Suicide among Physicians and Methodological Similarities of MEDLINE/PubMED and BVS/BIREME Open Access Bibliographic databases: A Systematic Review with Metanalysis

Background: Suicide among physicians is a serious public health issue, with an extremely complex and multifactorial behavior. Aim: The aim of this study was to use the theme “Suicide among Physicians” to exemplify the analysis of methodological similarities between the scientific content available at MEDLINE and BVS databases, as scientific research tools. Methods: This is a systematic review with metanalysis. The following combinations of keywords were used for data search in the referred databases: “suicide” AND “physicians” AND “public heath”. Results: Three hundred and thirteen publications were identified, but only 16 studies were chosen. Great association was found between MEDLINE and BVS databases and the Odds Ratio regarding the theme: “Suicide among physicians”. Conclusions: Considering the similarities found in the utilization of the two analyzed databases, it was possible to identify that suicide among physicians is associated with the exercise of an important professional role in the society and in the workplace. With regard to scientific information, the p-value-obtained value (databases. Thus, these open-access research tools are considered scientific reliable tools.

Use of Perovskite-Type Lanthanum Nickelate Synthesized by the Polymeric Precursor Method in the Steam Reforming Reaction of Methane

In the current work, LaNiO3 perovskite was synthesized using the polymeric precursor method. The materials were thermally treated at 300°C for 2 hours, subsequently supported on alumina or zirconia and finally calcined at 800°C for 4 hours. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, BET surface area and thermo-programmed reduction. Steam reforming reactions were carried out at 750°C and 6 bar during 4 hours using a pilot reactor under a H2O:CH4 ratio of 2.5. The mass of catalysts was about 5.7 g. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of the perovskite structure in all samples prepared. The results also showed that lanthanum nickelate was more efficient when supported on alumina than zirconia. Finally, it was observed that the methane conversion was approximately 94% and the selectivity to hydrogen was about 70%. In all cases low selectivity to CO and CO2 was verified.

Sintering effects on chemical and physical properties of bioactive ceramics

The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical and physical properties of bioactive ceramics prepared from an aqueous paste containing hydroxyapatite(HA)and beta tri-calcium phosphate(β-TCP).Prior to formulating the paste,HA andβ-TCP were calcined at 800℃and 975℃(11 h),milled,and blended into 15%/85%HA/β-TCP volume-mixed *** cylindrical rods were subsequently sintered to 900℃,1100℃or 1250℃.The sintered specimens were characterized by helium pycnometry,X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform-infrared(FT-IR),and inductively coupled plasma(ICP)spectroscopy for evaluation of porosity,crystalline phase,functional-groups,and Ca:P ratio,*** properties were assessed via 3-point bending and diametral *** microstructural evaluation using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)showed larger pores and a broader pore size distribution(PSD)for materials sintered at 900℃and 1100℃,whereas the 1250℃samples showed more uniform *** quantification showed significantly higher porosity for materials sintered to 900℃and 1250℃(p<0.05).XRD indicated substantial deviations from the 15%/85%HA/β-TCP formulation following sintering where lower amounts of HA were observed when sintering temperature was *** testing demonstrated significant differences between calcination temperatures and different sintering regimes(p<0.05).Variation in chemical composition and mechanical properties of bioactive ceramics were direct consequences of calcination and sintering.

Oral spindle cell lipomas

Spindle cell lipoma is an histological type of lipoma which are rarely found in the oral cavity. We describe two cases of intraoral spindle cell lipomas. The pa- tients were men and presented painless slow growing masses in the left cheek and hard palate, measuring 50 × 30 mm and 23 × 20 mm respectively. Microsco- pically, both lesions presented a solid proliferation of mature fat cells intermixed with bundles of connec- tive tissue. Cells were immunopositive for S100 pro- tein and CD34 (one case), with low mitotic activity (Ki-67). The final diagnosis was spindle cell lipomas. The lesions were excised and no recurrence was no- ticed after six months. Oral spindle cell lipomas are unexpected to occur in the oral mucosa, and the main differential diagnosis is well-differentiated liposar- coma/atypical lipoma. Lesions are treated with sur-gical excision and recurrences are rare.

Antioxidants Enzymes Activities and NO Levels in Hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis—A Comparative Study

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individuals diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, followed up in the dialysis center of antonio Pedro University Hospital (HUAP) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), between 2015 and 2017. Fifteen healthy control (HC) subjects were included, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, B, and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, alcoholics and those exposed to X-rays in the last 3 months, were excluded. Objectives: As oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction may be linked to the higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: SOD and GPx and total NO levels in the plasma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dialysis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO levels was performed by fluorometric kit, while activities of SOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Results: We found higher plasma SOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml) and CAPD (10.14 U/ml), compared to C (3.73 U/ml) group, while GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol/h/ml) and CAPD (122.76 nmol/h/ml) groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol/h/ml). Total serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol/μl) and CAPD (10.26 pmol/μl), compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol/μl). Conclusion: Decreased total serum NO and GPx activities may lead to endothelial dysfunction and consequently a higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients.

Pyrolysis Oil from the Fruit and Cake of Jatropha curcas Produced Using a Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) Process: Analysis of a Pyrolysis Oil-Diesel Blend

Background: The LTC process is a technique that consists of heating solid residues at a temperature of 380oC - 420oC in an inert atmosphere and their products are evaluated individually: these products include pyrolysis oil, pyrolytic char, gas and water. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the use of oils obtained by pyrolysis of Jatropha curcas as an additive for diesel in different proportions. Results: A Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) process carried out on samples of Jatropha curcas fruit and generated pyrolysis oil, pyrolyic char, gas and aqueous fractions in relative amounts of 23, 37, 16 and 14% [w/w] respectively for Jatropha curcas fruit and 19, 47, 12 and 22% [w/w] respectively for Jatropha curcas cake. The oil fractions were analyzed by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, GCMS and physicochemical analysis. The pyrolysis oil was added to final concentrations of 2, 5, 10 and 20% [w/w] to commercial diesel fuel. The density, viscosity, sulfur content and flash point of the mixtures were determined. Conclusions: The results indicated that the addition of the pyrolysis oil maintained the mixtures within the standards of the diesel directive, National Petroleum Agency (ANP no 15, of 19. 7. 2006), with the exception of the viscosity of the mixtures containing 20% pyrolysis oil.

Technology and Inequity in Health： The Geographical Distribution of Glucometers for the Control of Diabetes

Technological innovation plays an important role in the dynamics of economic growth and in promoting the welfare of the general population. In support of this hypothesis, an empirical study was carried out to assess the spatial distribution of insulin and supplies （glucometers） for the control of diabetes in patients registered in the Public Healthcare System in Salvador, Bahia, from 1998 to 2012. In order to achieve this objective, we applied a combination of data collection strategies, including spatial analysis and discrete choice model estimation. The study proposed to answer the following question： What factors affect access to the supplies required to control diabetes in insulin-dependent patients？ To this end, we assessed the spatial distribution of diabetic patients in Salvador who had received glucometers. The hypothesis asserted that social, economic and geographical factors determine access to the supplies （glucometers） used to control diabetes. Exploratory Spatial data Analysis （ESda） was therefore performed using the Global Spatial Autocorrelation Index in order to analyze the spatial distribution of glucometers. We then performed econometric estimations and analyzed the results. The final results initially demonstrated that there were major inconsistencies in the distribution of glucometers; i.e. purely random factors largely determined the probability of obtaining this device. Individual characteristics were not decisive factors in the probability of obtaining a glucometer, which were insteadrelated to type of diabetes and recommended treatment.

Gait, posture and transfer assessment among elderly practitioners and non-practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan

Falls may be devastating events among elderly people. Tai Chi Chuan is a type of moderate sports exercise that demonstrates improvements in balance, gait and posture. The aim here was to assess the influence of this method on the balance, gait and posture of healthy active elderly people. A controlled cross-sectional study was conducted on 76 volunteers, divided into two groups: 51 volunteers Tai Chi Chuan group mean age 76.8 years and 25 volunteers control group mean age 70.3 years. Both groups underwent the Modified Clinical Test on Sensory Interaction for Balance (mCTSIB), Walking Test (WT), Sit-to-Stand Transfer Test (SSTT) and Unipedal Assessment Test (UT), using the Neurocom Balance Master system. Result: In conditions Static balance tests: the mCTSIB-Tai-Chi Group had a lower sway velocity (°/s) on a firm surface with eyes open and medio-lateral direction, Foam Surface with eyes open medio-lateral and anteroposterior direction. Unilateral Stance Tai-Chi Group had a lower mean sway velocity (°/s) with open eyes (right and left), but with eyes closed. The Control Group showed a lower sway velocity. Under Dynamic Balance: Walk Across Test Tai-Chi Group presented a walking speed greater than the Control Group. In Sit to Stand Transfer Test, Tai-Chi Group showed a better index rising to lift up and lower oscillation in the final standing position. Conclusion: The Tai Chi Group was shown to be a protection factor for preserving and maintaining the static and dynamic positions of posture and gait.

Abiotic and Biotic Stresses and Changes in the Lignin Content and Composition in Plants

Lignin is a polymer of phenylpropanoid compounds formed through a complex biosynthesis route, represented by a metabolic grid for which most of the genes involved have been sequenced in several plants, mainly in the model-plants Arabidopsis thaliana and Populus. Plants are exposed to different stresses, which may change lignin content and composition. In many cases, particularly for plant-microbe interactions, this has been suggested as defence responses of plants to the stress. Thus, understanding how a stressor modulates expression of the genes related with lignin biosynthesis may allow us to develop study-models to increase our knowledge on the metabolic control of lignin deposition in the cell wall. This review focuses on recent literature reporting on the main types of abiotic and biotic stresses that alter the biosynthesis of lignin in plants.
