Long-lasting effects of unplanned logging on the seed rain of mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern South America

In vivo Anticancer Activities of Benzophenone Semicarbazone against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells in Swiss Albino Mice

Objective Benzophenone semicarbazone(BSC) was synthesized and characterized to identify compounds with anticancer activities. Methods Anticancer activities were studied against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma(EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice by monitoring parameters such as tumor weight measurement,survival time of tumor bearing mice,tumor cell growth inhibition,and so *** hematological parameters,such as red blood cells,white blood cells,and hemoglobin content,were also measured. Results The results showed that BSC has a positive effect against EAC *** assessment was conducted by comparing these results with those obtained using the standard drug bleomycin. Conclusions The BSC compound can be considered as a potent anticancer agent.

Objective:To determine the hepatoprotective effect of acetone semicarbazone(ASC)in vivo in normal and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC)bearing male Swiss albino ***:Druginduced changes in biochemical and behavioral parameters at dose of 2.0 mg/kg body weight for14 d and nullifying the toxicity induced by EAC cells were *** histopathology studies of the protective effects of ASC on vital organs were also ***:The administration of ASC made insignificant changes in body weight and behavioral(salivation,diarrhea,muscular numbness)changes during treatment period due to minor toxicity were minimized after the treatment in normal *** biochemical parameters,including serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase,glutamate oxaloactate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,serum glucose,cholesterol,urea,triglyceride and billirubin changed modestly in normal mice receiving *** the treatment continued,these values gradually decreased to normal level after the *** EAC bearing mice,the toxic effects due to EAC cells in all cases were nullified by treatment with the *** abnormalities were not detected in histology of the various organs of the normal mice treated with ***:ASC can,therefore,be considered safe in formulating novel anticancer drug,as it exhibits strong protective effect against EAC cell bearing mice.

Mitochondrial DNA mutations-candidate biomarkers for breast cancer diagnosis in Bangladesh

Breast cancer is a major health problem that affects more than 24% of women in Bangladesh. Furthermore, among low-income countries including Bangladesh, individuals have a high risk for developing breast cancer. This study aimed to identify candidate mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) biomarkers for breast cancer diagnosis in Bangladeshi women to be used as a preventive approach. We screened the blood samples from 24 breast cancer patients and 20 healthy controls to detect polymorphisms in the D-loop and the ND3-and ND4-coding regions of mtDNA by direct sequencing. Among 14 distinct mutations, 10 polymorphisms were found in the D-loop, 3 were found in the ND3-coding region, and 1 was found in the ND4-coding region. The frequency of two novel polymorphisms in the D-loop, one at position 16290 (Tins) and the other at position 16293 (A-del), was higher in breast cancer patients than in control subjects (position 16290: odds ratio = 6.011, 95% confidence interval = 1.2482 to 28.8411, P = 0.002; position 16293: odds ratio = 5.6028, 95% confidence interval = 1.4357 to 21.8925, P = 0.010). We also observed one novel mutation in the ND3-coding region at position 10316 (A > G) in 69% of breast cancer patients but not in control subjects. Transitions of care across hospital settings in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is a chronic, inflammatory disorder characterised by both intestinal and extra-intestinal pathology. Patients may receive both emergency and elective care from several providers, often in different hospital settings. Poorly managed transitions of care between providers can lead to inefficiencies in care and patient safety issues. To ensure that the sharing of patient information between providers is appropriate, timely, accurate and secure, effective data-sharing infrastructure needs to be developed. To optimise inter-hospital data-sharing for IBD patients, we need to better understand patterns of hospital encounters in this *** To determine the type and location of hospital services accessed by IBD patients in *** was a retrospective observational study using Hospital Episode Statistics, a large administrative patient data set from the National Health Service in *** patients with a diagnosis of IBD following admission to hospital were followed over a 2-year period to determine the proportion of care accessed at the same hospital providing their outpatient IBD care, defined as their ‘home provider'. Secondary outcome measures included the geographic distribution of patient-sharing, regional and age-related differences in accessing services, and type and frequency of outpatient ***95055 patients accessed hospital services on 1760156 occasions over a 2-year follow-up period. The proportion of these encounters with their identified IBD‘home provider' was 73.3%, 87.8% and 83.1% for accident and emergency,inpatient and outpatient encounters respectively. Insights into gastric neuroendocrine tumors burden

Type 1 gastric neuroendocrine tumors （gNETs） are usually small lesions, restricted to mucosal and sub-mucosal layers of corpus and fundus, with low aggressive behavior, for the majority of cases. Nevertheless, some cases present aggressive behavior. The increasing incidence of gNETs brings together a new relevant problem： how to identify potentially aggressive type I gNETs. The challenging problem seems to be finding out signs or features able to predict potentially aggressive cases, allowing a tailored approach, since the involved societies dedicated to provide guidelines for management of these neoplasms apparently failed in producing staging systems able to accurately predict prognosis of these tumors. Additionally, it is also important to try to find out explanations for increasing incidence, as well as to identify potential targets aiming to reach better control of this neoplasia. Here, we discuss potential pathways implicated in aggressive behavior, as well as new strategies to improve clinical management of these tumors.

Introduction: 68Ga-PSMA-11 is considered the gold standard in detection of micro and oligometastases in advanced prostate cancer, being used for therapeutic planning, as well as, potentially, for evaluating response to treatment. The development of ready-to-use lyophilized kit of PSMA-11 adds quality and safety to the routine use of this radiopharmaceutical and represents a pharmacotechnical challenge as it must preserve the integrity and specificity of the ligand. Methods: PSMA-11 kit formulation was proposed, considering radiolabeling parameters and the preservation of the peptide during the lyophilization process, using mannitol as an excipient. Critical temperature characterization studies were carried out using DSC equipment and the freeze-drying process was developed. The direct radiolabeling conditions were evaluated and standardized using 68Ge/68Ga generator eluate from two different manufacturers (ITG and Eckert & Ziegler). The radiochemical purity was evaluated by TLC and HPLC. Biological evaluation was carried out with lyophilized PSMA-11 to demonstrate the integrity of the peptide and preservation of biological activity after the lyophilization process. Results: Based on critical temperature characterization studies, the freeze-drying cycle was designed to reach a freezing temperature of around −40˚C and primary drying at 2˚C. Using 20 mg of mannitol, an intact and elegant lyophilized cake was obtained. PSMA-11 lyophilized kit was directly labeled with 68Ga eluate from 68Ge/68Ga GMP generators (ITG and Eckert & Ziegler) resulting in % RP > 95% at pH 4.0 to 4.5. The results obtained from in vitro and in vivo biological competition studies confirmed the preservation of PSMA-11 affinity for the receptor after lyophilization. Conclusion: A lyophilized formulation (Kit) of PSMA-11 was successfully obtained, which preserved the integrity and biological activity of the peptide and guaranteed radiolabeling efficiency.

Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus:A case report

The authors present the clinical case of an 87-year-old Caucasian male admitted to the emergency room with hematemesis. He had a history of intermittent dys-phagia during the previous month. Endoscopic evaluation revealed an eccentric,soft esophageal lesionlocated 25-35 cm from the incisors,which appeared asa protrusion of the esophagus wall,with active bleeding. Biopsies were acquired. Tissue evaluation wascompatible with a melanoma. After excluding other sites of primary neoplasm,the definitive diagnosis of Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Esophagus(PMME) was made. The patient developed a hospital-acquired respiratory infection and died before tumor-directed treatment could begin. Primary malignant melanoma represents only 0.1% to 0.2% of all esophageal ma-lignant tumors. Risk factors for PMME are not defined.A higher incidence of PMME has been described in Japan. Dysphagia,predominantly for solids,is the most frequent symptom at presentation. Retrosternal orepigastric discom fort or pain,melena or hemate mesishave also been described. The characteristic endoscopic finding of PMME is as a polypoid lesion,with variablesize,usually pigmented. The neoplasm occurs in thelower two-thirds of the esophagus in 86% of *** metastasizes via hematogenic and lymphatic pathways. At diagnosis,50% of the patients present with distant metastases to the liver,the mediastinum,the lungs and the brain. When possible,surgery(curative or palliative) ,is the preferential method of treatment. There are some reports in the literature where chemotherapy,chemohormon otherapy,radiotherapy and immunotherapy,with or without surgery,wereused with variable efficacy. The prognosis is poor;themean survival after surgery is less than 15 mo.
