Association between vitamin D and hepatitis C virus infection: A meta-analysis

AIM:To evaluate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]and sustained virological response(SVR)in hepatitis C virus(HCV)infected ***:Relevant studies were identified by systematically searching MEDLINE databases up to March2012 and abstracts of the European and American Congress of Hepatology conducted in *** must provide information on SVR and the levels of 25(OH)D3and/or 25(OH)D2[henceforth referred to as 25(OH)D]in sera samples from HCV infected *** inclusion criteria were:clinical studies that included HCV infected patients aged older than 18 years regardless of HCV genotype or ethnic group;provided information on SVR rates;and were reported in the English languageas full *** to the heterogeneity of studies in categorizing serum vitamin D levels,a cut-off value of30 ng/mL of serum 25(OH)D was *** was assessed using *** summary odds ratios with their corresponding 95%CI were calculated based on a random-effects ***:Overall,11 studies(8 observational and 3interventional)involving 1575 individuals were included and 1117 HCV infected individuals(71%)showed low vitamin D *** of the studies included monoinfected HCV individuals with the mean age ranging from 38 to 56 *** studies were conducted in human immunodeficiency virus/HCV infected *** vitamin D measurement,most of the studies employed radioimmunoassays(n=5)followed by chemiluminescence(n=4)and just one study employed high performance/pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC).Basal vitamin D levels varied from 17 to43 ng/mL in the studies selected,and most of the HCV infected individuals had genotype 1(1068/1575)with mean viral load varying from log 4.5-5.9 UI/*** regard to HCV treatment,most of the studies(n=8)included HCV individuals without previous treatment,where the pooled SVR rate was 46.4%.High rates of SVR were observed in HCV individuals with vitamin D levels above 30 ng/mL(OR=1

Development of automatic counting system for urediospores of wheat stripe rust based on image processing

To realize automatic counting of urediospores of Puccinia striiformis ***(Pst)(causal agent of wheat stripe rust),an automatic counting system for urediospores of wheat stripe rust pathogen based on image processing was developed using MATLAB GUIDE platform in combination with Local C Compiler(LCC).The system is independent of the MATLAB environment and can be run on a computer without the MATLAB *** this system,automatic counting of Pst urediospores in a microscopic image can be implemented via image processing technologies including image scaling,clustering segmentation,morphological modification,watershed transformation,connected region labeling,*** design of the automatic counting system,the key algorithms used in the system and realization of the main functions of the system were described in *** counting tests were conducted using microscopic digital images of Pst urediospores and the high accuracies more than 95%were *** results indicated that it is feasible to count Pst urediospores automatically using the developed system based on image processing.

Study of reverse osmosis membranes fouling by inorganic salts and colloidal particles during seawater desalination

Fouling phenomenon is considered among the major reasons that cause significant increase of operating cost of desalination plants equipped with reverse osmosis(RO)*** phenomenon is studied in the present work in the case of RO polyamide aromatic membranes using model seawater containing inorganic salts and colloidal *** solubility conditions of CaCO3 and CaSO4 were applied to study RO performances with and without colloid *** experiments,the membrane permeate fluxes were continuously ***,studies of chemical composition,structure,and morphology of the materials deposited on the membrane surface were conducted using energy dispersive microanalysis(EDS)X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy(SEM).Results show that in conditions of calcium carbonate oversaturation there is a reduction in the permeate flow of 11.2%due to fouling of the membrane by the precipitation of this *** in the same conditions of calcium sulphate oversaturation the reduction of the flow is 5%,so we can conclude that in conditions of oversaturation of both salts,calcium carbonate produces a greater fouling of the membrane that in its view causes greater decrease in the flow of *** this based on the results of the test with both salts in oversaturated *** in the formation of calcite and gypsum crystals onto the membranes as XRD analyses *** presence of colloidal silica in those conditions intensifies strongly the fouling,leading until to 24.1%of permeate flux decrease.

Development of a vehicle-track interaction model to predict the vibratory benefits of rail grinding in the time domain

Imperfections in the wheel-rail contact are one of the main sources of generation of railway vibrations. Consequently, it is essential to take expensive corrective maintenance measures, the results of which may be unknown. In order to assess the effectiveness of these measures, this paper develops a vehicle-track interaction model in the time domain of a curved track with presence of rail corrugation on the inner rail. To characterize the behavior of the track, a numerical finite element model is developed using ANSYS software, while the behavior of the vehicle is characterized by a unidirectional model of two masses developed with VAMPIRE PRO software. The overloads obtained with the dynamic model are applied to the numerical model and then, the vibrational response of the track is obtained. Results are validated with real data and used to assess the effectiveness of rail grinding in the reduction of wheel-rail forces and the vibration generation phenomenon.
