Performance of a Horizontal Flow Constructed Reed Bed Filter for Municipal Wastewater Treatment: The Case Study of the Prototype Installed at Gaston Berger University, Saint-Louis, Senegal

In Saint-Louis, Senegal, a constructed wetland with horizontal flow reed beds (FHa and FHb) has demonstrated significant efficacy in treating municipal wastewater. Analyzing various treatment stages, the system showed only a slight temperature variation, from an influent average of 26.3°C to an effluent of 24.7°C. Electrical conductivity decreased from 1331 mS/cm to 974.5 mS/cm post-primary treatment, with suspended solids (SS) dramatically reduced from 718.9 mg/L to 5.7 mg/L in the final effluent. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) saw a notable decrease, from initial levels of 655.6 mg/L and 1240 mg/L to 2.3 mg/L and 71.3 mg/L, respectively. Nitrogenous compounds (N-TN) and phosphates () also decreased significantly, indicating the system’s nutrient removal capacity. Microbiological analysis revealed a reduction in fecal coliforms from 7.5 Ulog/100ml to 1.8 Ulog/100ml and a complete elimination of helminth eggs. The presence of Phragmites and Typha was instrumental in enhancing these reductions. The system’s compliance with the Senegalese standards for disposal into natural environments, WHO recommendations for unrestricted water reuse in irrigation, and the European legislation for water reuse was established. The effluent quality met the stringent criteria for various classes of agricultural reuse, illustrating the system’s potential for sustainable water management. This wetland model presents a robust solution for water-stressed regions, ensuring environmental protection while supporting agricultural needs. The study calls for ongoing research to further refine the system for optimal, reliable wastewater treatment and water resource sustainability.

This paper evaluates the efficacy of two sequential vertical flow filters (VFF), FV1 and FV2, implanted with Typha, in a pilot-scale wastewater treatment system. FV1 comprises three cells (FV1a, FV1b, and FV1c), while FV2 consists of two cells (FV2a and FV2b), each designed to reduce various physicochemical and microbiological pollutants from wastewater. Quantitative analyses show significant reductions in electrical conductivity (from 1331 to 1061 μS/cm), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5 from 655.6 to 2.3 mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD from 1240 to 82.2 mg/L), total nitrogen (from 188 to 37.3 mg/L), and phosphates (from 70.9 to 14.6 mg/L). Notably, FV2 outperforms FV1, particularly in decreasing dissolved salts and BOD5 to remarkably low levels. Microbiological assessments reveal a substantial reduction in fecal coliforms, from an initial concentration of 7.5 log CFU/100mL to 3.7 log CFU/100mL, and a complete elimination of helminth eggs, achieving a 100% reduction rate in FV2. The study highlights the impact of design parameters, such as filter material, media depth, and plant species selection, on treatment outcomes. The findings suggest that the judicious choice of these components is critical for optimizing pollutant removal. For instance, different filtration materials show varying efficacies, with silex plus river gravel in FV1c achieving superior pollutant reduction rates. In conclusion, VFFs emerge as a promising solution for wastewater treatment, underscoring the importance of design optimization to enhance system efficiency. Continuous monitoring and adaptation of treatment practices are imperative to ensure water quality, allowing for safe environmental discharge or water reuse. The research advocates for ongoing improvements in wastewater treatment technologies, considering the environmental challenges of the current era. The study concludes with a call for further research to maximize the effectiveness of VFFs in water management.

用显微及亚显微方法研究了中华绒螯蟹雌体不同生理阶段 (幼蟹、未成熟蟹、成熟蟹、抱卵蟹和流产蟹 )腹肢的体壁结构变化和粘液腺发育特征。体壁的上皮细胞层常与粘液腺相连 ,粘液腺分泌物经导管穿过各层角膜排出。不同生理状况下中华绒螯蟹的腹肢体壁各角膜层结构的比例及致密度有明显的差异 ,粘液腺细胞及导管的数量不同 ,粘液腺与上皮细胞的连接程度也不同。粘液腺是否正常分泌、刚毛囊的开闭均与中华绒螯蟹的胚胎附着有关。比较研究发现 ,太湖抱卵蟹腹肢体腔内腺体比温州本地抱卵蟹腹肢内腺体发达 ,分泌的粘液也特别多。分析认为中华绒螯蟹腹肢组织结构。

Sedimentology of the Redang Island Coral Reefs Environment

A study on the sedimentology of the Redang Island coral reefs environment was conducted. Sediments were collected on board UNIPERTAMA VII during the pre and post monsoon seasons. Twenty and seven sediments samples were collected using a Smith McIntyre grab on board UNI PERTAMA VII and put in labelled plastic bags then brought back to the laboratory for analysis. The sediments were analyzed for their sedimentological characteristics （mean size, skewness, standard deviation and kurtosis） using dry sieving method. Results showed that the highest mean size value of the sediments during the pre and post monsoons seasons are 2.14 ~ and 2.37 O. respectively and the lowest are -0.40 q~ and -0.10 ~, respectively. Based on the results, sediments can be classified as medium sand （34%）, poorly sorted （67%）, strongly negative skewed （36%） and extremely leptokurtic （56%） during the pre monsoon season, while during the post monsoon season sediments can be classified as medium sand （38%）, poorly sorted （73%）, strongly negative skewed （41%） and very leptokurtic （62%）. Results revealed that the sediments in the whole study area are relatively coarse. No relationship was observed between mean size and other sedimentological characteristics （R2= 0.05 pre-monsoon. R2 =0.0017 post monsoon） with seasons.

Sex differences in cardiovascular control by nitric oxide in normotensive and hypertensive rats

R Nitric oxide probably plays an important role in mechanisms determining sexual dimorphism in the development of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. Because stress together with gender are significant cardiovascular risk factors, we studied the role nitric oxide in car-diovascular regulation in male and female nor-motensive and hypertensive rats under normal and stress conditions. Experiments were per-formed in mongrel normotensive and hyperten-sive (two kidney, one clip) rats of both sexes, weighing 200-250g. The study of mean arterial pressure and heart rate was carried out: 1) under control condition;2) during nitric oxide blo- ckade by NG-nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME, 10 mg/kg, iv) 3) during 60 min immobilization stress and recovery;4) during 60 min immobi-lization stress + L-NAME and recovery. We found that the severity of hypertension in fe-males was lower than in males. We also ob-served that both normotensive and hyperten-sive females demonstrated more favorable pat-tern of cardiovascular responses to stress. At rest, nitric oxide blockade increased the mean arterial pressure and decreased the heart rate more effectively in female normotensive and hypertensive rats than in male groups. During stress, nitric oxide blockade modified the stress- induced cardiovascular responses more sig-nificantly in female normotensive and hyper-tensive rats compared with male groups. Our data show that both normotensive and hyper-tensive females demonstrated the more effec-tive nitric oxide control of cardiovascular activ-ity under normal and especially stress condi-tions than male groups. This male-female dif-ference may be important mechanism respon-sible for greater in females vs. males of cardio-vascular resistance to stress and development of hypertension.

Obesity trends in Russia. The impact on health and healthcare costs

Similar to most developed countries, obesity rates inRussiahave been steadily increasing. This has led to a high burden of obesity related diseases and associated healthcare costs. The micro-simulation model has been utilized to project body mass index (BMI) and BMI related disease burden and healthcare costs. Incidence, mortality, survival and healthcare costs were collected for thirteen diseases. The results have been simulated for 3 hypothetical scenarios to project a potential impact of policy interventions: 1) assuming no reduction in BMI;2) 1% reduction in mean BMI across the population;3) 5% reduction in mean BMI across the population. Nearly 58% of the female population was obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) or overweight (BMI 25 -29.9 kg/m2) in 2010, and the prevalence is projected to decrease to 54% in 2050. The rates are predicted to increase for men from 51% in 2010 to 76% in 2050. The prevalence rates will triple for some obesity-related diseases. A one percent decrease in BMI across the population will save more than two billion US Dollars in 2030 and 2050. Despite female obesity prevalence starting at a higher point than the men, obesity is predicted to increase in males but not females. Disease and economic burden attributed to these obesity rates are still severe and the country should implement strong policies to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the sixth most common malignancy in women. Ovarian tumors consist of several clinical and pathological entities that share an anatomic site. The gold standard treatment, both in front-line and in adjuvant setting, is represented by carboplatin/paclitaxel combination. Conversely, the second-line treatment is not well defined. The response to platinum is the major prognostic factor for survival. In this review we discuss the current views on platinum-refractory/resistant patient treatment only, which includes patients progressing or relapsing within 6 months from the last platinum-based course. Concerning this subgroup, the activity of several conventional drugs was confirmed in different trials without a significant impact in terms of overall survival. In the last years particular emphasis was given to targeted anti-angiogenetic therapy which produced a survival improvement with an acceptable toxicity profile. New “ad hoc” approaches, with a major attention to outcome-predictive factors, are eagerly awaited.
