Background: Colles’ fracture is a type of fracture of the distal third of the radius and its most common cause is falling from patient’s own height and, epidemiologically, it is more common in the elderly. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to analyze the epidemiology of Colles’ fracture retrospectively, in patients admitted to Fernandes Távora Hospital. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study conducted at the Fernandes Távora Hospital used 1030 radiographic images of patients with wrist fractures. Results: (After a careful analysis) It was found that this type of fracture occurred with a greater frequency in age groups of 50 to 69, 60 to 69, and 40 to 49 years old, which corresponds to 59.5% of patients and the most affected sex were females (51.1%). Conclusion: The study concluded that this type of bone injury is more common in people aged 40 to 69 years old, especially in women, because of their geometry and bone composition. It is evident that Colles’ fracture impacts the life of the affected person, therefore, an adequate diagnosis and treatment having utmost importance.

This study estimates the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of coffee production in the agroforestry system in the settlements of farmers located in the West of the state of Silo Paulo, Brazil, in the region known as Pontal of Paranapanema, aiming at the development of programs to support the growth of production sustainable coffee and programs to protect the coffee activity before the possible global climate change. The settlements are located in areas with sandy soils and highly degraded by human action Moreover, the region is considered marginal for the production of coffee, because it is subject to periods of high temperatures, prolonged drought and frost risk, which hinders the sustainability of farms. The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of agroforestry are analyzed through Ambitec-agro system, consisting of a set of indicators aimed at ex-post evaluation of the contribution of technological innovation to environmental, social and economic development of an agricultural activity. The system Ambitec involves：（1） general data collection about the technology; （2） application of questionnaires with adopters selected and insertion of data on impact indicators spreadsheets via platform MS-Excel and to obtain quantitative results and impacts partial indexes and aggregates the impact of technology selected; （3） analysis and interpretation of indices obtained, which vary between -15 and 15. The results indicate that agroforestry management can contribute to：（1） maintaining or increasing the sustainability of traditional coffee-growing regions in the case of sudden climate change; （2） the expansion of the coffee regions now considered unsuitable for the cultivation of coffee; （3） for sustainable regional development.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a prevalent condition with a significant impact on the personal, social, professional and marital life of women. It is a complex condition that may have no specific causal diagnosis or may be associated with multiple diagnoses, frequently involving treatment failure. The definition of health care strategies fundamentally depends on the way women live with this condition. Thus, the objective of the present study is to learn how women with CPP experience their diagnosis and the meaning they attribute to it. A qualitative study was conducted by interviewing a focus group of 11 women. The content of the interviews was recorded and fully transcribed, and the speeches were interpreted by Bardin’s content analysis. The topics most frequently dealt with in the interview were diagnosis, beginning of pain, worsening and improving factors, marital and interpersonal relationships, interference with daily activities, association with emotional aspects, and perspectives for the future. It could be perceived how much these women need to be better heard and how much the association between psychic and physical questions must be visualized by the professionals who provide care for them. The approach used by professionals from different areas, when properly structured, can minimize the problem of the division of a sick person into separate parts. Psychological care is very important, especially in relation to the discovery of more effective strategies for living with pain.

The Use of Solid State NMR to Evaluate the Carbohydrates in Commercial Coffee Granules

Coffee brings many health benefits due to its chemical constituents. Based on this information, it is essential to know the main chemical compounds from coffee granules;the intermolecular interaction among the coffees compounds and the molecular components homogeneity. In this study six types of roasted commercial coffee were evaluated by solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), employing carbon-13 (13C) and hydrogen (1H) nucleus. Carbon-13 was analyzed applying high field NMR techniques, such as: magic angle spinning (MAS);magic angle spinning with cross-polariza- tion (CPMAS) and magic angle spinning with cross-polarization and dipolar dephasing (CPMASDD). The hydrogen was evaluated via relaxation times. Proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame was deter-mined through the carbon-13 decay, during the variable contact-time experiment, using high field NMR. Proton spin-lattice relaxation time was determined through the inversion-recovery pulse sequence, using low field NMR. Considering all NMR results, it was concluded that the major coffee compounds are: a) triacilglycerides, which constitute the mobile region in the granule coffee and b) Carbohydrates such as: polysaccharides and fibers that belong to the rigid domain. These constituents belong to different molecular mobility domain, although they have strong intermolecular interactions due to the granule organization.

The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and depression in women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP). A case-control study was conducted on 66 women, 36 of them with CPP and 30 without this diagnosis. Depression was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and sexual dysfunction was evaluated using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Data were analyzed statistically by the Mann-Whitney test, Fisher exact test, chisquare test, and Spearman correlation test. Regarding sociodemographic data, no significant differences were detected between populations with respect to the variables studied (age, schooling, number of children, income, salary, and marital status), indicating group homogeneity and thus increasing the reliability of the data. A cut-off of 26.55 points was used to calculate the total score for sexual function. In the group of women with CPP, 94.4% were at high risk for sexual dysfunction. Comparison of FSFI scores showed that the domains of sexual function, such as orgasm, lubrication and pain differed significantly between women with and without CPPP. Correlations were detected between the following items: orgasm × age (r = -0.01904), orgasm × number of children (r =-0. 00947), orgasm × body mass index (BMI) (r =-0.00 955), relationship × age (r = 0.03952), income × relationship (r =-0.014680), relationship × number of children (r =-0.03623), depression × relationship (r =-0.16091), desire × age (r = -0.45255), desire × number of children (r = -0.01824), lubrication × excitement (r = 0.04198), and lubrication × BMI (r = -0.01608). The prevalence of depression detected in the present study was 38.9% among women with pain and 3.3% among control women. It was observed that women with CPP suffer a negative interference regarding sexual function compared to controls. Thus, it can be seen that a specific approach related to sexuality is extremely important within the context of women with CPP. Depression

Soybean inoculation with elite strains of Bradyrhizobium to improve nodulation, N2 fixation, and grain yield is well established worldwide. However, when grown in soils where N is deficient, soybean undergoes an initial phase of N starvation that may last up to 20 days after seedling germination due to the lack of synchronism between the phase when seed N reserves are exhausted and the moment when plants begin to benefit from the nitrogen fixed by the bacteria. Practices that promote early nodulation may play a key role in reducing the N starvation period. Azospirillum is a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that can stimulate root hair formation and root growth, creating more sites for early root infection and nodule formation by N2-fixing Bradyrhizobium spp. In this study, the effects of co-inoculating soybeans with Bradyrhizobium spp. and Azospirillum brasilense on nodulation precocity and N2 fixation were evaluated under greenhouse and field conditions. Nodule number and dry weight, as well as plant and root dry weight and N accumulated in shoots at 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30 days after emergence (DAE) were evaluated in response to inoculation with Bradyrhizobium spp. alone or when co-inoculated with Azospirillum sp. In the greenhouse, co-inoculated plants nodulated precociously as indicated by a significant increase (p Azospirillum helps plants to overcome environmental stresses.

The Evaluation of Polyethylene/Clay Composite from Solid State NMR

Polymeric nanocomposites based on polyethylene (PE) and Brazilian natural montmorillonite clay (MN) were obtained by melt processing, using a twin-screw extruder. The main objective of this work is focusing on the characterization of composites materials by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The solid-state NMR measurements were used to observe both polymer matrix (through carbon-13 and hydrogen nuclei) and the clay (silicon-29 and aluminum-27). The polymer matrix analyses were carried out applying solid state techniques, such as: cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS), variable contact time (VCT) and by the proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame parameter (T1ρH), detected from the resolved carbon-13 decay of the VCT experiment and through the determination of spin-lattice relaxation time, T1H (using low field NMR). The clay was analyzed by 29Si and 27Al, employing MAS NMR technique. From those techniques we can have principally response on clay dispersion in the polyethylene matrix, as well as the interactions between both components in the nanostructured material. The T1H response was an important result which showed, that the materials formed, presented different molecular domains (according to the domain size that varied from 25 to 50 nm, measured by relaxation), considering the clay dispersion mode in terms of intercalation and/or exfoliation in the polymer matrix.

Studies of calcium transfer across the placenta have been reviewed because of the physiological and nutritional importance of this mineral during pregnancy, especially in order to better understand its contribution to development of the fetal skeleton. The placental transfer of maternal calcium to the fetus represents a vital mechanism for fetal development and breast-milk production, yet little meaningful information is currently available regarding the biochemical mechanisms involved in this process. Once again, the use of different animal models as rodents, rabbit, sheep and bovine have demonstrate different mechanisms of calcium transport across the placenta and contribute to better understand its effects in both fetus and mother during the gestation. In relation to the transfer of calcium from the mother to fetus data suggest it occur via an active mechanism;thus calcium concentration is higher in fetus than in maternal blood. Despite conflicting reports, several investigators agreed that calcium concentration in the fetal blood is mainly regulated by fetal parathyroid hormone and plasma concentration of vitamin D3, a metabolite that plays a key role in calcium transport through the syncytial cells.
