequency range f=10-1000 *** relative fluctuation level,as monitored by the ion saturation current J_(+),is always highest near the wall and decreases monotonically toward the plasma center,while the shape of the fluctuation power spectra is almost *** result of this experiment shows that in contrast to the more inner regions,the plasma near the wall does not simply have a small density fluctuation about a mean,but rather a shredded structure in which one can imagine that discrete shreds of plasma interact with one another rather than with the average background.

General English course at Iranian universities has always been a controversial issue since the students taking this course are rather weak in English proficiency and need more authentic instructions based on accurate need analysis. The materials applied in this course are mainly focused on reading comprehension. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to improve General English university students＇ main sub-skills of reading comprehension and see the effect of the possible changes in terms of time and the fields of study of the students. To do this, 168 university students taking General English course at university of Bojnord, including humanities, engineering, physical education, and sciences, received instruction on the main sub-skills of reading comprehension after taking a pre-test sample TOELF section of reading comprehension. After 16 sessions of 90 minute instruction, they took the post-test section of TOEFL sample of reading comprehension. Mixed between within subject analysis of variance was used to assess the impact of instruction for the four groups of students from pre-test to post-test. The findings of the study indicated that the effect of instruction in terms of time, from pre-test to post-test, and the interaction of time and fields of study were significant. Besides, changes for 10 sub-skills were the same among the four fields of study.

Increase of Diagnostic Mirror Lifetime Using TiN Coated Stainless Steel by Using a Plasma Focus Device

Plasma-surface interaction experiments on TiN coated stainless steel 316L （S.S.316L） using a plasma focus （PF） device have been performed in an attempt to investigate whether we can use the hardness property of TiN against erosion to increase the lifetime of the mirrors used in plasma diagnostics equipment. Firstly, two similar S.S.316L samples were chosen for this purpose. One of the samples was coated with TiN by using a PF device, while the other was kept intact as a reference for investigating the effect of TiN coating. Then, in order to study the coating effects, these samples were exposed to 200 shots of hydrogen plasma with a total duration of 7 s in a tokamak. Before and after exposure, samples were analyzed by using atomic force microscopy （AFM）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, X-ray diffraction （XRD） and a spectrophotometer. It was found that the uncoated sample was severely damaged, its reflection dropped significantly, and it developed some cracks and lines, while no significant change was observed on the surface characteristic of the coated sample. Moreover the weight loss of the uncoated sample was higher in comparison to the coated one. Therefore the results of this experiment showed that the coating of S.S.316L by TiN using a PF device is a useful method to strengthen it against plasma erosion and with further optimization it could possibly be used in preparing plasma diagnostics mirrors.

On the Ecological Evaluation of Iranian Secondary Schools English Language Course Books in Light Intercultural Communicative Competence： Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude

With the spread of English language around the world and its status as an international language, the need for more communication is felt. One pivoting aspect of this communication is the role of culture which can contribute to the success of communication at the global level and the co-construction of identities as individuals from different parts of the world get into interactions. Thus, the role of materials developed for learning English, especially the local ones, in the improvement of individuals＇ intercultural competence is significant. New course books for learning English at Iranian secondary schools entitled Prospect series have been developed recently. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the first and the second books of this series in light of Byram＇s model of Intercultural Communicative Competence （1CC）. Based on this model, ICC consists of three dimensions of attitude, knowledge, skills, and five saviors of knowledge, attitude, discovery, interaction, and critical thinking. To do the evaluation of the course books, the checklist developed based on these five saviors was used to evaluate the tasks for each unit of the books. The evaluation was done separately by each of the researchers in the study and inter-rater reliability showed a high level of Cronbach alpha. The findings indicated that about 90 percent of the activities of Prospect 1 and Prospect 2 lack the skills required for improving English language learners＇ ICC. They mostly focus on Iranian culture which might have been improved via learners＇ first language as well. This might imply the need for the adaptation of Prospect series activities in light of ICC so that Iranian English language learners can take advantage of their communication with the rest of the world.

Towards an Ecological Understanding of Translation Etemality in the Context of Iran

This study attempted to investigate the similarities and differences regarding the conceptions of translation eternality among a small group of Iranian people of different social positions and different ages. Sixty-two participants were selected based on the maximum variation sampling. To gather data, semi-structured interview was utilized. The participants were asked a list of 11 questions collected from the existing literature on the similar topics. Then, the interviews were transcribed for analyzing the data. Besides, Erikson＇s （1959） theory of development was used to classify participants of different ages in four groups of teenager, young, middle age, and old. The high frequency factors were found and analyzed with the use of Bronfenbrenner＇s （1979） nested ecological model. Moreover, the participants were classified in 11 groups based on their social positions and their conceptions were analyzed with the same method. Broadly speaking, 17 central tendencies in the interviews were obtained： People mainly focused on subjects of the books, translation fluency, author＇s competence in writing, and translator＇s competence, translations which have common grounds with social events of Iran, advertisement, existence of movie or cartoon adaptation of the book, translator＇s awareness of the content of the book, existence of cultural similarities between the source and target culture, popularity of the translator, author, and the original book, conversational language in translation, translation fidelity, being both translator and author, and effect of censorship on translation. Besides, old participants seemed to have more precise view on translation eternality and teenager＇s concerns were mostly about the appearance-related issues.

Acoustic signals travels rapidly in water without attenuating fish *** digital sonar and passive acoustic has been used for fish monitoring and fish ***,it is an urgent need to introduce new techniques in order to monitor the growth rate of fish during harvesting and without causing adverse effects to the harvested ***,a novel technique was introduced to probe the acoustic signal frequency ratio in absence and presence of the fish in tanks,which basically uses an acoustic sensor(hydrophone),acoustic signal processing system(scope meter),and a signal monitoring system(fluke view).Acoustic signals were selected from 48-52 Hz frequency,measure of dispersion of frequency signal represented as a function of time via Xlstat *** of dispersion displayed a significant effect of acoustic signal in the presence and absence of the fish in *** optimised protocols of this study will help to control and prevent excessive wastage of feed and enhance proper utilization of feed that chiefly enhance fish growth in aquaculture.
