Comparison of the inhibitory effect of different doses of subconjunctival bevacizumab application in an experimental model of corneal neovascularization

AIm： To evaluate the inhibitory effect of subconjunctival bevacizumab as single-and multiple-dose application, and compare their effects on corneal neovascularization in a rat model. mETHODS： Thirty adult Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this experimental study. The central cornea of the rats was cauterized chemically. The rats were randomly enrolled into three groups. All groups received subconjunctival injections. In Group 1（control group, n=10）, 0.05 m L 0.9% Na Cl solution was injected on the first day. In Group 2（single-dose group, n=10）, 0.05 m L bevacizumab（1.25 mg） was injected on the first day. In Group 3（multiple-dose group, n=10）, four doses of 0.05 m L bevacizumab（1.25 mg） were injected on the first, third, fifth and seventh day. Slit-lamp examination of all rats was performed at the third and ninth day. Digital images of the corneas were taken and analyzed using image analysis software to calculate corneal neovascularization area. All rats were sacrificed on the tenth day. In corneal sections, the number of blood vessels, state of inflammation and collagen formation was evaluated histopathologically. RESULTS： In Group 3, corneal edema grades were significantly lower than Group 1 and Group 2（P=0.02, and P=0.035, respectively）. The mean percentage of neovascularized corneal area in Group 3 was significantly lower than Group 2（P=0.005）. On histopathological examination, Group 2 and Group 3 showed significantly less number of blood vessels than Group 1（P=0.005, and P=0.001, respectively）. Additionally, Group 3 showed significantly less number of blood vessels compared to Group 2（P=0.019）. Inflammation and edema grades were significantly lower in Group 3 compared to Group 1（P=0.001）. CONCLUSION： Subconjunctival bevacizumab injection is effective in inhibition of newly formed corneal neovascularization. The multiple-dose bevacizumab treatment seems to be more effective compared to single-dose treatment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in rain and street runoff in Amman, Jordan

Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) were determined in the rain and street runoff samples from two sites in the vicinity of Amman City during the pluvial period 1999—2000. The results showed that elevated levels of PAHs were detected in the city center(site 1) than the residential area(site 2) and that the levels were higher in street runoff than rain samples of the same sites. The highest concentration of PAHs in both street runoff and rain samples were observed in the first rainy month(November 1999) which indicated a wash out effect of PAHs originating from vehicular emission accumulated during the long dry summer season before sampling. Within the investigated cold winter seasons, fluctuations in PAHs concentration were observed. The variation was attributed to the fossil combustion for heating purposes and to intervals between rainfalls: as the longer the intervals between rains were, the higher the PAH concentration were. Removal of PAHs from the atmosphere through precipitation over the investigated period varied with time and places depending on the amount of rainfall where higher rainfall removed higher amount of PAHs from the atmosphere. The amount of PAHs washed out through precipitation was estimated to be around 14.8 mg/m 2 and 21.1 mg/m 2 for sites 1 and 2 respectively.

Effect of seed mass on emergence and seedling development in Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.

We investigated the effect of seed mass on emergence, seedling survival and growth ofPterocarpus marsupium Roxb., a medium to large, commercially valuable and deciduous tree species. Among the three size classes viz. small （10-12 mm）, medium （13-15 mm） and large （16-17 mm）, the maximum proportion, of seed by number （54.12%） and dry weight （51.87%） was recorded, in the medium size seed class. Seed length and seed width were greatest in the large seed class （16.50 mm, 7.33 mm） followed by medium （13.50 mm, 5.60 mm） and small （11.37 ram, 3.66 mm）. Similarly, hundred seed weight （100 sw） varied from a maximum of 12.92 g in the large seed class to intermediate 10.95 g in the medium seed class and minimum of 7.02 g in the small seed class. The large seed size showed maximum emergence and shoot length over the medium and small seed class. After six months of growth, significant variations due to seed size were also observed for the growth and dry weight of P. marsupium seedlings. Seedling vigour, expressed in terms of height, collar diameter, number of leaves and dry biomass, was sig- nificantly affected by seed class. Seedlings that emerged from large seeds showed better growth and produced heavier seedlings as compared to medium and small seeds.

Volumetric,Viscometric and Refractive Index Behaviors of α-Amino Acids in Aqueous Caffeine Solution at Varying Temperatures

measurements of density(ρ), viscosity(η), and refractive index(n), were carried out on α-amino acids, DL-alanine (Ala), D-phenylalanine (Phe), and DL-threonine (Thr) (0.01-0.05 mol·L-1), in 0.05 mol·L-1 aqueous caffeine solution at 298.15, 303.15, 308.15, and 313.15 K. These measurements have been carried out to evaluate some important parameters, viz., apparent molar volume (фυ), partial molar volume (фυ0v), transfer volume (фυ0v(tr)), viscosity A and B coefficients of Jones-Dole equation, free energies of activation per mole of solvent (Δμ0#1) and solute (Δμ0#2), enthalpies (ΔH) and entropies (ΔS) of activation of viscous flow, variation of B with temperature (αB/αT)P, and molar refractive index (RD). These parameters have been interpreted in terms of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions and structure making/breaking ability of solutes in the given solution.

In the field of sentiment analysis,extracting aspects or opinion targets fromuser reviews about a product is a key *** the polarity of an opinion is much more useful if we also know the targeted Aspect or *** based approaches,like dependency-based rules,are quite popular and effective for this ***,they are heavily dependent on the authenticity of the employed parts-of-speech(POS)tagger and dependency *** popular rule based approach is to use sequential rules,wherein the rules formulated by learning from the user’s ***,in general,the sequential rule-based approaches have poor generalization ***,existing approaches mostly consider an aspect as a noun or noun phrase,so these approaches are unable to extract verb *** this article,we have proposed a multi-layered rule-based(mL-RB)technique using the syntactic dependency parser based rules along with some selective sequential rules in separate layers to extract noun ***,after rigorous analysis,we have also constructed rules for the extraction of verb *** verb rules primarily based on the association between verb and opinion *** proposed multi-layer technique compensates for the weaknesses of individual layers and yields improved results on two publicly available customer review *** F1 score for both the datasets are 0.90 and 0.88,respectively,which are better than existing *** improved results can be attributed to the application of sequential/syntactic rules in a layered manner as well as the capability to extract both noun and verb aspects.

Floristic composition and ecological gradient analyses of the Liakot Forests in the Kalam region of District Swat,Pakistan

Kalam Kohistan is a dry,temperate hilly region in the Hindu Raj Series of the Greater Hindu Kush mountains with diverse *** plant distribution and composition is expression of a range of various environmental variables,ecological and floristic attributes of vegetation in the Laikot Forests were therefore evaluated via consecutive explorative *** forests have not been evaluated ecologically before due to harsh climatic conditions and issues of accessibility and the study in hand is one of the first in its *** ecological techniques were used to sample forest vegetation and identify species in quadrats of 2 m×2 m for herbs,5 m×5 m for shrubs and 10 m×10 m for *** the data of 195 plant species and environmental factors were analyzed via Two-way Cluster Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis using PCORD and CANOCO *** 195 plant species from 63 families were 27 species of Asteraceae,the most-speciose family,followed by Poaceae(20 spp.).The dominant life form was therophyte(86 spp.;44%share),followed by phanerophyte(41 spp.;21%share).For the leaf size spectrum,most prevalent was nanophyll(73 spp.;44%)followed by microphyll(66 spp.,34%)and mesophyll(44 spp.;23%).Calcium carbonate,pH,potassium,sand,silt,organic matter,slope aspect and grazing significantly influenced species composition,distribution and *** floristic variation in the region was diverse due to elevational and aspect gradients and thus devided into three *** vegetation zonation can be utilized for forest management,species and habitat *** in situ and ex situ conservation of threatened plant species may improve their conservation status in future if address properly.

Assessment of Nanoparticle-Enriched Solvents for Oil Recovery Enhancement

Solvents are generally used to reduce the viscosity of heavy crude oil and ultimately enhance oil ***,a new method has been introduced where nanoparticles(NPs)are exploited to induce enhanced oil recovery owing to their ability to improve the mobility ratio,dampen the interfacial tension,and alter rock *** study investigated the integration of nano-alumina(Al_(2)O_(3))NPs with an n-hexane *** parti-cular,a Brookfield viscometer has been used to measure the crude oil viscosity and it has been found that NPs can effectively lead to a significant decrease in the overall oil viscosity(70 cp using the solvent only,45 cp when NPs are added).

Slope stability analysis of Balia Nala landslide, Kumaun Lesser Himalaya, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India

Balia Nala is the outlet of the Nainital lake, flowing towards southeast direction. Presence of Nainital habitation at its right bank has high socio-economic importance. This study presents the stability analysis of a ravine/valley along Balia Nala. Variegated slates(lower Krol and upper Blaini formations) are the main rock types, wherever the outcrop does exist and rest of the area is covered by slope wash and river borne materials. Three sets of joints are presented in the area, but 4 sets of joints also exist at some locations. Nainital lake fault intersected by manora fault from southwest direction passes through eastern side of the study area, and some small faults, which are sub-branches of Nainital lake fault, are observed(with 10 m offset) and promote the landslide in the area. This study shows that different kinds of discontinuities(joints, faults and shear zones) and rapid down cutting by the stream due to neotectonic activity affect the stability of the slope. The fragile lithology and deep V-shaped valley further accelerate the mass movement in the study area. In addition, rock mass rating(RmR), factor of safety(FOS) and graphical analysis of the joints indicate the study area as landslide-prone zone. This study will be helpful in not only reducing the risk on life of people, but also in assisting the ongoing civil work in the study area.

Rare earth-doped spinel nano ferrites are attaining importance as heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the degradation of organic *** earth metal doping increases the electrical and optical properties,as well as the surface-to-volume ratio of the bare *** this work,NiFe_(2)O_(4)(NF) and Nd-NiFe_(2)O_(4)(NF-1) were successfully synthesized via the co-precipitation *** nanotubes(CNT)-based nanocomposite(NF-2) was prepared using the ultra-sonication *** prepared materials were analyzed via various physiochemical *** degradation efficiency of these materials was analyzed for the degradation of Rhodamine B,methylene blue,and benzoic acid,NF-2 shows the highest efficiency among all the prepared ***-2 shows 83.87%,90.80%,and 66.96% degradation of Rhodamine B,methylene blue,and benzoic acid,*** reason for the superior activity of NF-2 is the existence of rare earth Nd ions and *** surface area of NF increases due to the presence of carbon nanotubes and enhanced surface area provides more active sites for the degradation reaction.
