due to recent improvements in forensic dNA testing kit sensitivity,there has been an increased demand in the criminal justice community to revisit past convictions or cold *** of these cases have little biological evidence other than touch dNA in the form of archived latent fingerprint lift *** this study,a previously developed optimised workflow for this sample type was tested on aged fingerprints to determine if improved short tandem repeat(STR)profiles could be ***-year-old samples processed with the optimised workflow produced an average of approximately five more STR alleles per profile over the traditional *** optimised workflow also produced detectable alleles in samples aged out to 28 *** the methods tested,the optimised workflow resulted in the most informative profiles from evidence samples more representative of the forensic *** workflow is recommended for use with archived latent fingerprint samples,regardless of the archival time.

BACKGROUNd Glomerulopathy with fibrillary deposits is not uncommon in routine nephropathology practice,with amyloidosis and fibrillary glomerulonephritis being the two most frequently encountered *** amyloid heavy and light chain(AHL)is relatively uncommon and its biopsy diagnosis is usually limited to cases that show strong equivalent staining for a single immunoglobulin(Ig)heavy chain and a single light chain,further supported by mass spectrometry(MS)and serum studies for monoclonal *** polyclonal light chain staining can pose a *** SUMMARY Herein we present a challenging case of renal AHL with polyclonal and polytypic Ig gamma(IgG)staining pattern by *** patient is a 62-yearold Caucasian male who presented to an outside institution with a serum creatinine of up to 8.1 mg/dL and nephrotic range *** the finding of a polyclonal and polytypic staining pattern on immunofluorescence,ultrastructural study of the renal biopsy demonstrated the presence of fibrils with a mean diameter of 10 *** red was positive while dNAJB9 was *** suggested a diagnosis of amyloid AHL type with IgG and lambda,but kappa light chains were also present supporting the immunofluorescence staining *** immunofixation studies demonstrated IgG lambda monoclonal *** patient was started on *** chronic renal injury however was quite advanced and he ended up needing dialysis shortly *** Tissue diagnosis of AHL amyloid can be *** confirmation using other available diagnostic techniques is recommended in such cases.

Background: Pediatric casualties account for a notable proportion of encounters in the deployed setting based on the humanitarian medical care mission. Previously published data demonstrates that an age-adjust shock index may be a useful tool in predicting massive transfusion and death in children. We seek to determine if those previous findings are applicable to the deployed, combat trauma ***: We queried the department of defense Trauma Registry(dOdTR) for all pediatric subjects admitted to US and Coalition fixed-facility hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan from January 2007 to January 2016. This was a secondary analysis of casualties seeking to validate previously published data using the shock index, pediatric age adjusted. We then used previously published thresholds to determine patients outcome for validation by age grouping, 1–3 years(1.2), 4–6 years(1.2), 7–12 years(1.0), 13–17 years(0.9).Results: From January 2007 through January 2016 there were 3439 pediatric casualties of which 3145 had a documented heart rate and systolic pressure. Of those 502(16.0%) underwent massive transfusion and 226(7.2%) died prior to hospital discharge. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) thresholds were inconsistent across age groups ranging from 1.0 to 1.9 with generally limited area under the curve(AUC) values for both massive transfusion and death prediction characteristics. Using the previously defined thresholds for validation, we reported sensitivity and specificity for the massive transfusion by age-group: 1–3(0.73, 0.35), 4–6(0.63, 0.60), 7–12(0.80, 0.57), 13–17(0.77, 0.62). For death, 1–3(0.75, 0.34), 4–6(0.66–0.59), 7–12(0.64, 0.52), 13–17(0.70, 0.57). Reconfigurable products and manufacturing systems have enabled manufacturers to provide ＂cost effective＂ variety to the market. In spite of these new technologies, the expense of manufacturing makes it infeasible to supply all the possible variants to the market for some industries. Therefore, the determination of the right number of product variantsto offer in the product portfolios becomes an important consideration. The product portfolio planning problem had been independently well studied from marketing and engineering perspectives. However, advantages can be gained from using a concurrent marketing and engineering approach. Concurrent product development strategies specifically for reconfigurable products and manufacturing systems can allow manufacturers to select best product portfolios from marketing, product design and manufacturing perspectives. A methodology for the concurrent design of a product portfolio and assembly system is presented. The objective of the concurrent product portfolio planning and assembly system design problem is to obtain the product variants that will make up the product portfolio such that oversupply of optional modules is minimized and the assembly line efficiency is maximized. Explicit design of the assembly system is obtained during the solution of the problem. It is assumed that the demand for optional modules and the assembly times for these modules are known a priori. A genetic algorithm is used in the solution of the problem. The basic premise of this methodology is that the selected product portfolio has a significant impact on the solution of the assembly line balancing problem. An example is used to validate this hypothesis. The example is then further developed to demonstrate how the methodology can be used to obtain the optimal product portfolio. This approach is intended for use by manufacturers during the early design stages of product family design.

Inactivation, reactivation and regrowth of indigenous bacteria in reclaimed water after chlorine disinfection of a municipal wastewater treatment plant

disinfection of reclaimed water prior to reuse is important to prevent the transmission of pathogens. Chlorine is a widely utilized disinfectant and as such is a leading contender for disinfection of reclaimed water. To understand the risks of chlorination resulting from the potential selection of pathogenic bacteria, the inactivation, reactivation and regrowth rates of indigenous bacteria were investigated in reclaimed water after chlorine disinfection. Inactivation of total coliforms, Enterococcus and Salmonella showed linear correlations, with constants of 0.1384, 0.1624 and 0.057 L/（mg·min） and R 2 of 0.7617, 0.8316 and 0.845, respectively. However, inactivation of total viable cells by measurement of metabolic activity typically showed a linear correlation at lower chlorine dose （0-22 （mg·min）/L）, and a trailing region with chlorine dose increasing from 22 to 69 （mg·min）/L. Reactivation and regrowth of bacteria were most likely to occur after exposure to lower chlorine doses, and extents of reactivation decreased gradually with increasing chlorine dose. In contrast to total coliforms and Enterococcus, Salmonella had a high level of regrowth and reactivation, and still had 2% regrowth even after chlorination of 69 （mg·min）/L and 24 hr storage. The bacterial compositions were also significantly altered by chlorination and storage of reclaimed water, and the ratio of Salmonella was significantly increased from 0.001% to 0.045% after chlorination of 69 （mg·min）/L and 24 hr storage. These trends indicated that chlorination contributes to the selection of chlorine-resistant pathogenic bacteria, and regrowth of pathogenic bacteria after chlorination in reclaimed water with a long retention time could threaten public health security during wastewater reuse.
